We should save these oddball & weirdo recipes and make them at a
cook-in. It would be interesting, if not delicious.

There is a possibility that it is good. When I was a kid my mother used
to make a tomato soup cake, which had things like cinnamon, nutmeg and
ginger in it. It had a similar icing. I used to like it.

Folks in the Amazon basin grow up enjoying grub worms steamed in
banana leaves.

I've made tomato soup cake before, which is quite like this one except the
substitution of catsup for the soup (in smaller quantity). It was actually
pretty good.

As I mentioned earlier, I had lots of tomato soup cake when I was a kid
and it was delicious. A friend used to male Chocolate Sauerkraut cake
and it was really good. The sauerkraut ends up tasting like coconut.

I've made all of the cakes except the Ketchup Cake, so I wouldn't be
adverse to trying it. The Chocolate Beet Cake turns out as a very rich
tasting, very moist cake. You'd not know the beets were in there.

With all that butter and brown sugar in the recipe, that's gotta be
great!

Wow! What a great recipe! I am going to stop by Wegmans (a big
supermarket near me) and pick up the ingredients to make this cake
tonight. I intend to bring it to work tomorrow. I am sure everyone at
work will get a kick out of it.

This illustrates why I never eat "home made" stuff that coworkers
bring to work.
I really like most them, but the stuff they call food...

My husband's mother made a fruitcake that included tomato soup, but she
died of breast cancer when she was 50 and his brother threw her recipes
in the trash.

Yup. Your newsgroup handle is appropriate.

As I was standing in front of the seafood counter at Wegmans on Thursday
night, the woman behind the counter noticed me carrying a copy of the
ketchup cake recipe. I took a copy of the recipe into the store with me
so I could buy the ingredients on it.

She asked me if I was really going to make that ketchup cake. I handed
her the recipe and I told her, that's why I was there; to buy the
ingredients for the recipe. She read the recipe and crinkled her nose
and said it sounds weird. Then she asked me when I planned to make this
cake. I told her on Sunday. She asked me to bring her in a slice. I told
her she reminds me of those people who drive by a serious car accident
and insist on looking at it. She laughed and said I was right. Then I
proceeded to buy all the ingredients except the eggs and red food dye.

I will pick up the eggs on Sunday. I couldn't find food dye at Wegmans,
even after asking for it at the customer service desk. Hopefully, the
Shop Rite near me will have the food dye.

I will let you know how the cake tuns out.

If the dye doesn't add to the flavour, why not leave it out? I mistrust
those unnecessary chemicals.

Natural food colorants are no more chemicals than the foods they color. If
not for the colorants most foods would be shades of grey, and not at all
appetizing. Most everything you eat and drink contains natural food
colorants or is itself a natural food colorant.

But is that a *natural* food colorant in the recipe?

There's a picture of the cake on my facebook page. Feel free to friend
me under my address. The cake came out pretty
good, although the icing was too thin.
