The group poll indicated there were 452 posts. When I downloaded headers,
I only got 129. That means 323 posts (or more than two thirds) were killfiled. That's scary, unless Sheldon was on a fercocktah rant, in which case, it's a good thing ;-) For those who are interested, my most effective killfile tool is limiting acceptable posts to those crossposted to only one other group. Three or more is reason enough for the bozo bin. So we could be under attack by crossposting trolls and I would never know it ;-) -- Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone. - John Maynard Keynes |

I have 2 views set up, and right now the view of ignored is 1750 messages long. The not ignored is 1853 messages long. I have retention set to 10 days. I use the ignore function rather than delete so I can check and see what a thread was about or just how many messages I don't have to look at. -- Susan N. But as this is an unmoderated newsgroup, you come here knowing full well what you're getting yourself into. There is no sense complaining about thread degeneration (which is where most of the OT stuff comes in) if it can't be corrected by appeals to "topic". If this was a moderated newsgroup, it might suit some but I for one would find it boring. In fact there are whole periods (usually in the spring) when I have little interest in reading rfc. Not sure why then more than at any other time, but it may have had something to do with the level of exhaustion from work which usually ramped up in anticipation of the summer break. Now that that is no longer an issue, well...we'll see :-) -- Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone. - John Maynard Keynes |

Her folks house was 20 feet from a salt water inlet off the Patuxent River and we caught crabs anywhere along there in the late fifties. MIL made some mean crab cakes as did every restaurant around the area. Tonight we had insalat caprese, our own basil and tomatoes, someone else's fresh mozzarella. Too hot to eat anything heavy. |

Yeah, it's hot here, too, and I was just going to have sandwiches and salad (may still do so), but then I got it in my head to make crab cakes, so I'll probably still do that. Well, let`s take a quick poll, shall we? Looking at headers to the 85 posts this morning that pass through my aggressive filters, I count 16 out of 24 that are food related topics. A few are trolls, a few are spam, there are some that are rfc related without being strictly on topic such as this one, and the rest are clearly identifiable as OT. So, given that one has eyes with which to see, what would compel me to pay any attention whatsoever to the off-topic stuff if I, as a stand-in for you, say, in this example, was not interested in reading any of it? Nothing, that's what. -- Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone. - John Maynard Keynes |

And that was oriented to kiddie interests, like Twilight and Hannah Montana? I suspect most trolls are not virtual juvies but rather consider themselves smarter than most posters here. They would fit the profile of a "college"- educated male with pseudo-anarchist leanings who considers disruption to be a remedy for what they perceive as a loss of interest in important issues like war and famine and...well, I'm guessing... Back in the days when I was a relay op on Bitnet, the trolls who were not just drunken Electrical Engineering students, were Yale students. They would join channels and completely disrupt the conversation with rude comments which they then said were based on free speech (as interpreted by the US Supreme Court...they actually said that). When we tried to explain that the channels were international and not every one had the same interpretation of free speech as the US Supreme Court did, they became aggressive (as it were). So, basically, their ideas were juvenile and not properly thought out and they used their ability to create mischief to express their disapproval of what they perceived as trivializing of serious issues around the world. -- Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone. - John Maynard Keynes |
