Why some folks reply to the SPAM posts is beyond me. They are here
today and gone tomorrow. Spammers never read any replies to the
original post.

I don't see any SPAM posts. I must have my filters set with the right
words... things like "Nike" "shoes" "Ebay" "Prada" etc.
When you see a spam post just enter a few of the obvious words into your
filter under "subject contains" and it should weed out the worst of it.
At least it does for me.

Are you using news.individual.net? They run cleanfeed to wipe out most
spam at the server.

My news server is individual.net and I do not see any spam. I also use
Postini, so one of them is working. I get zero spam in my email, but my
Postini filter is full of it.

This Usenet, not email.

I also use news.individual.net and also see no spam. The only time I
see cross-posted messages is when someone here decides to reply.

I also see no spam on my roadrunner email account and I have it set
not to filter my mail. But the account I use here catches a lot. But
I must say that in the last couple of months even the yahoo spam as
decreased substantially. I only get about 100 per week now, used to
be 1000 or more in a week.

You might want to think about "shoes". One of the regular posters has
that as part of his name.

But if you're filtering on words in the subject, that won't normally be
a concern.

I took him out one time with "shoes" as the subject, Bryan. It can be
done.

Well, certainly posts of the "Ping XXX" variety could. That's why I
said "normally".

Who?

But won't normally be a problem.

You are correct and I was wrong.

Still, a lot of spammers have "shoes" as part of their name.

Depends. The "professional" spammers are gone in seconds. The few
individuals do read and do reply, but they are the minority.

Sometimes they are not really responding to the spammer but just want the
group to see what they have to say.
Not a good idea, I know.

The reason I started replying to the SPAMS is because I can cut the
length of their Subject lined down to nil, which makes my experience
of looking at rec.food.cooking a LOT better in GoogleGroups.com.

That's all.
