I'd like to comment on this.

Perhaps today it is made in Texas, but circa 1973 it was definitely
made in Camden. The whole town smelled like tomatoes in the fall
processing season. Huge numbers of New Jersey (The Garden State!)
farms fed tomatoes into the Campbells soup/tomato products factory
pipeline. Even today, I think the very best tomatoes come from the
sandy soil and hot humid summers of rural New Jersey.

What are Awful Awfuls? That rings an extremely vague bell.

Silvar Beitel,

I don't know the history like you do but I did attend a tomato festival in
Camden. Sadly it only lasted two annuals long.

The Jersey "Fresh" tomatoes I've often spoke of are absolute champions!!! I
eat them like apples!!!

Can't wait!!! :9

Best,

Andy

I can't say for certain what Utah's contribution to cuisine has been,
other than dutch oven cooking.

Back home, though: Leroy, NY is the birthplace of Jello (coincidentally,
Utah is the primary consumer of the product in the US); Hilton, NY was
the site of the Heinz Company's cider vinegar bottling concern (many of
the orchards, storage buildings and processing buildings still stand);
Rochester, NY is the home of the Zweigle's sausage business and it's
notorious White Hots; Dunkirk Ice Cream, a large manufacturer of ice
cream products for several brand names, is in Dunkirk, NY (I once worked
in that plant. Ugh). Buffalo, NY has the Anchor Bar and it's chicken
wings. Of course, in WNY and the Genesee Valley there is beer, beer,
beer. New York, NY has seen the birth of several home-grown comestibles,
too many to name.

I grew up a few miles from Altoona, PA. Boyer Brothers is still
there; they make Mallo Cup and Smoothie and a few other candies.

Tipton, PA wasn't far away. Delgrosso spaghetti sauce.

Current residence is Murray KY, home of Ellis Blue Ribbon Popcorn.

We're in Greenville, SC.....home of Duke's Mayonnaise; and, if you eat
too much of it - we're also home to Pepto-Bismol. We used to have a
Sara Lee plant here also, but I'm not sure it was the baked goods. I
thought CF Sauer was home based here, but that's Richmond. I think I'm
forgetting someone.

Also from Camden (which is the next town over from where I live) is
Swanson frozen dinners and Vlasic pickles. About an hour's drive north
of Camden is Trenton, which is known for Taylor Pork Roll.

My home town is Philadelphia where we are famous for our soft pretzels,
TastyKakes, scrapple (mostly from nearby Lancaster), Pepper pot soup,
and let's not forget the Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing. Wikipedia disagrees with me, but I know we
have a 'Hidden Valley' here and his first factory was here in Sparks,
NV. This link vaguely validates my claim
<http://www.culinary.org/exhibition/atb/pressrelease/7.pdf>. It's told
(unsubstantiated hearsay) that he became convinced HVR was a hit at the
'Hidden Valley Country Club' on the east side of Reno. That's my story,
and I'm sticking with it.

You're forgetting Rolling Rock. The ****water of beers originally from PA,
now brewed in New Jersey! Boy, are their days numbered!!! LOL!

I really didn't want to mention them but after mentioning Bud Light, no harm
done!

Yuengling has a terrible aftertaste! We used to have Friday 5 pm meetings in
the library that was nothing more than a beer fest. I protested at having to
drink Yuengling. Boss asked me "what do you drink?" I replied "Bud Light." I
about got fired and I was only a volunteer!!! LOLOL!

Best,

Andy

NYC is famous for too many food brands to list, but I grew up in Brooklyn a
block away from the Bonomo's Turkish Taffy factory... Oh, oh, oh, it's
Bonomo... Smack It & Crack It!

They were the signature milkshake at Newport Creamery, a speedier
version of Friendly's ice cream and sandwich shops. Awful Big and
Awful Good. Drink 4 and get the 5th one free. Mostly teenaged boys
won that challege.

Déjà,
Had dinner at the Victory Pub last night. Great place!

Food is terrific (and reasonable) and many beers only available at the
brewery.

Hi Andy!

There's a Philly cheesesteak joint in Chicago (Philly's Best) that
imports their meat & Tastykakes from there (Philly that is). Pretty
good to, IIRC.

Kris,
Unless they import the rolls, it aint happenin'. I gave up trying to find a
decent cheesesteak when travelling years ago. It's not hard to get the meat
right but the bread is a different story.

How about Ted Drew's? That was my favorite spot in STL.

Well, THAT part I'm not sure of. They definitely were great though -
they really stood out from other cheesesteaks I've had at other
places, both in taste and consistency.

nancy,

Heh heh heh heh heh!

Yeah, the faster we fill those in, the faster PA can build more assisted
living housing.

I should probably take a number sometime soon! <chuckles>
