I think I saw someone here thinking they'd like cash for their old
refrigerator.

Maybe you're in luck?

No cash....just a rebate for buying energy efficient appliances.

Darn. I guess it works out as cash if you let them haul away your
old one.

Cool, now's an opportunity to get a few bucks off. You sure got
a lot of mileage from your current ones.

LOL.. yes, good mileage. Oldies but goodies. I believe the old
appliance last longer than the newer ones. But I really can
judge.. because I haven't had new since '76. :-)

Heh. I'll see my electric bill go down after this weekend. We ship
the munchkin off to college, and so the lights in the house (and the
fans, and the computers) will all be off for 8-16 hours a day when
we're at work or sleeping<g>

That's my energy conservation method, and I'm sticking to it!

A new clothes dryer may be in the near future, but we'll see.

When the same thing happened to us, we noticed that we didn't have to buy 2
shopping trolleys of food, and we actually started to save a *heap* of
money in our savings account.

We're going to move interstate before they start breeding, so we don't get
caught in the "grandparent trap".

I see a new dishwasher, a new phone/fax center, a new laptop, a new
freezer, and most likely a new Wii as well in our near future :-)

And there will only ever be *two* people using them!!

Works for me! I signed up for time-of-day electric rates when I
worked and no one was home during the day. 2/3s of my usage
is on off peak hours.

Yeah, I'm set (knock wood), I don't think I'll be taking advantage.
I'm clunker-free.

I did think that, but I didn't say it. Heh.

You'd probably like new features, if nothing else.

I wish they'd offer that here. It'd be really nice to be able to net
produce during peak by putting solar panels up on my due south facing
roof. I still wouldn't break even, but a lot closer, enough to make
it worth it. Missouri is backward in solar energy legislation.

We could put in central air. Hmm?

No details yet - Iowa gets almost $4M. All my appliances they mention
are new .... and my water heater is an energy-saver, but I could
probably use a new one - mine's 12 years old now. They don't last
like they used to. I don't know if that will be one of the "cash"
options or not.

Ooo! I forgot that one. I don't remember how old my water heater
is, it might be a contender. You know they just don't last. To add
insult to injury, they can't just stop making hot water, they have to
make a huge mess. I can't imagine they wouldn't be covered.

It's a no win situation. I had an old GE (sold under several othe brand
names, too) that lasted forever. Still ran when I threw it out (cost me
$10 to dump). I knew at least 4 other people that still had the same
refrigerator in their kitchen as main fridge or in garage as backup. I
had fixed mine several times, replacing minor parts like defrost fan,
defrost timer, etc. Trivial repair for a DIY geek.

I got a near new, but not running, low-end fridge from a friend (again,
GE) with high thermal efficiency. I bypassed thermal controls to
discover main refrigeration system still good. Finally isolated
thermostat as problem. A cheap fix, I thought. Went to much trusted
local parts/repair shop for part. After much chortling from the guys, I
was informed the specific tool required to do the incredibly difficult
repair cost almost more than another new cheapo fridge. Tossed fridge,
at expense of $10. (sigh)
