The Church of Scientology is opposed to psychology and psychiatry.
They believe that most illnesses are caused by infestations of spirits
of murdered aliens!

Thomas Szasz, though not a Scientologist, supports their position.

Szasz is a close associate of the Competitive Enterprise Institute
(CEI). Do not be fooled by CEI.
۬CEI is not a libertarian organization. They are a neocon
organization. The majority of their funding comes from oil and tobacco
companies.

One of their experts is Myron Ebell. In the past, he has received six
figure retainers from ExxonMobil. Ebell has no scientific training
whatsoever. His €œjob€� is to make you think increasing gas prices are
somehow good for the environment!

Another expert is John Berlau. Berlau is pathetic. He used to be a
hack writer for conservative publications. He could not get his
stories legitimately, so he resorted to underhanded tactics. This
caught up with him, and his journalistic career was over.

Berlau, like Ebell, is a global warming denier. Berlau has many odd
ideas. He believes that DDT is not toxic. He believes that trees
pollute more than cars. He believes that if you heat a gas, it gets
heavier. In his defense, he does know a thing or two about hot air€¦

Andrew Langer left CEI to form his own organization, the Institute for
Liberty (IFL).

Do not be deceived by the name. Langer is an outspoken critic of free
speech!

In the past, Langer mounted a relentless attack on Ileana Rosenthal.

This resulted in litigation. Also on Langers side? None other than
Monica Pignotti, a very interesting person.

Pignotti, not so coincidentally, used to be a Scientologist. She left
Scientology, and became a practitioner of the equally bizarre and
pseudoscientific therapies of Roger Callahan, Thought Field Therapy
and Voice Technology.

Now, Pignotti spends a great deal of time attacking therapists who
work with adopted children. This is part of a joint effort by
Scientology and the likes of CEI to denigrate accepted, scientifically
justified practices and hopefully replace them with quackery and
pseudoscience. Hot air and murdered aliens, indeed!

One of Pignottis associates is Larry Sarner. Sarner is an inventor,
and he has a miraculous accomplishment: a voting machine that does not
work!

Sarner and his associates swindled investors out of vast amounts of
money before the house of cards came tumbling down. Think of this as
Enron or Bernie Madoff, but on a smaller scale. Now Sarner practices
propaganda. His methods are identical to those of the Church of
Scientology, and, a close examination of his writings shows that he
may believe some of L. Ron Hubbards idiotic ideas about the nature of
science and mathematics!

In one of Hubbards €œarticles€� he claims that calculus was invented by
the Luce family (they established Time magazine). Oddly, or maybe not,
one of the people Sarner swindled was Luces son. Was this revenge
perpetrated for Sarners paragon, Hubbard, or merely an attempt by
Sarner to line his pockets with the proceeds of quackery and
pseudoscience?

Sarner and his wife, Linda Rosa, operate various websites. One
deserves special mention: a blog about torturing children. Recent
revelations about the Church of Scientologys institutionalize
practices of physical abuse may yield interesting and ultimately
connections here, possibly going to far as to divulge the reason this
horrible blog exists!

This blog contains links to the work of one Charly D. Miller. Miller
makes vague claims about being an expert witness and consultant. What
is not vague is that her website is full of copyrighted material-used
without the permission of the copyright holders!

The person who tries to give an appearance of legitimacy to these
efforts is Jean Mercer. Mercer holds a Ph.D. in psychology but has
never held a license.

Mercer runs a blog on Psychology Today. When people came to the blog
and questioned her lack of practical experience and associations with
the likes of Sarner and Pignotti, Mercer disabled blog comments. How
very totalitarian, how very neocon, how very George Bush of her!

Many Scientologists smoke. Smoking is advocated by both Jacob Sullum
and Brooke Oberwetter.

Sullum is an editor of Reason magazine, published by the Reason
Foundation. This foundation is another wolf in sheeps clothing: they
would like you think they are supporters of your rights, but they
printed whatever Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney and Alberto Gonzales
told them to!

Sullum is well funded by the tobacco industry. Sullum published
Berlaus article in Reason before Berlau became toxic. Sullum has
also, through a series of interviews, tried to defend Thomas Szasz and
his support for Scientology.

Brooke Oberwetter is the daughter of Bush-appointed ambassador to
Saudi Arabia James Oberwetter. Like father, like daughter.

Oberwetter is a staunch supporter of smoking.

Oberwetter left CEI to form DC Signal, which has been described as a
telecommunications policy consultancy. Does this mean they tell people
what to put on their outgoing voicemail messages?

A more likely explanation for DC Signals business operations is that
they are engaged in €œspin€� operations to promulgate the policies of
Scientology, Andrew Langer, John Berlau, Myron Ebell, Jacob Sullum,
Monica Pignotti, Larry Sarner, Linda Rosa, Jean Mercer, and Charly D.
Miller.
