Default Express lines in the supermarket - a cute story

I hope it's true; a friend sent it to me:

"I was in the express lane at the store quietly fuming. Completely
ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the check-out
line pushing a cart piled high with groceries.

Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward
looked into the cart and asked sweetly, "So which ten items would you
like to buy?"

Once. Just once, I want to be in line behind this woman and in the
checkout lane with this checker.

Perfect question for her to ask of the customer!

It would be interesting to know if the woman was forced to move to a
nonexpress line.
My market upped the express limit to 15 items. The day will probably
come when they eliminate express, as it's not enforced now.
One really NICE feature at my market is the ability to purchase a book
of stamps right there from the cashier. Saves me a lot of trips to the
post office. (Yeah, I know - some of you never mail a thing...I'd like
to know how you do it, same for "I never write a check", but that's
another thread). One of these days I'll write my market's home office
and ask for a bin where we can return those @$%# foam trays.

I love my local grocery store. For a small town, population fewer
than 5,000, it has a fairly good selection and good quality. All of
the employees are helpful. If a checker does not have anyone in her
line, she moves over and bags for another checker. There are no
express lines. If the open lines start getting too long there is a
call for someone to come and open another one. I even see the manager
and assistant manager bagging groceries.

That cashier should be running the supermarket, if not the world.

The LAST time this subject was discussed, the general consensus was it
was bad customer service.

I think the express cash registers should have a ten item limit that
can be rung up. Item eleven voids the sale and we have to start all
over.

Item eleven *completes* the sale and any remaining items have to be returned
to the end of the line if the customer still wants to buy them.
