Default recipe software

Hi everybody,

Long, long time lurker but seldom post. Just got a new computer with Vista
and I can't seem to get MasterCook software to work smoothly so I've been
researching a replacement. Does anybody have any input? I have 20, 660+
recipes in 50 different cookbooks (I know, I know it's overkill but I just
love to collect recipes) so it's really important that whatever software I
choose can easily import my collections. I purchased MealMaster but I'm not
having much luck with it. Thanks for any help from all you experts out
there.

c:\program files

Sorry you're Vista'd, it hurts, I know. SWMBO and I have 4 currently
running cptrs in the house (WiFi) and my three are all XP, and hers
is Vista. I am *Forever* bailing her out of freezes, infinite search
loops, software that doesn't *quite* work, etc.

OK, that said: I was running MC, and recently upgraded to 8 on
my #1 XP laptop. Hard to control font size. NYC (Now You're Cooking)
was recommended, and it's OK, but the images are picayune
compared to those in MC. Otherwise they both run OK on XP...

The bad news is we gave up on both trying to get them to fly right
in Vista (HP desk cptr, multi-media setup 360 GBHD, high speed
graphics chip, etc.)

Frankly, IMHO you would do better to modify your system into
a dual boot box using something like System Commander, and
load XP as your alternate OS, then load your MC or whatever
in that OS. OR: Give up on Vista and either go back to XP, or
hold on and wait for the newest (and GREATEST) version of
Windows, guaranteed(!) to be the best they've ever
released... better even, then Windows 95 1st edition.

Seriously, I don't know that there IS an answer.

Alex, not being sarcastic.

I'm running MasterCook 9.0 under Vista with no problem.

I have not had to use "Compatibility Mode", but it might help the problems
you're having.

Go to Yahoo! Groups and sign up for MastercookDiscussion.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MastercookDiscussion/

They have a tutorial in their files for just this exact situation. I
think you have to do something with the "administrator" Lots of folks
there are using their Master Cook software on Vista.

I've read here when people say "turn off" whatever it is they
recommended and the poster they were talking to said it worked. I
dunno. I don't have Vista... yet. Hopefully, I'll skip it and go
directly to the next generation. I skipped from 3.11 to XP, so it's
possible.

I remember when people complained about XP, so it's all relative. LOL

I don't use recipe software (too much trouble), but if I did I
wouldn't spend any money on it - I'd use Gourmet Recipe Manager, which
looks just like something you'd pay for.

I keep allrecipes.com as an on-line recipe software.

Benefits:

* Registered users can keep and add recipes to their recipe box
* Recipes are peer-reviewed by you and other members.
* Can be accessed remotely from a webable cell phone, for when you travel
and such.
* Full featured shopping list functionality

Not so Beneficial:

* Can't search by date ("today's" submissions, etc.).
* Recipe submissions are scrutinized by "We get to play God" editors.

Imho,

Andy

I find XP very stable, was a beta tester for Win95 and 2000, they were OK after
we got all the bugs out. I will not go near Vista, two gigs of ram just for the
OS to run properly good god. If you're running Vista upgrade your ram to four
gigs.
If I go anywhere it will be to System 7, from what I've been told by a few who
are building third party app's for it, that it is unbelievably user friendly.

Wonder if Mickysoft has finally learned their lesson, not to put out an OS
prematurely that needs patches to fix bugs for the next two years?

Thanks Janet, but I've read every single thing on that group but none of
their suggestions has corrected ALL the problems.

I'm not using Vista by choice! My computer using XP was 3 years old and it
crashed and burned so I had to buy a new one. Have you shopped for a new
one lately. They all come with Vista even though I am going to get the free
upgrade to 7 when it comes out. This computer has 8 gigs of ram, and a huge
hard drive and works fine except for the MasterCook program.

Actually, you can buy a new one with XP. Told Dell I'd get the XPS laptop if
they put XP on it, after a bit of "O we can't do that Sir Vista is what they
all come with" they finally realized they were going to loose a sale and said
OK. I've got the System 7 beta on the other laptop and it's running fine, I
even have MC 9 on it, no problems. Two desktops with XP, one laptop with XP,
one with system 7, all networked and running fine. Notice I didn't mention
Vista

maybe i'm a fool, because i haven't had too many problems with vista. (but
then i look for apps that will run under it.)

programs?

