Default Dining In to the rescue!

Junior Daughter and I were jonesing for clam-shack fried seafood tonight and
it isn't easy to come by in the Back Bay. Dining In to the rescue! Jasper's
Summer Shack is right up the street and we figured fried stuff would get
here in pretty good shape.

Such a feast! Clam chowder, fried Ipswich clams, skinny fried onion rings,
chilled half lobster on a bed of sea salt, and Boston cream pie. And it all
walked right through my front door!

Anyone else a fan of Dining In?

Felice

I have no idea what Dining In (capitalized) means, but we order in at
twice a week on average. Dinner choices are limited to the
restaurants in my area that deliver. We don't go into a restaurant
and order take out (burritos excepted - but that's a taqueria). More
restaurants in the area will do that rather than deliver.

No kidding! There isn't even pizza delivery here, much less clam chowder

How unlucky for you that the house you inherited from your dead
parents isn't in a a more cosmopolitan location. Maybe your married
boyfriend can bring you some clam chowder next time he sneaks away
from his wife to visit you for a little shack up.

I used to love getting Chinese delivery from Majic Wok years ago when
I lived on Westminster in the STL Central West End. Entree w/fried
rice and 6 crab rangoon for around $11 or so! YUM! I had enough for
leftovers the next day too! The delivery guy knew me as did the owner
cause I used to walk down for their lunch buffet too.

Meals on Wheels isn't the same thing as having restaurant food delivered.
Tomorrow is my birthday but I'm not a senior citizen (yet) I think I'll
marinate and grill a flank steak to celebrate the day.

Oh, it's a remarkable operation. They work with hundreds of local
restaurants to take orders, pick up from the restaurants and deliver the
food to your door in insulated containers. I simply order from their website
and then sit back with a glass of wine and wait for dinner to arrive. The
advantage to me is ordering online from just one "clearing house".

Looks interesting. Aside from fried foods that get soggy in closed
containers, it is nice to be able to get a variety of foods from good
restaurants. Probably never happen here. We just got pizza delivery about
five years ago so I doubt the concepts will be profitable in our town.

Is it safe to assume that "Dining In" is one of those companies that
takes/picks up your orders from various restaurants and delivers the
food to your door? If so, we have something similar over here - but it
is (or was) a company called "Mr. Delivery". Used to use them sometimes
when we lived in the city - but nobody delivers anything out here to
the boonies <g> so we cannot take advantage of it anymore.

I don't think there are many restaurants that deliver whose food is better
than Meals On Wheels

There's nothing preventing you from going to a restaurant of your choice,
I'm positive there are many good ones within a reasonable distance to where
you live. I'm sure all of those who live on your island don't only eat
home... living as close to the sea as you I'm positive there are excellent
seafood restuarants where you can have all the freshest lobster and clam
chower you desire.

It's similar to Waiters On Wheels which is local to me.

Thanks Of course I can go out to eat. There are lots of restaurants
here. Not sure they can make better food than I can, though

Oh, ok I know what you mean now. We have something similar - Waiters
on Wheels. Not every restaurant subscribes to that service, so I've
never used it. What is the minimum order for the restaurant you
ordered from and their delivery service charge?

Nope, other than an occasional pizza it ry to avoid it. I like very
freshly made food and even the very good fish & chip from the shop
about 500 m up the street is not as good delivered ( well actually I
have to pick it up) as it is when I get it in the shop.

Years ago in Memphis there was something similar. Various restaurants would
deliver to your door. I don't think it was called 'Dining In' and it didn't
last.

"Dining In" is a delivery service that act as middleman between
restaurants that *don't* normally deliver and people who want that
specific restaurant's food...delivered!
Where I am, the service is called "2GoBox" and they do the pick up from
the restaurants and deliver it for a service charge of about $9 or so.

In NYC most every restaurant and especially delis will deliver meals from
plain and simple to ultra gourmet with prices to match.... but often they
travel further straight up than accross town. Where I live now no one
delivers, not even pizza, distances are too great... only meals on wheels
delivers.

That will probably never happen, Felice, as we really love it here.
However, if I ever did make a move, it wouldn't be back east, but more
likely Washington state.

Yes, I'm familiar with the concept. As I said, there was a similar service
in Memphis some years ago. I don't recall what they called it. They did
charge somewhere around $9 or $10 to deliver the food from various
restaurants. As I said, it didn't last.

They had a long list of places on their brochure, all different types of
restaurants. I thought it was a great way for college kids to make a
few bucks.

It's painfully obvious you never leave your house/apartment.

The minimum order is $25 and the delivery charge is $6.95 (and there's the
tip for the delivery person) so it's not something I do on my own! But for
two or more it's a good deal.

Out here a service had like an 100 restaurant service, with the
restaurants menus, some items were flagged as, call in advance, like
peeking duck.

no peeking duck!

Chicken Surprise

A couple go for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and order the "Chicken
Surprise". The waiter brings the meal, served in a lidded cast iron
pot.

Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid of the pot rises
slightly and she briefly sees two beady little eyes looking around
before the lid slams back down.

Good grief, did you see that?" she asks her husband.

He hasn't, so she asks him to look in the pot. He reaches for it and
again the lid rises, and he sees two little eyes looking around before
it slams down.

Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains what is
happening,and demands an explanation.

"Please sir," says the waiter, "what you order?" The husband replies,
"Chicken Surprise."

"Ah... so sorry," says the waiter, "I bring you Peeking Duck."
