Kellogg's Newest Froot Loopiness!!!
Kellogg.s is out with a new TV commercial where a little brother and sister preach the benefits of new Froot Loops "Plus Fiber" breakfast cereal, as if kids just aren't getting enough fiber with their sugar at breakfast. Using kids to attract kids into wanting fiber?!? That's a super low-down dirty trick. Their Apple Jacks cereal also has their new "With Fiber" box. Sugar is still the main ingredient. And the "new" three grams of fiber? HA! "Trust your kids health to Kellog's???) Oh, includes trans-fat, BHT and food colorings. Nutrition values in column 1: based on 1 cup froot loops. Column 2 based on with 1/2 cup A & D fat free milk. That's not a child's portion. And a food warning below all that crap declares: CORN USED IN THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS TRACES OF SOY BEANS. Geez... I'll bet if Kelloggs put "FREE SAMPLE OF PEPTO BISMOL INSIDE!" on the box in cartoon letters, kids AND some parents would fall for that too! The BUMS!!!!!! Andy |

[snip] The commercial I like shows kids eating Toaster Strudels for breakfast, the voice-over tells the mom how great it is that the kids are eating breakfast, and you get TWO BONUS BOXTOPS for their school. Then cutaway to the kids coming home in the afternoon to a plate of Pizza Rolls, and again the TWO BONUS BOXTOPS. Are moms really that stupid? Box-top coupons equals nutrition? (Don't gimme that "sexist" crap, the commercial is obviously targeted at females of a certain age. I just call 'em like I see 'em) > The BUMS!!!!!! Indeed. -- Bob |

My latest encounter was with some gelato: "Ingredients: Dulce de leche(*), milk, cream, sugar, eggs, guar gum. Allergy Statement: Contains milk, cream, and eggs. Warning: Processed in a facility that also processes milk and eggs." Why the **** can't people just read the damn *ingredients*! If they can't read that, then they sure as well can't read the other two warnings either. -sw (*) Don't the labels have to be in *English*?!?!? |

I haven't eaten that stuff in decades and it was an eye-opener. The little bits of material that was supposed to be apple treated with sugar was gone. Also gone was the cheerful coating of sugar that held the bits in place. When I was a kid the bottom of the box always held a spoonful of the apple bits that found gravity to be a stronger attraction than the adhesive properties of a frosty sugar coating. Sometimes I'd eat the apple bits - they didn't taste too much like apple, as I recall. Unfortunately, my craving for sugar was not sated by this product that passes for pre-sweetened cereal these days so I also had a bowl of Crunch Berries. The story's the same: less sugar, less sparkle, dull dried out appearance. I was surprised to see the berries were shaped like sea creatures - it was really cute to see little sperm whales swimming in a sea of milk. My favorite cereal when I was a kid was Peanut Butter Crunch. That was the best! I'm pretty sure they've messed that up too. :-( > > Sugar is still the main ingredient. Sis and I would sit on the living room floor in front of the TV watching cartoons, turning slices of white bread into pressed marbles then eat them like they were gourmet treats. ![]() Andy |

Why would they mention corn, then? Almost all processed food contains corn of some sort or another. Are we now required to label food according to religious beliefs, too? -sw |

Dan, My concern was HOW does corn get traces of soy beans. Do they share the same food processing assembly line? They didn't mention the wheat or other flours being affected. Best, Andy |
