Default Taking a little time off, I think

I finished an art review last night that had been hanging over my head
far too long and emailed it to my editor this morning. Getting it out
of my life felt good. A load off my back.

D flew back into DFW last night, her visit with friends in Boston
done. It was good to pick her up at the airport. It's even better
having her home.

I walked a field of wildflowers this morning looking for foraging bees
from the hive I set out at the garden. It took only a few moments to
count 16 of them working tiny white blossoms. Most likely scores more
were out there, of course. The hive is settling in, it appears.

After setting out an experimental (for me, anyway) 1/4-inch soaker
hose irrigation setup in my community garden patch and checking on the
bees, I dropped into the store to get some cheese for a lunchtime
grilled cheese sandwich, and found some treasures in the marked-down
bin: dried mushrooms (oysters, straw, and assorted), dried star fruit,
dried strawberries, dried tomatoes. All for a dollar each.

Back home, I started my grilled cheese (with New Orleans style olive
salad) and rummaged through my dollar treasures and checked rfc while
the cheese melted and the bread toasted and the olive salad nestled
into them both.

What a disappointment to read this group it was. So much vile abuse.
It's really bad today, folks. Really bad.

I'll be back later, I suppose.

modom,
Great news about the bees and the community garden. Sorry your leaving. I
hate to see someone put down the mouse that makes positive contributions.

One of the negative things about my schedule being so busy is I don't get to
participate in that many discussions here and when I do get back I cant
always find the threads I was involved in.

One of the positive things about just dropping in for a few minutes each day
is the people who's only measure of their self-worth is how badly they can
make someone else feel don't get to put me in too bad a mood.

So the point of life is to stay in a good "mood" and never to feel bad. Even
if one is doing the wrong thing.

I'm glad I'm not you.

When people do the wrong thing they *should* feel bad.

I'm not at that stage yet. But I've killfiled about everybody I can.
I've told myself that if I read stuff because somebody quoted them, I
just need to not reply. If that doesn't work, maybe I just need to stop
reading them when they are quoted. The last thing I need is to turn
into a nasty, bitter old man.

I've quit this group several times in the last fifteen years, but that
was because I had small children and a job. I'm retired, and my
children have moved out (although they come back about one day a week).

That should've taught you something, that you don't belong here...
especially since you contribute nothing worthwhile, all you've ever done
here is complain about everyone and post creepy inane comments. Of all the
wastes of protoplasm that passes through the rfc portals you are by far the
most worthless, Dan.

That works for me too.

I've been practicing retirement for about 20 years now. One of these days
I'll get it down pat and really get into it :-)

Vile? I wouldn't call it that, I frequent a few that would turn you
grey'er than you are. Perhaps rambunctious would be a better word, or
it may be that you've a thin skin....god this is Usenet not a church

My take Mike is to stick around.
Purely selfish self interest here -as we always enjoy
your informative posts and style of posting

Filters work well and also cut down the dross
Motzarella news via Thunderbird
Glad that your community garden project is going gang busters.

Anyway what ever you choose go with the wind in your back
and may all your troubles be little ones

I have to agree with Michael here. Reading this newsgroup at present *is*
a huge disappointment. We have always had a handful of posters who post
insulting and vile messages and target other posters, but the severity
comes and goes. It's particularly bad right now.

I come here to read and post about food, recipes, and matters of common
interest to the regular posters here. Not to read insults, filth, smut,
and any other vile content the *******s can think of.

If you frequent other groups that are worse than this, they're certainly
not ones I'd want to be part of.

I've been on usenet since somewhere around 1987, back then access was
so limited that you could read every article in every group in about
an hour.

Everyone has a computer, so we either killfile everyone, or ignore
them, it's our choice.

I've been on Usenet about the same length of time. I also have a very well
populated killfile. When I do see crap, it's usually because it's been
quoted by someone else.

And you get no sympathy from me. You refused to use killfiles, you read all
the bad stuff from the bad people, and now you post a sick, sad, "I'm
leaving, will y'all miss me?" message. It's almost as bad as the trolls.

I agree! Can you tell us what "*******" wrote the following, it's
*shocking*...and *vile*, even: !!! :

"**** you Morrow, and the kike Sheldon you rode in on. But leave it to a

See, the thing about the Waynes and Jills of the world is that they have no
self-awareness and thus lack any sense of humor (and perspective) about
themselves. So they come off as absurd people...they are always excusing
themselves and backpedaling and so forth their antics on this
group...they are deadly earnest, *leadenly* so, and that "lead" will sink
'em every time...

They suffer from the sin of mendacity, that's why I am continually bugging
them...

Unlike you and (from what I've read) most other people - I'm not
opposed to seeing the posters I've kill filed quoted by people I still
read. It keeps me in touch with why I KFed them in the first place.

Agent has a feature that allows you to kill subthreads. So if I have
set a filter on a person or subject all responses are also filtered. I
also have a view set to "not ignored." The number of "not ignored"
and "ignored" are about the same.

cakewalk.

Would you be willing to explain how to do that? There are two people
here I'd like to do that with.

Tools > Options > Navigation. Check the box at "the ignore command
applies to subthreads only." If you want to ignore the whole thread,
either go to the top message or do a shift I.

I have 2 views set up. One is "ignored Messages" and the other is
'not ignored." Near the Subject header click on the picture of
binoculars. Choose the views you want. My normal view is "not
ignored." If something shows up that has something I might want to
read, I change views and see what people are complaining about. Most
of the time I already have a good idea.

When you set it up this way you can create a permanent filter or you
can mark them on the fly.

Email me if you have other questions.

The _only reason ever_ to use a killfile is when everyone had dial up,
modems were super slow, and folks paid for being on line by the minute.
Anyone who uses a killfile today is a pinhead, too _weakminded_ to pass on
posters/threads they don't want to read, or are just LIARS.

That's the one we bought. It's just so confusing to me, compared to
the much earlier version I used to use. Desks? Huh?

Should run Agent, you can setup to auto delete, you never see them

We were discussing Agent. I have a fair number Usenet filters set up.
I also like to do some on the fly when threads change into something I
am not interested in.

No, but I find it depressing when the signal-to-noise ratio makes it a chore
to read. People love to kick the shit out of each other here. No reason
required. Besides, who's definition of 'doing the wrong thing' do we use? Do
we bash people because they're ***, or poor, or because they don't cook as
well as you?

> I'm glad I'm not you.

I'm OK with that.

They should, but many here don't seem to get that point. They just seem to
want people to feel bad no matter what. There's a lot of bile out there.

It's true. I just want Alan to bring Christy's cats in where they are safe
or give them to someone who will.

If you are so concerned about the cats, either offer to adopt them
yourself or offer to find someone to adopt them.

This is a great suggestion, George. I am so sure Alan would love to give me
the cats. **** you.

So you're saying that Alan wants to give them up?
