I bought two packs at our local Walmarts - both were packaged in
Mexico.

Pedrugada Salami con Jamon Serrano

Pedrugada Salami Hungario

I had dreams of making a declicious Italiam sandwich with onions,
lettuce and tomato; I also had plain boiled-ham to add.

But the packaged meat is so salty - it gives you a jolt when you taste
it - akin to anchovies.

I don't understand how you can eat and enjoy this. Is there an
effective way of soaking out the salt?

Different situation here in Mexico. Don't have a lot of choice for
specialty foods - lots of rice and beans, though - hundreds of
varieties. They all have the same taste.

Walmarts Supercenter has as much - if not more- choices than most
other shops.

I don't understand why you believed you'd actually get good food at Walmart.
As to your question, yes, soaking will reduce the salt. You can probably
boil it out even quicker, but why bother.

See my other message; there's not much choice unless you like rice and
beans - and they all taste the same, regardless.

When I cross the border, I stock up on decent food, but I run out
quickly and only cross maybe once a month.

I think you can probably find lots of variety in Mexico if you learn to
cook. Many more things than beans and rice. Coldcuts suck.

"Packaged in Mexico" should have raised a huge red flag.

I buy cold cuts at Walmart all the time, never have a problem, but never
heard of those brands you bought. The Walmart here has a to-order deli
counter, they sell various US of A brand names; Hormel, Boar's Head, Russer,
etc. Just yesterday I bought a pound each of Hormel Di Lusso Genoa, Hormel
sliced pepperoni. Boar's Head turkey breast, and Tobin's bologna. I buy
cold cuts at Walmart because they have a huge turnover, everything is fresh,
their deli dept is scrupulously clean, and they charge like half the price
of the stupidmarket delis. Tonight's dinner will be a Chef's Salad w/turkey
breast... cats love turkey.

But Ensenada enjoys great fresh seafood at the local pier/fish market,
and great fruits and vegetables grown in Baja (a lot of which is
shipped to California). Isn't Mercado Maria Luisa still there?
They've offered excellent produce for many years.

You're in Mexico -- have ceviche tostadas and fish tacos and carne
asada and barbacoa and local cheeses made just south of Ensenada ....
why look for cold cuts in the first place? -aem

I don't understand how people can by food at Walmart which
is famous
for demanding ever cheaper prices from its suppliers until
it drives them
out of business.

Doesn't that scare you into wondering exactly what you are
eating?

I think this qualifies as a cold cut:
http://www.ditalia.com/product/Volpi...ed_Cured_Meats
It doesn't suck.

Soak it in a bit of clean water for a few hours.

I personally gave up on packaged luncheon meats ages ago due to this
issue. They are not generally worth the effort unless you can dilute
that salt out somehow!

It's insane.

Thanks for all your kind suggestions (?)

Problem has been somewhat solved.

I went for coffee downtown with my neighbor this morning, and I was
telling him about rec.foods and my complaints about Walmarts.

He reminded me of Cosco, which is south of the city; he's a member, so
we went there, and I joined . Four hundred pesos for a membership
($25.00).

Good selection of meats, fish and cold cuts - as well as many other
items - grocery and non-grocery.

I got a couple of NY strips, a nice fillet of salmon and two packages
of sausages that are absolutely delicious and reminds me of English
sausage.

Walmarts had it four years ago, and I was eating it several times a
week. They ran out and never got it again -despite me talking to the
manager and showing him an empty wrapper Obertal Chorizo Argentina
made in Mexico, and you woud swear that you're eating fine English
pork sausage.

He said they would have it in ten days, but that was three years ago.

Happy day cuz I've found it again!

Take it back to the store. What better way to let Walmart know they sell
shitty products?

Maybe the ones you buy, but there are plenty of "cold cuts" that are not
made from mechanically separated turkey and chicken, but rather from
primal pieces of cow and cured pork.

This is Mexico. They don't know what to do when you bring something
back. Refunds and returns are relatively unheard of. It's slowly
changing, though.

OFF topic example....

I bought a defective battery at Auto Zone. It kept losing its
charge, and when I took it back, all they would do is re-charge it.
They refused to exchange it, but I let them re-charge it on two
occasions. Then I told the manager that I was going to call my credit
card company and dispute the charge.

Then she exchanged the battery.

Too much nonsense and bother.

You are fortunate to have a Walmart that carries the Boar's Head brand. Most
don't-particularly out of the NY area. My SO's Mom found a Boar's Head
(Brunkhorst) truck out near her in New Mexico. They were trying the brand in
Walmart-nobody bought it due to the price. Result? No more Boar's Head.

Gee, can't have it both ways, for better quality you have to pay the higher
price. Boar's Head does cost more but not that much more... and the Walmart
here charges a full 40% less for all their different brands of cold cuts
than the exact same brands at the chain stupidmarkets... their deli is also
cleaner, more modern, and their clerks are neater/cleaner looking, and
obviously better trained. I won't buy fresh meat at Walmart, don't even
look at it anymore, but Boar's Head is the same no matter where. The
Walmart Deli sells good cheeses and olives too. I shop there like every six
weeks or so and can drop $200 easy, but I only buy certain things... I stock
up on critter bread too... they give a big discount on "used" bread, they
knock like 75% off... at the other stores yer lucky if they knock off 25%.
Walmart also charges significantly less for cat litter and pet food too,
even better than the pet emporiums like Petco. Walmart prices are also
better on toiletries, razor blades, mouth wash, shampoo, OTC meds. And I
save on gardening supplies too. Walmart is not a bad store, it's the same
as any other store, you need to know how to shop is all... I mean like it's
not where I'd buy clothing there but their big bags of frozen veggies are as
good as anywhere and they cost a lot less. And Walmart is by far the best
place to buy auto tires. And no, I don't own stock, but I get tired of
hearing the one dimensional anti Walmart arguments, especially the idiotic
claims that Walmart put the small neighborhood stores out of business, they
certainly did not, those small stores put themselves out of business, with
their only show in town greediness and rude independant attitudes.

