What the **** are you talking about?

What is a "Flat," and what does "the no purpose car company America ever
heard of" mean?

Work out what you're ranting about first, then come back and write
something that means something.

A friend of mine in high school had a Fiat Spider. It was a nice little
car, fun to drive and very reliable.

I have had two GM cars, several Fords, an AMC, two Hondas, two Mazdas
and a Datsun. I have never owned a Chrysler vehicle. When I was working
in the equipment section of my government department we had a fleet of
more than 100 pickup trucks that we bought by tender. We had the best
luck with Fords and GMs were the second best. The Dodge trucks were the
worst.

I had a Fiat 850 Spyder convertible sports car for a few years.
It was the most fun car I ever had, despite having such a tiny
engine (just under 50 cu in, so it qualified for treatment as
a motorcycle under some smog law somewhere). Fun to drive
on the freeway in the rain with the top down, because the
windshield kept the interior dry. As long as I didn't stop,
I didn't get wet (except for the top of my head).

Nowadays, I care more about safety and wouldn't be likely to own
a convertible again. Especially a lightweight car like that
which would go into a skid at the least provocation on a wet
street.

Mark,

But weren't the Spider's micro sports cars?

I can't picture Chrysler going that route. They're the American Gas Hog car
company.

Fiat is just a wish and a prayer BS promise.

Dimitri,

<snipped>

While a great car and a great model line as you so expertly pointed out,
whose going to make a better Fiat?

You and I and most others know Chrysler won't improve the Fiat line. Rather
just succeed in destroying it.

That said, I haven't seen many Fiats on the roads in and around town.

Best,

Andy

Hasn't Fiat also had some experience with near bankruptcy? Perhaps I
should not mention: "Fix it again Tony", "Fix it alla time", "Fix it
again tomorrow" etc.

Andy,

I think your vision or perspective has narrowed. The object is not for
Chrysler to fix Fiat it is for Fiat to fix Chrysler.

It is important to remember Fiat has 2 great histories, The first is making
" the peoples cars" their 500 CC & 600 CC Little mouse (Topolino) was the
best selling car in the world, Secondly they are very adept at
understanding foreign markets as illustrated by their world wide joint
ventures.

The Chapter 11 that Chrysler has now entered will have several effects;

First it can void the UAW contracts.
Second it will reduce a major portion of their debt -

Why did they file - simple the creditors could not agree on a debt reduction
formula and the government said ENOUGH.

I suspect after all is said and done the Money that Fiat will pay will
ultimately end up in the hands of the lawyers and the creditors in order to
settle for some percentage of their debt. Until that time a DIP (Debtor in
Possession) is in fact running the company.

Without question there are gross over simplifications for a very complex
problem.

Dimitri

The Crossfire isn't all that big. Nice handling car, too. I rented one for
the weekend when visiting my cousin in Kentucky last year.

Nah!

I rolled over 99,999 miles over to 00,000 in my 1967 VW 1800cc bug on the
way from Oakland to San Diego and pulled over and loaded a pipe of
something illegal to celebrate and then got back on the road.

Then, in my rear view mirror I saw an approaching black dot. Turned into a
black Porsche that passed me at probably 150 mph, nearly blowing me off the
road.

I was a micro-Porsche at "wishful thinking" 70 mph!

Dimitri,

All good points!

Now think, why did Dymler/Chrysler go their separate ways?

I wouldn't want to get into bed with Chrysler if I was Fiat.

NOT!!

I lived and commuted in CA for over 15 yrs. Despite the lack of ice and
snow, necessitating salt, Fiats never made past the 80s. I once saw a Fiat
Spyder on the freeway in the late 90s. I was shocked, as I hadn't seen one
in over 10 yrs. This in a state second only to Cuba for old cars.

Fiat Spyders and 850s were HUGE in CA, in their day, which was the 60-70s.
Twenty years later and they were like 5 cent Cokes. Same happened to
Renaults and Peaugots. Common as ants around spilled honey one day, a vague
memory the next.

BTW, Fiat has ALWAYS had a **** poor reputation for reliability, their major
claim to fame being they are cheap. The Italian Chevy.

