![]() It was interesting that the three finalists were all "TV chefs". On the whole, the show featured much better food than the regular program, but was kind of boring. It lacked any real conflict between the contestants, it was mostly, "You're so great, I love your stuff!!!!" The judging panel was mostly boring, except when sweet Gail Simmons alternated in. It would have been lots lots better if she'd been there all the time. Oseland's only use was that he didn't seem to like Chiarello much, and kind of shafted him on the finals. The independent numberic scoring system for judging added to the snooze factor. At any rate, I was satisfied with the winner. Bayless was pretty consistent throughout the show. I was mainly happy that Chick-A-rello didn't win. I still can't stand him. Brian -- Day 199 of the "no grouchy usenet posts" project |

I mean, I think all the judges didn't like his final dish - with the overcooked seafood but the final judge gave him 4 and a half stars just so that he could win. Or rather "chick a rello" got 3 and half just so that Bayless could win. Tracy (it was fixed I tell ya.) |

Oseland had to give Chiarello an unfair score to get the overall result he wanted. I was pretty surprised about Bayless's high scores after the pummelling the final dish took. I would like to try that mole. Brian -- Day 199 of the "no grouchy usenet posts" project |

I think he's dementedly delicious. ;-) I wanted either Bayless or him to win, so I'm happy. I'd argue about these being "TV chefs." Their stints on TV have come about because they're great chefs and restaurateurs, not the other way around. I don't think Bayless has a regular show any more, and I don't think Chiarello's food network show is making new episodes either. I've never seen Hubert in his own show on TV; don't know if he ever had one. N. |

Yes, it looks like there is another season of "Mexico One Plate at a Time" coming out. Chiarello has stopped making new shows since 2008 to concentrate on his restaurant. Though he's obviously not given up totally on TV given his appearance on "Top Chef Masters." And looking at Hubert Keller's web site it appears that he does have a TV series coming out called "Secrets of a Chef." Though I think up till now he's just appeared as a guest on many other cooking shows instead of having his own TV show.. I do agree though that these gentlemen were all famous for their cooking before they started doing regular TV appearances. Without their ability to work magic in the kitchen they wouldn't have become famous on TV unlike many of the chefs we see on the Food Network now. |

It can be a bit of a challenge at time. I watch "Secrets of a Chef" on the local PBS station. One of his restaurants is Sleek Steakhouse here in St. Louis, and he often does segments from the kitchen there. Brian -- Day 199 of the "no grouchy usenet posts" project |

I think people misunderstood the original comment. I was not suggesting that they were "TV only" cooks, like a Rachel Ray. I was implying that their time doing stand-up cooking shows might have helped them with the challenges. Or perhaps it was coincidental. Chiarello probably wouldn't have made the finals if Anita Lo hadn't just given up when they switched venues on her. Brian -- Day 199 of the "no grouchy usenet posts" project |

I don't think our PBS has ever carried Secrets of a Chef. (Not all PBS stations buy the same programs. For instance, the Iowa one still shows Lawrence Welk once a week. ARRRGGHHHH!) Anyway, that was exactly my point - I think it's a mistake to call these "TV chefs." A TV chef to me would be Big Daddy, the Neelys, Robin Miller, Amy (short-lived) whoever, and Melissa D'Arabian, and the like....rightly or wrongly. Even Rachel Ray - if she's never had a restaurant in which to be a chef -- although she says she's not a chef, she's just a cook. N. |

We'll never know. I wished they could have done a final 4 - I thought that would be really the best thing to do. N. |

But I also know from watching Next Food Network Star, that Food Network is looking for different personalities to create around. They can set up the situation, but the delivery is still within the persona of the 'star.' Sorry if Giada is a favorite of yours and I stepped on your toes. I like Giada and Ina both, it's just a personality trait that I have noticed because I am somewhat guilty of it myself. As, I suspect, are most of the people on this newsgroup. Janet |

I just chalk it up to scripting, probably because I can't imagine anyone being that needy. It's a cooking show, so they talk about food in the party scenes. The producers and directors certainly are not going to show them having a political discussion. >As, I suspect, are most of the people on this newsgroup. I don't think so. Maybe a few, but not *most*. -- I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food. |

He totally deserved his previous two $10k wins. I thought he was great as a mentor too. As much as I enjoy Italian food and Chiarello's cooking show, his attitude during the episode with the assistants put me off. |
