Default Party tomorrow

We are having a farewell party tomorrow for neighbors who have moved away
after 44 years in that house. We have been here 16 years, and they have
been wonderful neighbors. We will really miss them.

Anyway, menu consists of:

Appetizers:
Pinwheels made with dried tomato wraps-Salmon, hummus, green
chilies, and bacon dip (that is four different kinds, not a mixed mess)

Main meal:
Seasoned brisket (mother in law's recipe, really good)
Oven BBQ brisket (a crowd pleaser)
Baked beans (not like you think, limas, greens, soy, bacon and other
good stuff)
Mediterranean potato salad (a neighbor is bringing it, don't know
what to expect)
Tomato, mozzarella, basil salad (yawn!! another neighbor is bringing
it, and I am thankful)
Cucumber salad (my favorite)
Dinner rolls (Of a size for making a sandwich with the meat or not)
Pie (unknown, as still another neighbor's contribution)
Strawberry Rhubarb cake (?? yet another neighbor's doings, sounds
weird to me)
Fresh strawberries (to put on the cake)

We will offer a selection of wine, beer, margaritas, iced tea,
lemonade, and some sodas.

I am really looking forward to it, and hope it does not get too hot
tomorrow, as our yard does not get shade until about 7PM. We plan to eat at
7PM, after a social hour. It will be fine, and they are predicting hot and
no storms.

Later,

DP

The oil and vinegar dressing I make has some fresh garlic rubbed to a paste
with a bit of salt, along with a small amount of dijon mustard. Aside from
parsley, I usually add thin slivers of shallots, sometimes a few oil cured
olives.

Party was great!! Weather was somewhat cooperative. We had a smattering of
rain and some wind right as we were all sitting down to eat. We weathered
it out, and in 15 minutes it was great. We were getting ready in the
afternoon, and went to put up the side mount umbrella, and the rope broke!!
Had to resring a rope, and it was way hot in the sun. Put us behind
schedule. Had to rush at the end and run through the shower before everyone
arrived. More people than I thought showed up. Everyone left pretty early
(9:30 is) as the crowd is not really young. Everyone left and I looked at
my partner and said, "You know we have four kids watching TV in our
basement". The parents all thought they were over at one of theie houses,
and they were here watching Disney channel. Got them sent home and lots of
clean up. It is all done now and I am off to bed. It was a great evening!!

That's a nice recipe, another one is without onion, like this

- boiled, peeled and sliced potatoes
- garlic, minced
- fresh parsley, finely chopped
- EVO oil
- freshly ground black or white pepper
- wine vinegar
- salt

Oil the dish and sprinkle it with some garlic and parsley, lay the potato
slices and cover with the rest of the ingredients.
Akin to the one who you posted, this too has to be slightly refrigerated.
Since it's so fresh, we typically do this recipe in summer.

I don't actually get around to refrigerating mine. We mix it and eat it
soon after at room temp. I made some last night. The trick, IMO, is
plenty of good olive oil and to dress it a little heavy on salt. The
right amount of wine vinegar, lots of salt, good olive oil.... Delicious!

I make a non mayo potato salad with quartered red potatoes, red onion,
cilantro, cumin, salt, pepper and olive oil. I agree it needs plenty of
salt and good olive oil. I call it Moroccan potato salad - because
that's where I got it from - my in laws - most of whom have a strong
aversion to mayonnaise.

i think any method of making potato salad is improved when you mix the
ingredients with the potatoes when they are still hot. (or at least those
involving oil and vinegar.)

Appetizers were rushed due to the umbrella breaking in the hot sun!!!
Everyone commented how good they were, but they were not really eaten with
gusto.

> Main meal:
> Seasoned brisket (mother in law's recipe, really good)
> Oven BBQ brisket (a crowd pleaser)

Brisket was well recieved, and virtually none left over. It came out very
good and tender.

> Baked beans (not like you think, limas, greens, soy, bacon and
> other good stuff)

This is really good (furnished by a neighbor lady) and the dish was scraped
clean!!

> Mediterranean potato salad (a neighbor is bringing it, don't know
> what to expect)

The potato salad that she raved about was rather normal. A normal potato
salad with radish slices and some other stuff. Not Mediterranian at all.
It was good, but not great.

> Tomato, mozzarella, basil salad (yawn!! another neighbor is
> bringing it, and I am thankful)

This was eaten readily, and I have never cared for this salad! Go figure.

> Cucumber salad (my favorite)

This was good and was well received. The left overs were even better.

> Dinner rolls (Of a size for making a sandwich with the meat or
> not)

Came from the big store, and were okay, but nothing really special.

> Pie (unknown, as still another neighbor's contribution)

Fresh cherry pie and was very good, went over very well if you were lucky
enough to get a piece.

> Strawberry Rhubarb cake (?? yet another neighbor's doings, sounds
> weird to me)

Was kind of odd. It was more like a crumb cake or a cobbler. I do not care
for Rhubarb, so I only took a taste. It did not go over well.

> Fresh strawberries (to put on the cake)

These just got eaten without the cake, and were very good.

> lemonade, and some sodas.

I did not get enough wine, and had too much beer. I actually had to dip
into our private reserve of wines to keep it flowing! Enough beer left over
for us to last all year.

Overall, a great time and good food. Today I returned all of the borrowed
patio furniture and returned the dishes left behind.
