Toklas Cookbook, we made those in college. :-) >>The book was a rather good read, with some rather good recipes in it, IIRC. > > Did all of them contain "herb"? > No, not at all. The book is actually a memoir/chronicle of her life with Gertrude Stein, and not just a cookbook. It covers many of the literati and artists of the day, and others who populated their salon. Menus and recipes of meals served there are detailed. The famous or infamous recipe was actual "Haschich Fudge", a mixture of fruit, nuts, spices, and cannibus sativa. Many consider the book a great read. Several other books followed, but it is arguably considered the best of the lot. Stein herself published her own memoirs under the title "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. It's also a fascinating read. Toklas' book was published years later after Stein's death. There was a critically acclaimed play entitled "Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein". It was a one woman show, at least initially starring Pat Carroll, and I enjoyed seeing it at The Cleveland Playhouse. -- Wayne Boatwright ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Great restaurants are, of course, nothing but mouth ~brothels. The recipe sounds quite good and the lemon juice is a good idea. Both corn starch and flour work quite well and I have tried the various flavorings with enjoyment. I notice that the recipe does suggest Kirsch and I'd agree that it is not essential but how can you know you don't miss it until you try it? -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland Email, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |

Let's put it this way, I don't keep Kirsch on hand, haven't thought about buying an airplane bottle of it (if I ever had the chance) and wouldn't buy a big bottle of hooch just to use a tablespoon or so of it. ![]() -- I love cooking with wine. That's a valid point but there are other uses for Kirsch than fondue. It goes particularly well sprinkled on fresh fruits like peaches, strawberries and raspberries -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland Email, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |

When we went camping, they stocked up on Tab and Diet Shasta (my dad was diabetic). They would keep it in the camper and it would be nice and warm. When we got tired of warm water, we would occasionally drink some of the soda, but only in times of dire thirst. -- "I'm not crazy, just ask my toaster" - JT - Radio From Hell traffic girl http://www.wiblovia.com - The Wiblovian Institute of Kibology |

I got a few when I went to the local 'IMAX Theater and Science Center' where they had them for sale. Here's a website for ordering them online: http://www.spacefoodsticks.com/ Personally though....they were not as good as I remember them. They seemed to taste less good now that I'm an old fuddy duddy...Or they've changed the recipe (which they said they didn't!). Nico |