Amen to that. They may have a 'bigger selection' but a bigger selection of
what? Everything they sell is of inferior quality. Rather a limited
selection of quality from another retailer than a huge selection of dreck
from Wally World.

That's just not true. Most products sold at Walmart are the very same
products sold by other retailers, same exact brands, same exact quality,
only at substantially lower prices. I think their fresh meats and produce
are inferior, but it also costs less so is a bargain for those less
demanding, same as their clothing and home furnishings, I don't buy those,
but for those on low income who need to clothe kids there is nothing bad
about cheap clothing that they they will out grow long before they wear out.
But most everything else is the same quality as from any other store but at
lower cost. I buy much of my gardening supplies and plant nursery stock
from Walmart... their plants come from the same wholesale nurseries as any
sold elsewhere for near twice the price, and I can buy certain quality
brands of tools at bargain prices that are difficult to find elsewhere,
Walmart has in stock just about every tool produced by Fiskars, in my opinon
the best quality, best engineered tools of their type on the planet. I
bought my flat screen Vizio TV at Walmart for $100 less than I could find it
anywhere else. Kitchenware sold at Walmart are the same brands and quality
as sold anywhere but for less. Walmart also has the best deal on Rx drugs.
So tell me again how a bottle of Head and Shoulders shampoo at a 25% lower
price than anywhere else is inferior at Walmart.

It's a no brainer that a Mom and Pop store charges more for the same thing.
But Walmart does have the reputation of 'sell to us for a certain price,
else we will blackball you and put you out of business.'
(without a specific reference to that I do beleive they have been convicted
of it).

There are plenty of independants that survived the big box stores, even
though they charge higher prices, because they give superior service, are
truly knowlegeable about what they sell, will special order, and most
importantly they are courtious and friendly. I always choose the local
independants over the big box stores, so long as they offer the
aforementioned ammenities... and I really don't care if I have to pay a few
pennies more, often it ends up costing less because I only gotta travel 3
miles instead of 30 miles. I don't care that the small independant
hardware-lumber store in town charges a couple of bucks a gallon more for
paint, because they sell Benjamin Moore (none of the big box stores do), a
much superior paint, and they take all the time necessary to help me decide
and mix my colors, and they keep a record of all my color formulas room by
room, even the stain clor for my deck. And if I phone to ask if they have
something in stock they check immediately and if they have it they will put
it aside for me, even if only a 50¢ carriage bolt, and they know my name and
know me on sight, even know where I live if I need a delivery... just try to
call Lowes or Home Depot for any info, you'll be on hold half the day being
shuffled around and never get an accurate response, and when you get there
nobody knows you.

I bought a pair of Dockers at Casual Male for about $60. I bought a pair of
George brand at Wal Mart for $20. Put them side by side and you cannot tell
them apart. Everything, down to the small pocket in the right side pocket,
spare button, belt loops are exactly the same. Yes, some of their cloths
are lesser quality, but not all.

Stop & Shop now has the same deal, but WM started it. My out of pocket for
prescription drugs dropped by about $70 a month.

This is because most casual clothing is made in the same overseas factory,
only the label is different, that they charge so much less for the same item
just proves that Walmart is not a bad place to shop. It's difficult to find
casual wear made in the USA these days. With kids clothing longiviety
doesn't much matter, they grow out of it long before it wears out. I'm hard
on casual clothing, especially with the dirty work I do here on my 'farm' so
I buy only certain brands that are made in the US, like Carhartt, Dickies,
etc. I buy most of my casual clothes on line:
http://www.ruggedoutfitters.net/default.asp and my local Agway carries a
nice selection of the clothing worn by farmers and tradesmen.

Yes, many of the larger pharmacies have jumped on the bandwagon. I use a
mail order pharmacy (Teledrug) because it's in network with my medical
insurance, their prices are comparable to Walmart. I had at one time
considered switching to Walmart, only Teledrug delivers for free so for me
it actually costs less, and they carry a much larger variety of drugs,
especially the branded ones that I use... Walmart doesn't carry even one of
the drugs I use... they also take care of all the renewals through the
doctor, and do all the insurance paperwork, both my own plan and with
Medicare. I don't need to do anything but phone for them to mail my
order... I could choose automatic delivery but my 90 day supply sometimes
lasts 120 days and longer because my prescriptions are written
"use/take/apply as needed" so I prefer to order as needed. Years ago I had
automatic delivery and after a couple of years I accumulatated so much meds
that I barely had space to store it and it was beginning to last past the
expiration date. Keep in mind that not all Rx are pills, with pills the
dose is typically finite; 30 days/30 pills. But a lot of meds are liquids,
creams, gels, and salves that are applied in no particular exact quantity.
I try to use as little as possible as my meds contain steroids. I have
stasis dermatitis. After many years I've discovered I can manage this
condition very well with Bag Balm, no side effects and costs much less. My
Dermatologist doesn't like to hear that I can get better care at a
Veterinarian. LOL
