The group poll indicated there were 452 posts. When I downloaded headers,
I only got 129.

That means 323 posts (or more than two thirds) were killfiled. That's
scary, unless Sheldon was on a fercocktah rant, in which case, it's a good
thing ;-)

For those who are interested, my most effective killfile tool is limiting
acceptable posts to those crossposted to only one other group. Three or
more is reason enough for the bozo bin.

So we could be under attack by crossposting trolls and I would never know
it ;-)

Personally, I'm having no luck at all killing the various posts coming

The only time I see the cross posted messages is when someone here
decides to respond to it. I have 2 views set up, and right now the
view of ignored is 1750 messages long. The not ignored is 1853
messages long. I have retention set to 10 days. I use the ignore
function rather than delete so I can check and see what a thread was
about or just how many messages I don't have to look at.

If you could filter out all the off topic crap you'd probably be down to
maybe 40 posts.

Now count how many of those are about food/cooking.

Oh, I don't know. If the posts are cooking related, they can inspire
discussion ‹ there does not have to be 100 on topic posts for that.

I killfile posters rather than threads, so I'm left with the people who
actually post about food most of the time.

ObFood: Made wonderful chiles rellenos yesterday. Best I've ever had, if
I do say so myself, and I do.

But as this is an unmoderated newsgroup, you come here knowing full well
what you're getting yourself into. There is no sense complaining about
thread degeneration (which is where most of the OT stuff comes in) if it
can't be corrected by appeals to "topic".

If this was a moderated newsgroup, it might suit some but I for one would
find it boring. In fact there are whole periods (usually in the spring)
when I have little interest in reading rfc. Not sure why then more than at
any other time, but it may have had something to do with the level of
exhaustion from work which usually ramped up in anticipation of the summer
break. Now that that is no longer an issue, well...we'll see :-)

No, I won't do that, but feel free to give it a go. However, I would only
accept findings you could substiate with actual numbers, not pretend ones.

I suspect that much of what is posted here (beyond spam which I don't see),
is food related...say at least 90% and much more than that if you count
original posted topics. That a thread degenerates as it gets longer is
proof of Godwin's law, nothing else.

What kind of cheese did you use (assuming they had a cheese filling)?

Better add an ObFood, there, George Dear. ;-)

ObFood: About to make crab cakes. Might use panko. Mmmm, crab cakes.

I don't even try to make crab cakes. DW is from Maryland and I lived
there for a couple of years too. Her folks house was 20 feet from a salt
water inlet off the Patuxent River and we caught crabs anywhere along
there in the late fifties. MIL made some mean crab cakes as did every
restaurant around the area.

Tonight we had insalat caprese, our own basil and tomatoes, someone
else's fresh mozzarella. Too hot to eat anything heavy.

Yeah, it's hot here, too, and I was just going to have sandwiches and
salad (may still do so), but then I got it in my head to make crab
cakes, so I'll probably still do that. Made the tartar and cocktail
sauces already.

You've likely done this, but have you tried blocking the entire domain
in stead of individual posters?

What I got myself into 12 years ago was a topical newsgroup about
cooking.

I understand thread drift and I don't think that's where "most of the OT

19 postings in this thread alone (count them). How many are food
related?

Well, let`s take a quick poll, shall we?

Looking at headers to the 85 posts this morning that pass through my
aggressive filters, I count 16 out of 24 that are food related topics. A
few are trolls, a few are spam, there are some that are rfc related without
being strictly on topic such as this one, and the rest are clearly
identifiable as OT. So, given that one has eyes with which to see, what
would compel me to pay any attention whatsoever to the off-topic stuff if
I, as a stand-in for you, say, in this example, was not interested in
reading any of it? Nothing, that's what.

how odd. 40tude dialog handles them. i don't know how thunderbird works,
but maybe somehow you are allowing them later? you might try moving your
kill instruction to the bottom of your list.

And that was oriented to kiddie interests, like Twilight and Hannah
Montana?

I suspect most trolls are not virtual juvies but rather consider themselves
smarter than most posters here. They would fit the profile of a "college"-
educated male with pseudo-anarchist leanings who considers disruption to be
a remedy for what they perceive as a loss of interest in important issues
like war and famine and...well, I'm guessing...

Back in the days when I was a relay op on Bitnet, the trolls who were not
just drunken Electrical Engineering students, were Yale students. They
would join channels and completely disrupt the conversation with rude
comments which they then said were based on free speech (as interpreted by
the US Supreme Court...they actually said that).

When we tried to explain that the channels were international and not every
one had the same interpretation of free speech as the US Supreme Court did,
they became aggressive (as it were). So, basically, their ideas were
juvenile and not properly thought out and they used their ability to create
mischief to express their disapproval of what they perceived as
trivializing of serious issues around the world.

I ordered one on a combination platter a couple of weeks ago and

Heck, all you have to do is block "Gregory Morrow", should be very simple...

And I *never* troll, Michel, I "discuss"...
