Default Many thanks for all the help on diet

I appreciate all the helpful comments everyone has offered re my post
on dietary restrictions. As several of you have recommended, I've
also done some internet searching and have found there's a very
qualified dietician near where I live. That's my next move.

You're a terrific group of people. I'm indebted.

That's exactly what I've been thinking. And I hope they come up
with a diet that makes you happy and keeps you out of dialysis.

Be sure to carefully listen and consider what the dietician tell you and
make your own sensible decision. . Some are very good, some seem to lack
common sense.

My wife has CHF. The doctor has us meet with a dietician. They run group
classes for different problems. We were told that milkshakes were
forbidden. I asked if it was OK to drink milk and she said OK. I asked if
it is OK to have some ice cream and she said OK. I asked again about
milkshakes, and she said no, they are not good for you.

Sausage is not good for her either, but I asked about ground pork. That is
OK.

Good luck and I hope thing work out well in the long run and you find ways
to prepare enjoyable meals with what you can have.

Perhaps she was concerned about portion control? Calorie dense foods?
Did you ask why she felt shakes weren't a good idea but milk and ice
cream was okay?

mass produced and marketed sausages cover a wide gamut and usually
contain much more sodium than homemade sausage or plain ground pork.
Someone with CHF doesn't need all that salt. Perhaps for a group
situation where people vary in their understanding she should have
spelled out what the differences are.

Good luck Dora!

Found some good URL's for low-protein. Try that as a search?

www.gicare.com/diets/low-protein.aspx
That one even has a few recipes. Note the target is low protein so has to
be matched but it does list sodium warnings too since often the 2 needs are
in tandem.

Grin, I know that one!

Rote type there.

This one time though, I'd check the spices out. I seem to recall some
conditions require care with some spices.

Same here! Now, time to finish up here as the picnic develops! Starts at
noon. In another thread, you'll see I have 37 guests. 4 full picnic tables
and 2 child ones in the backyard, and a big long one just for all the food.
Don's got the smoker/grill starting up.

Hi Dora. I'm Lisa, friend of Carol's at the picnic. Borrowing her
computer. She asked me to pass some info. I'm the friend who had kidney
replacement after years of problems. I don't know you but wanted to pass my
good wishes and some cheer.

I don't have sugar problems but have to watch the diet still. It's best you
get with the Doctor then a good nutritionist. You can get some really bad
advice from web posters (not that I see any yet). Be careful of web pages
too. There is a real loozer one with amino acid 'treatment' holistic crap.

Carol's going to pass you her recipe for coleslaw. Since you are not as far
as she knows, on dialysis, it probably is ok. I'm pigging out on it.

Got to go. They are starting the chilli judging!

Oh Dora, Lisa again. The link Carol was looking for is

www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search

That one lets you put in things like protein (25 pages of PDF) where you see
1 cup of apple juice is just .25g protein. Got to run!

That's invaluable. Many thanks to you and Carol. Enjoy the picnic -
may the best dish win!

Hi Dora!

I have to spend a little time inside or I'll look like a lobster for the
next week. In fact, I over did it a bit but not so much as to be a real
problem.

Grin, hubby won't let me out for 15 more mins so Lisa came in to add some
bits. They are pretty much same as I was going to add.

You'll have to do multiple searches on that page but print the 25-28 pages
of PDF for each item you are restricted on. Lisa says it worked best then
to have colored highlighters.

(Lisa here, green is 'good', yellow is 'ok in moderation' pink is 'can have
some, watch portion closely. Print them in alphabetical order and they
pretty much line up).

I add that without knowing how many g protein or mg potassium you are
allowed, you can only tell what is lower or higher, but you can tell that at
least. This type of list, the kitchen at your home can work from if they
want to.

(Dez here, diabetic, watch them sugars gal ok?)
(Tom here, not letting our friend outside no more today. She's relegated to
the kitchen and screened porch. Looking redder than the crabs!)

ggrrrr. Drive by keyboard friends....or was that fiends? Ok, inside but I
gotta go boil more crabs. They are now in *my* bathtub and trying to
escape. Got about 20 left to deal with.

Hi Dora. Picnic now packed up and last of folks trotting off with the
tables, or due to come back tomorrow and collect them. A few talking
fishing epic stories (you know, the sort where a wise wife after her hubby
says he caught a 200 lb goldfish, complains on lack of freezer space).

The last 20 met their fate and there was so much food, we have 10 left as
our portion. Church folks came and carted off lots of excess.

Lisa said she'd remind me to pass you some recipes. Me, I need a nap first
;-)

Good advice.

Dieticians have to walk that fine line between TMI and TLI (Too much
information, Too little information). Was it really a "milkshake" that
she was talking about? Maybe it was a "shake"? This is a food group.
You and I probably figure that milk and ice cream, blended, are a
"milkshake". Most of the population in the US may think that a "shake"
is something that you buy at a fast food place. Who knows what is in
it? For some RDs, anything that hints of a fast food place is BAD. You
and I might go to a fast food place and get some healthy food. Many
people wouldn't. It's just easier to say BAD.