I've read good things about system 7 too, don't know any more than
that and am not techie enough to be a beta tester of anything.

<laugh!> I sincerely doubt it... but maybe - now that Dell is
offering Linux as an option. I'll probably need a new computer in a
few months and if there is no system 7 available at Dell, I'll take
Linux over Vista.

Even if they do offer sys7, take linux anyway. The belief that linux is too
hard or doesn't have all the goodies of Windows is a myth. If anything, it
has more. Multiple desktop environments, multiple office suites, multiple
interfaces like gui, command line, DIY scripts, etc. It's also more secure.
No malware, adware, spyware, etc. Best of all, it's FREE! No more spending
hundreds of dollars to buy 3rd party software to keep you Windows computer
free of all that malicious software.

Last, but certainly not least: No one controls your computer but YOU! No M$
imposed limitations. No MS permissions. No DRM. No iCrap licensing. No
3rd party software phoning home with info about your computer habits and
activities. With linux, it's YOUR computer, doing what YOU want it to, when
YOU want it to. It's called CONTROL, something Apple and Microsoft figures
is too important to be left to YOU. Screw 'em. Get linux. Get back in
control.

It's especially good with some Wikipedia links that end in a
parenthesis. When those links are plain, some newsreaders won't
recognize that as part of the link, where if you put it in the angle
brackets they will.

Here's a test:

I downloaded it as it looked good also. Installed it, and imported a
couple of 1000 recipe files from the meal-master web site. The
application bombed, and when I submitted a bug report as it bombs when
starting it up after that, the bug report was closed as a "duplicate"
error, with a recommendation of removing the recipe.db file. But there
is no recipe.db file. In XP, with SQL installed, it's sucked into the
"master DB" (not a good thing). Other applications also use it. So to
fix the problem, you'd have to remove SQL Server and re-install, which
may very well break other applications you have installed that required
SQL in the first place...

I'm leaving the bloat in my DB. And deleting the Gtk tool kit needed as
well as the Gourmet recipe manager.

I own both MC and NYC. I prefer NYC because it searches faster. But MC does have a prettier
screen display. Plus if you go for the forever update package with NYC the nutrient data base is
updated every version and their tech support is great.

BTW NYC version 5.85 is up if anyone missed it.

Nope. Just enlargen the database device for the master database.
Then drop the tables which don't belong into system.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions, inputs, etc. I have downloaded
Big Oven and it seems to be okay. I still much prefer MC but between my son
(the computer expert) and I we just can't get MC to print and since I don't
have a computer in my kitchen I really need to be able to print out a recipe
here in the den and take it to the kitchen.

I use Gourmet recipe manager. I've installed it on a windows XP box and

well, both of those worked for me, but 40tude dialog is pretty savvy when
it comes to URLs. i think the harder cases are when there are line breaks.

Thanks Michael.

I have never done DB work with SQL, so I have no clue how to do what you
make sound is so easy to do. If I did, I'd be happy to do it, as I did
like the GRM application. The interface was pretty nice. But once I
imported the MM recipes from the MM site, it brokededit. Uninstalling
both it and the GTK tool kit didn't help. So yes, either edit the
database (I have no skill there), or uninstall/re-install it, which
would break other applications that were already using it.

Just get an SQL - shell.
Connect to the DB via ODBC or directly (ODBC - driver should already
be installed if the M$ - database runs).
Then run a script which should read something like :
"drop table where system.creation_date = <date of installation>
commit"
Look up the table names and fields in the system DB at the M$ site
(support.microsoft.com , AFAIR).
For playing around with databases, look up "database device" at the
M$ site. There you'll find the correct syntax for adding, mounting,
changing and removing DB - devices for M$ - SQL.

HTH.

Cheers,

Michael Kuettner

Then maybe I will try. I just hate when the software does not
want to work with the OS.
