Maybe we should ask if you're ok? maxine, I was too far from the recent PA earthquake to feel it. 2.0 is very mild anyway. Once, when a housing developer across the valley (maybe 1/2 mile away as the crow flies) dynamited something, I felt the ground shockwave shake the house a couple seconds later. Now you want to hear stupid?!? My good friend just bought his first home, 15 miles from the San Andreas fault and had every excuse under the sun why he didn't need earthquake insurance! For the same price he felt he was better off with a new 60" plasma TV. That's stupid! [rolling eyes/shaking head] Best, Andy -- HONK if I'm paying your mortgage! |

The premiums are high, the deductible is WAY high and coverage for anything other than the house structure is pretty much non existent. I had earthquake insurance up to the '94 earthquake which just about broke my insurance company. They argued every charge and nit-picked every expense and in general screwed us out of every penny they could. When it came time to renew the new policy looked nothing like the old. So I didn't renew. It would be cheaper for me to move out of California than try to collect on the new earthquake insurance policies. Ron Kelley |

And true, inscos can be BUMS!!! when it comes to claims. "We're not in the business of losing money," as the saying goes! When I moved to PA from CA, I maintained my earthquake insurance but here it was $75/annual with a $25,000 deductible. I could live with that UNTIL, one year (after 15 years in residence) they sneaked in a exception clause that declared they wouldn't cover any masonry damage. Well, that's more than half my house (inside and out), including cinderblock, fieldstone, slate, "used brick" and ceramic bathroom tile. They obviously got wind of the brittleness of "brick and mortar" during earthquakes. I canceled my earthquake insurance that instant. The BUMS!!!!!! After the 94 Northridge quake they virtually rebuilt our place no questions asked. It got the point I just let my contractor talk with the adjuster step by step. Dimitri |
