I think it was still working perfectly when my parents moved from their house in the mid 1990s. Another being a mid- 60s vintage McIntosh preamp and power amplifier coupled with a Thorens turntable and Ortophon cartridge. And yes, I've seen the prices on those matched power tubes. :-( The biggest loss to be, though, was a Mason & Hamlin reproducing 7' grand piano that I had professionally refinished, and that I personally restored on the inside, including the complete reproducing mechanism. I foolishly sold that for an incredibly small amount of money. At the time I had no idea what it was worth. I sure wish I had it today. But moving right along, I'm quite happy with my current stereo and piano. -- Wayne Boatwright ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm trying to eat better. Before stereo, in the early 1950s, my dad had an Altec Lansing Voice of the Theater in his hi-fi system. When we moved up to stereo, he moved down in speaker size, feeling that two of these would be too much for his listening room. -- Wayne Boatwright ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Everything I eat has been proved by some doctor or other to be a deadly poison, and everything I don't eat has been proved to be indispensable for life. Wow, lots of audiophiles here!
I didn't really mean to buy a Hammond organ. Mind you, I've been in love with the sound of them ever since my dad made me a tape copy of his Ogden's Nut Gone Flake album to go with my new (mono) cassette player. The B3 sounds in 'Happiness Stan' were huge and magical. I have a crappy Yamaha PSR-190 or similar that I plink around on. The piano patches sound like an 8-bit doorbell recording. Most everything else is about as bad. So I went looking on Craigslist for a good 'keyboard that's not a toy'. And amongst all the Casio keyboards, there sat a mint Hammond organ, for a STEAL. I spend 95% of the time in the "electric organ" or "pipe organ" patches on the Yamaha, and here was the real thing for less than most of the electronic keyboards. I couldn't say no! Now I've got to learn how to play it. ![]() -J p.s., I told myself many years ago that I will never sell or give away a musical instrument once I've acquired it. I've let go of a few things that I regret. I don't miss the cars as much though. |

The D-130 15 inch woofer pretty much put JBL on the map. The older ones in good shape are still worth a lot of money and have a sound nothing today can come close to because of the 4 inch voice coil and incredible efficiency. I purchased a set in custom cabinets last year for 10 bucks. At the time they weren't working and I had no clue what was actually in them. Turns out the cabinets were custom made in the early 60's and most likely used in the church I bought them at. I replaced the crossovers and one tweeter horn with stuff I had in the basement. I sold them for 500 bucks. They were just too big for our home. I loved listening to them but at least the guy who bought them is happy. He drove to Chicago from Dallas for them and some other things he bought up here. Here's what the bad boys looked like: http://i32.tinypic.com/2i0zv9x.jpg Here's a history of the speaker. You can also poke around the site and find reference to Altec and lots of other fun stuff. http://www.audioheritage.org/html/profiles/jbl/d130.htm Lou |

Monster system I just couldn't move with. Killed me to sell 'em. Another great speaker, also no longer around, was ESS. Their passive radiator design gave them killer bass response. Harman-Kardon now owns the JBL brand, but will not honor lifetime warranties on older JBL speakers, as I found out when a design flaw in one of my tweeters revealed itself after 40 yrs use. nb |

That's some big baby! She was a lounge singer that, due to circumstances, was forced to work in the binding area of our in-house printshop. The signs were immediately apparent that she would not last long at the job. Lounge singers. God bless 'em. They're so conspicuous when you catch them out and about in the daylight. They'll try to fit in with normal sunlit society but that's a tough gig for them it seems. The night life ain't no good life but it's their life. Now dat's the truth. :-) |