When I had the Spyder, it had great handling at a time
when all American cars had terrible handling. My previous
car was a 1968 Ford Mustang convertible, and I compared
its handling to a railroad boxcar with a steering wheel.
It was horrible.

Shortly thereafter, you could get that good handling in
most Japanese cars, but Detroit cars were still crap.
Today, all cars handle like sports cars, compared to
30 years ago when only sports cars handled like sports
cars, and everything else was like driving a schoolbus.

Back in the 60's and 70's FIAT provided turn-key auto plants to the USSR,
where the Russki version of the Fiat 124 was produced for many years as the
Lada. Fiat also did a similar deal with Poland, where the 124 was dubbed
the "Polski Fiat", and IIRC they also helped the Yugoslavs set up their
first auto plants, where various versions of Fiats were sold under the
"Zastava" name (the Zastava concern was also responsible for the notoriously
awful "Yugo", 'memba them?)...

So Fiats in various guises were the first widely available car for the
average "consumer" when some of the Communist Bloc countries were trying to
get their auto industries off the ground...

In fact the Russians built a whole new town around the Fiat plant, naming it
"Togliatti", in honor of a famous Italian Communist Party leader...

Arri,

I can't remember the last time I saw a Fiat car TV commercial.

What chance of breaking down and getting back on the road in less than a
few days would I have?

No idea what a 'flat' is. But my first car was a Fiat. Put 85,000 miles
on it (in addition to the 30,000 on it when bought) before it fell apart
completely. Four cylinders but no problem getting 85+ MPH on the
motorway

124 Sports Coupe?

I had 3 of those in the 80's. DOHC engine, 5-speed, 4-wheel disk brakes,
pretty good handling, nifty European horn - what's not to like? Well,
OK, rust...

Depends on the car and the repair shop; doesn't matter who makes it. Any
American car is just as likely to fail catastrophically as any 'foreign'
car.

Broken down somewhere on the road, there are no doubt far fewer qualfied
Fiat mechanics and parts suppliers in the heartland of America compared to
Ford or Cadillac.

The Fiat 128 and 131 were popular back in the 70's. Then the tooling was
sold to another country in Europe and they were re-incanated as the Yugo.
Fiat and Yugo has many relationships building cars. What a team!.

I liked my 128. I bought my X-1/9 with over a hundred thousand on
it. I think that the odometer had ceased working at 138, xxx (I don't
know why I remember that). I got another maybe 20,000 before I junked
it. It was a fun car. For a while I drove it with a bad alternator.
I took the battery out every few days to charge it. So as not to
waste battery power, I always pop-started it. This was in Tampa,
where it was totally flat. I drove that thing straight through from
Tampa to St. Louis twice, going way too fast through part of
Kentucky. It still took 16 hours.

What I want is a little car that we only use to get around town. One
that we only put a couple of thousand miles a year on. I'd like it to
get the kind of mileage that a Toyota Aygo 1.0 liter 3 cyl gets. If
it's Fiat instead of Toyota, so be it. Either that or a mini utility,
4wd with reasonable ground clearance. I wish I had one of those old
Suzukis that had the rollover issues. Heck, I wouldn't roll it. I
understand the limitations of a high center of gravity vehicle. I own
a Jeep Wrangler that I guess I'll put the money into fixing, but only
because I can't get a lightweight, fuel efficient 4x4. We need
something of the sort for off grid camping.

What aggravates me is that I bought a brand new 1992 Geo Metro in late
'92. It got 51mpg hwy. Why the heck do Yarises and Fits and the like
only get in the high 30s? Why can't I buy an Aygo here? It's bad
enough that I have to look at freakin' PIGS driving around in Hummers
(God, I'd love to see them taken out by IEDs), but I can't go to the
other extreme. The Smart might be OK, but I have a 3 person family.
Americans have a F'd up mindset, but not all of us. Those of us who
cannot afford hybrids should be able to buy high mileage cheap cars.
Maybe, just maybe, Fiat will give us that alternative.

I believe that Fiat does that with all their cars. We are familiar with
the "Yugo" here in the US because they were imported and sold here.
