Don't you realize that when stores have a sale on ground beef, especially family size packages, it's to dump the old meat they couldn't sell before the sell-by date and/or is poor quality, plus a good percentage is trimmings and scraps. You haven't a clue what/who you're eating. I regularly buy USDA Choice top round roasts at $1.99/lb. I can grind 4 lbs in about one minute. What's called "boneless pork chops" is also regularly $1.99/lb, grinds beautifully with the beef for meatballs, meat loaf, chili... I could never understand folks who have $50,000+ designer kitchens filled with every expensive piece of designer cookware and appliance yet won't spring for a friggin' meat grinder... tells me all that kitchen money is wasted on just-for-show because they can't cook a lick and are afflicted with TIAD because they sure do seem to enjoy dining on mystery meat shit. |

Yeah yeah yeah, OK! I just made a little (4oz) burger on Panera Sourdough w a little catsup, and YUM! You didn't read Straub's website, did you? Straub's is noted for their fine meats in St Louis. Bryan, care to chime in on this? Let ole Brooklyn1 know what you think? John Kuthe... |

Bryan, care to chime in on this? Let ole Brooklyn1 know what you think? John Kuthe... I read enough of their web site to know that their meat is no better or worse than any typical stupidmarket.... I read their meat specials to see if they'd say of which beef cut their ground beef consisted, they don't, it's pure mystery meat. If your usual ground beef purchase is 4 lbs then you are a fool to not be grinding your own... I can buy a 4 lb roast for $8 and you're paying $12 for 4lbs of mystery meat. |

And you know this how? You've been there and observed how they prepare ground meat at that particular store? Or maybe you have been at the local store here that doesn't do that (my nephew worked his way through college there and always remarked about their high standards)? Or maybe you've been at my friend's shop and observed their procedures? How can you possibly make such a statement as if you just know how *every* single store prepares ground meat? And they DO prepare it right there at the store too! I've been in there many times and they have to go back and grind me some more. And I worked for a month or so in their Deli too, last Summer. And you are correct, Straub's has impeccably high standards of their foods. Commensurately high prices too! (They throw out a lot of stuff.) One of those stores where you can walk out with one grocery bag and have it cost $100 if you are not careful! But YUM! And meats have always been their specialty. John Kutbe... |

After all, that movie was from 82' with the head line "Meet the Blands! They're square . .. . They're in love . . . And they kill people." I'm guessing you were in Jr. High. What were you doing watching movies like that? Shame on you. You should have been tweaking the souls of the young men you came into contact with. :-: Bob |

To me one of the best satirical/ironic films of the last century, thank you for the reference; I think I'll watch it tommorow evening. It is a spectacular film, on a par with Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange." Nice doggie. pavane |

If you really believe that they are taking their perfectly good roasts and steaks that they sell for $8/lb and grind them up so they can get $3/lb then I have this bridge you may want to buy. The only reason any meat market sells previously ground meat is to minimize their losses by at least getting something for meat that they'd otherwise have to shitcan, it's that simple. On Sunday I get the circular by email for the Price Chopper chain here in the northeast, just looked at it an hour ago, among other good meat sale items they have boneless chuck steak on sale this week for $1.59/lb, I'll take a look later next week. Oh, and I never buy stew meat either, I gotta see the meat cut... how hard is it to cut a roast/steak into small pieces, how friggin' lazy can folks be that they buy fercocktah mystery stew meat. I haven't tried at the market here yet but back on Long Island when they had say boneless chuck on sale (steaks or roasts) I'd ask the meat manager to hack me off like a 10 pound hunk, when wrapped and weighed they knocked 20¢/lb off the sale price because my buying bulk saved them labor... no problem to portion it out myself when I got home. Ten pounds is not a lot of chuck, a nice 5 pound roast in the freezer for pot roast, and I'd grind up 5 pounds right away for like six burgers for the freezer and the rest a nice meat loaf to cook that day. Imagine, folks eat fercocktah mystery meat yet boast about drinking $35 wine but can't afford a meat grinder... something doesn't compute, oh yes it does, they are mentally ill and they can't cook. Folks who post about eating out often can't cook, because if they knew how to cook they'd not be eating that mystery crap that comes out of restuarant kitchens nearly as often as they do. There is no such thing as a privately owned restuarant that sells wholesome food... only institutional food has a good chance of wholesomeness. Your local hospital serves wholesome food. Prisons serve wholesome food. The US military serves the most wholesome food on the planet, they get first dibs over everyone... these institutions don't always have very good cooks is all. Restaurants, especially the fancy schmany highly rated ones, often have very accomplished cooks, they have to in order to make shit palatable. |

There's a chain in northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin called Woodmans. They were advertising 5 pound tubes of ground beef dirt cheap. It was packaged like breakfast sausage in a plant somewhere. There's no way I'd buy that. But a place like Straub's or the one's I'm familiar with I'd buy from. But I'd still rather grind my own. Lou |

You really need to get your massively powerful computer like brain adjusted. If chuck is $1.49/lb and they grind it and sell it as ground chuck or sirloin or whatever it doesn't mean they are grinding $8/lb meat. Its really that simple. Unless you are claiming that your massively powerful computer like brain that was maybe given to you by space aliens has also made you omniscient you can't possibly know how *every* store processes meat. Its really that simple. > > On Sunday I get the circular by email for the Price Chopper chain here in > the northeast, just looked at it an hour ago, among other good meat sale > items they have boneless chuck steak on sale this week for $1.59/lb, I'll > take a look later next week. If you want to see disgusting there is a local plant that makes various packaged beef products. Their most popular being a "steakum" type product. My buddy owns a commercial refrigeration business and I get to see various locations where they may be working. The plant sells under its own brand and makes various other labels for big box. They use real beef to make their version. The big box version is made from big frozen cubes of "meat and meat by products" that they buy from somewhere. It has a weird pink color and doesn't really look like meat. |

I didn't get any because the grinder is at the other place and I wouldn't freeze it before grinding. Home ground beef for half of Straubs price aint a bad deal. I've only had the new grinder for a few months but I'd say it's already paid for itself. I dunno if you read the post that I mentioned I paid 15 bucks for it brand new in the box. They keep the store cool with A/C, and the meat dept even cooler as the back room is one big refrigerator. That's where they keep and cut/process all their meat. Their ground beef is ground as needed and put in a big tray (maybe 10lbs at a time) in their cold display case with all their other meats. I've bought ground beef where they have to go back and grind me more because their display is less than I want to purchase. This is NOT styro-tray shrink wrapped ground beef! I was telling the butcher today about how folks on RFC were making denigrating comments about "mystery meat" and stuff like that. They found it very amusing too, as they (better than anyone else) knows how Straub's has some of the highest quality meats in town! John Kuthe... |
