May they nuke each other into bankruptcy. Unfortunately, tourists love both places. As Ed pointed out, there are several corner stores and pizza joints that offer far superior cheesesteaks in Philly. |

Ask any Philadelphian where you can get the best Philly cheesesteak and odds are, the answer won't be Pat's or Geno's. That being said, I read somewhere that Pat's sells more cheesesteaks in a typical day then Geno's sells in a week. I can believe it. Geno's is pretty popular, but there's always a long line at Pat's waiting for a cheesesteak and whenever any presidential candidate comes to town, they always make at least one stop at Pat's and no one ever mentions Genos. Janet's comment about Cheez Whiz doesn't make sense though. You can easily get a Philly cheesesteak at either place with American or provolone cheese simply by asking. I hate Cheez Whiz too and I have never had a problem ordering a cheesesteak at Geno's or Pat's with American or provolone. Which of those two do I like the best, probably Pat's, but I can think of several places in Philly that have much better cheesesteaks then either of them does. |

Didn't click on the link or read any of the followup posts, but the steak sandwiches in Allentown Pa at the Brass Rail (if it's still there), are superior to anything I ever had in philly. They were only 2 bucks, even in the 90s, and very small, but packed. The bread was great, didn't get in the way, came from a place called Malone's bakery. I'm from Allentown, so maybe I'm prejudiced, but the Brass Rail steak sandwiches were the best I've ever had. Tommy Joe |

Heh, Pat may serve everyone but he's also a cheesesteak nazi. According to that youtube video, if you hesitate while ordering you get sent to the back of the line. So, which is worse... being required to "speak English" by saying Cheese Whiz, American or Provolone or being sent to the back of the line for hesitating at the order window? -- I love cooking with wine. It's gotta be an East Coast thang but it would promote being ready BEFORE you get to the counter! It drives me nuts when someone is too interested in talking the entire time without thinking, "Oh yeah. I'm here to eat and get back out." The Ranger |

The tourists go there and leave Philly thinking they've had the best Philly cheesesteak on the planet just by name, not taste. Every few years I'd give them a try, hoping there was some prior mistake and have always left feeling embarrassed for Philadelphia at the crap quality they both sell. We don't serve Chicago's famous Italian beef sandwich and they don't dish out our Philly cheesesteaks either. I'd call it "brotherly love/respect"? In any case, at least Philly is out of the pizza wars. Being the broken record I can be, on an early visit to Philadelphia, ex and I sat at Moriarty's Pub for dinner and I ordered a Philly cheesesteak and beer. Philly cheesesteak arrived covered in orange goo. Stunned by the sight of it, I looked across the table at my wife and asked, "what the **** is this???" She burst out laughing! Whiz! :P My dear, you go about making cheesesteaks however you please but unless you're in Philly eating one, it's just a cheesesteak! ![]() Andy |
