If the grain in the wood is all running one way, sand with the grain. Work
down to a fine grit. If stains still remain, rub with lemon juice (half a
lemon) and let stand a bit until stains are gone. The lemon will raise the
grain again. Rinse with a damp cloth. Allow the board to dry and finish
with really fine grit sand paper.
