It's amazing how Hammonds hold up over the years. When I was growing up in
the 1950s we had a Hammond Model C with 2 Leslies. I think it was still
working perfectly when my parents moved from their house in the mid 1990s. I
didn't have room for it or I would have taken it.

Breadbaking is one of those almost hypnotic businesses, like a
dance from some ancient ceremony. It leaves you filled with one of
the world's sweetest smells... there is no chiropractic treatment,
no Yoga exercise, no hour of meditation in a music throbbing

homely ceremony of making bread. M.F.K. Fisher, The Art of Eating

I bet you sincerely regret it. I still regret my selling a premier 60s
stereo system cuz I couldn't move it with me (sniff). If it makes you feel
any better, the vacuum tubes that drive such awesome devices have reached
oil sheik prices. The matched power tubes I used to get for $25 a pair now
cost $500 pair. Time to move on. :|

Yes, there are a couple of things I sincerely regret. Another being a mid-
60s vintage McIntosh preamp and power amplifier coupled with a Thorens
turntable and Ortophon cartridge. And yes, I've seen the prices on those
matched power tubes. :-(

The biggest loss to be, though, was a Mason & Hamlin reproducing 7' grand
piano that I had professionally refinished, and that I personally restored
on the inside, including the complete reproducing mechanism. I foolishly
sold that for an incredibly small amount of money. At the time I had no
idea what it was worth. I sure wish I had it today.

But moving right along, I'm quite happy with my current stereo and piano.

yep. I took $$$ for my JBL Metregon spkrs and Fisher amp, but at least my
daughter got my turntable with the Ortofon cartridge and my 40 yr collection
of vinyl.

Don't we all. Mine was my '87 Strat, Mesa Boogie Mk IIb, and a '66 GTO convertible.

Had a Tandberg deck with one of those Thorens TT's, with the 26 lb
turntable and the aluminum TT top. Eventually the drive wheels
hardened and could not be replaced. One day my Harmon-Karden

I still have my Leak speakers, the ones with the sand-filled
walls. They're still excellent.

Alex, who remembers the ElectroVoice 30" woofer.

Trivia: We have Tweeters and Woofers. What was the term
used for mid-range speakers, the term that never caught on?

:-)

You're fortunate to still have your Leak speakers. Before stereo, in the
early 1950s, my dad had an Altec Lansing Voice of the Theater in his hi-fi
system. When we moved up to stereo, he moved down in speaker size, feeling
that two of these would be too much for his listening room.

Wow, lots of audiophiles here!

I didn't really mean to buy a Hammond organ. Mind you, I've been in
love with the sound of them ever since my dad made me a tape copy of
his Ogden's Nut Gone Flake album to go with my new (mono) cassette
player. The B3 sounds in 'Happiness Stan' were huge and magical.

I have a crappy Yamaha PSR-190 or similar that I plink around on. The
piano patches sound like an 8-bit doorbell recording. Most everything
else is about as bad. So I went looking on Craigslist for a good
'keyboard that's not a toy'. And amongst all the Casio keyboards,
there sat a mint Hammond organ, for a STEAL. I spend 95% of the time
in the "electric organ" or "pipe organ" patches on the Yamaha, and
here was the real thing for less than most of the electronic
keyboards.

I couldn't say no!

Now I've got to learn how to play it.

-J

p.s., I told myself many years ago that I will never sell or give away
a musical instrument once I've acquired it. I've let go of a few
things that I regret. I don't miss the cars as much though.

The history of Altec and John B. Lansing is pretty interesting. The
D-130 15 inch woofer pretty much put JBL on the map. The older ones
in good shape are still worth a lot of money and have a sound nothing
today can come close to because of the 4 inch voice coil and
incredible efficiency. I purchased a set in custom cabinets last year
for 10 bucks. At the time they weren't working and I had no clue what
was actually in them. Turns out the cabinets were custom made in the
early 60's and most likely used in the church I bought them at. I
replaced the crossovers and one tweeter horn with stuff I had in the
basement. I sold them for 500 bucks. They were just too big for our
home. I loved listening to them but at least the guy who bought them
is happy. He drove to Chicago from Dallas for them and some other
things he bought up here.

Here's what the bad boys looked like:

http://i32.tinypic.com/2i0zv9x.jpg

Here's a history of the speaker. You can also poke around the site
and find reference to Altec and lots of other fun stuff.

That's what wuz in my JBL metregon, that and cast 30lb treeters. Monster
system I just couldn't move with. Killed me to sell 'em. Another great
speaker, also no longer around, was ESS. Their passive radiator design gave
them killer bass response.

Harman-Kardon now owns the JBL brand, but will not honor lifetime warranties
on older JBL speakers, as I found out when a design flaw in one of my
tweeters revealed itself after 40 yrs use.

Congrats on that. Decades ago, I used to work with a black lady that
told me she had just bought a B3. She called it her baby. That's some
big baby! She was a lounge singer that, due to circumstances, was forced
to work in the binding area of our in-house printshop. The signs were
immediately apparent that she would not last long at the job.

Lounge singers. God bless 'em. They're so conspicuous when you catch
them out and about in the daylight. They'll try to fit in with normal
sunlit society but that's a tough gig for them it seems. The night life
ain't no good life but it's their life. Now dat's the truth. :-)

Don't miss the HDs. Forty five yrs on a bike is enough. Like another
ex-biker buddy once said, "I don't bounce worth a damn, anymore".

I may pick up a scooter for small trips to town or the post office.
Otherwise, I'd rather have a heated/air conditioned car that keeps the rain
and snow off and I don't have to spend 10 mins donning and doffing leathers,
helmets, gloves, etc, every time I swing a leg over. I'm basically lazy and
that's jes too much work. Besides, my jowls flap in the wind.
