No doubt due to the fact both owners --and their bogus war-- have been
profiled on just about every channel with a food show that exists and
rerun relentlessly for years. Where you been?

So what part is new? They have been doing it forever to play it up for
the tourists to somehow create the idea they have the franchise on
cheesesteaks

Neither place, IMHO, is very good. I don't much care for Cheez Whiz ® on
my food.

When I lived in Philly, we tried both. I would not go back to either of
them. Many corner stores and pizza shops have better. If you live in New
England, try Papa Gino's.

And both suck road kill through straws. May they nuke each other into
bankruptcy. Unfortunately, tourists love both places.

As Ed pointed out, there are several corner stores and pizza joints
that offer far superior cheesesteaks in Philly.

So they aren't the holy grail and it's ok to make cheesesteak
sandwiches the way *I* like them?

Icee straws (with the spoon-bill at the end). You'll appreciate that for
really stirring things up.

I am a born and raised Philadelphian. Ask any Philadelphian where you
can get the best Philly cheesesteak and odds are, the answer won't be
Pat's or Geno's. That being said, I read somewhere that Pat's sells more
cheesesteaks in a typical day then Geno's sells in a week. I can believe
it. Geno's is pretty popular, but there's always a long line at Pat's
waiting for a cheesesteak and whenever any presidential candidate comes
to town, they always make at least one stop at Pat's and no one ever
mentions Genos.

Janet's comment about Cheez Whiz doesn't make sense though. You can
easily get a Philly cheesesteak at either place with American or
provolone cheese simply by asking. I hate Cheez Whiz too and I have
never had a problem ordering a cheesesteak at Geno's or Pat's with
American or provolone.

Which of those two do I like the best, probably Pat's, but I can think
of several places in Philly that have much better cheesesteaks then
either of them does.

Didn't click on the link or read any of the followup posts, but the
steak sandwiches in Allentown Pa at the Brass Rail (if it's still
there), are superior to anything I ever had in philly. They were only
2 bucks, even in the 90s, and very small, but packed. The bread was
great, didn't get in the way, came from a place called Malone's
bakery. I'm from Allentown, so maybe I'm prejudiced, but the Brass
Rail steak sandwiches were the best I've ever had.

possibly due to some of geno's signage:

But now it is more than a culinary landmark thanks to owner Joey Vento
placing a sign in the window saying: "This is America, please order In
English."

no word on whether ron paul made a visit.

Heh, Pat may serve everyone but he's also a cheesesteak nazi.
According to that youtube video, if you hesitate while ordering you
get sent to the back of the line.

So, which is worse... being required to "speak English" by saying
Cheese Whiz, American or Provolone or being sent to the back of the
line for hesitating at the order window?

It's gotta be an East Coast thang but it would promote being ready
BEFORE you get to the counter! It drives me nuts when someone is too
interested in talking the entire time without thinking, "Oh yeah. I'm
here to eat and get back out."

Its very predominant in NYC delis etc and I like it. If you haven't
figured out what sandwich you want etc by the time it is your turn they
simply say "next" and wait on whomever is behind you.

The 'charm' in going to either is not the food ('cause the steaks *really*
suck). It's hanging out there late at night watching the procession of
hookers, pimps, cops, druggies, drunks, kooks and crazies. It's incredibly
entertaining.

Or D'Angelo's (no Papa Gino's around these parts), also owned by the Papa
Gino's Corp.:

Their Number 9® is awesome! Just don't look at the Nutrition Facts. But,
nobody eats cheesesteaks for the health factor!

sf,

I've said it before and I'll say it again, they both SUCK!!!

The tourists go there and leave Philly thinking they've had the best Philly
cheesesteak on the planet just by name, not taste.

Every few years I'd give them a try, hoping there was some prior mistake
and have always left feeling embarrassed for Philadelphia at the crap
quality they both sell.

We don't serve Chicago's famous Italian beef sandwich and they don't dish
out our Philly cheesesteaks either. I'd call it "brotherly love/respect"?
In any case, at least Philly is out of the pizza wars.

Being the broken record I can be, on an early visit to Philadelphia, ex and
I sat at Moriarty's Pub for dinner and I ordered a Philly cheesesteak and
beer. Philly cheesesteak arrived covered in orange goo. Stunned by the
sight of it, I looked across the table at my wife and asked, "what the ****
is this???" She burst out laughing! Whiz! :P

My dear, you go about making cheesesteaks however you please but unless
you're in Philly eating one, it's just a cheesesteak!

Stan,

You're so modest!

I can think of several thousand places!

it was a great idea to hassle your customers by demanding a specific

I suspect that that is not the case, as "interesting" as it may sound to
the unrestrained xenophobe.

I don't think Pat's and Geno's cheesesteaks suck, but they are
definitely not among the best cheesesteaks one can find in Philly.

I have been there countless times and I never saw that happen at Pat's.
