I'm still wondering what "put the [food] on top of the freezer
shelf" means". I assume it means to thaw them out, but I just can't
picture a a fridge like this.

We have a small chest freezer for longer-term storage. Anything in there
destined to be eaten fairly soon gets put on top so that it is in view.
Things that are on the lower level will stay there for a while longer
