Default Cellphone causes Maytag oven to switch on

From Risks Digest 25.77
http://groups.google.com/group/comp....87e6ced18469c#

RFI is usually an annoyance but seldom harmful. Here's an exception.
A UPI article of 18 Aug reports:

Andrei Melnikov said his Maytag Magic Chef stove beeps and turn its
broiler
onto the highest setting if his phone, which he has had for about
three
years, receives an incoming call while within two feet of the
appliance,
WABC-TV, New York, reported Tuesday. ... He said the stove is
currently
unplugged and Maytag has agreed to send a repair crew to get to the
bottom
of the problem.

GSM cell phones are noted for causing audible RFI in other receivers
nearby. Looks like some Maytag ranges are equally vulnerable.

[Also reported by David Hollman and by Kevin Connolly, who added,
``Here
in Ireland the electrical regulations require a wall switch to
isolate the
mains supply to a cooker when not in use. It is good advice to use
it.''

A guy who did some electrical work for me told me he had installed a $1500
dishwasher in a high-end house that had a carpeted kitchen, and had to
remove the carpet and install tile because the static electricity from feet
on the carpet turned the dishwasher on.

I think a carpeted kitchen is a sure sign nobody cooks in that house.
I often wonder what carpeted bathrooms are supposed to convey...
besides mold.

For a while mine conveyed I despise the tile floor I picked out
that was installed by an incompetent.

Now I just don't look at it.

A complete idiot. We bought a house in Syracuse NY years ago that had
that awful indoor/outdoor carpet in the kitchen. When we pulled it up,
prepatory to installing tile, I swear that carpet walked itself out
the door to the rolloff. We actually had to do a light sanding of the
subfloor to get the smell out.

I feel the same way about carpet in bathrooms. Yuk, yuk and bleah!

I feel that way about wall to wall carpeting period.
Area rugs are SO much easier to really keep clean...

but we've run a threat on that already in the past. <g>

My mom's pulmonologist told me that he felt that WTW carpeting was the

Given carte blanche with the decorating in Lin's and my house, I'd opt for
painted concrete floors. It's cool underfoot and it can look gorgeous (and
of course you can always put rugs down, too).

www.concretenetwork.com/concrete/interiorfloors has a nice slideshow of
painted flooring.

My vote for "dumbest idea ever" would be cigarettes.

Actually you just grow up thinking it is normal. I was born in 1939,
both parents, sisters, in-laws, cousins, everyone smoked. FDR smoked,
the local preacher smoked, my teachers all smoked, all movie stars and
celebrities smoked. At age fifteen I started smoking, that would be in
1954, smoked until my second heart attack in 1994. Doctors even told me
that smoking was not good, made my blood thicker so that when the clot
hit me it stuck. Stopped cold-turkey after that attack and haven't even
craved them since. Both my kids smoked after they left home, now they
don't. Wife never smoked and has been in good health all her life
although I attribute that to genetics. Her mother lived to be a wee bit
over 100 years old.

I have one grandkid who smokes and I harp at him every time he is
around. Of course he is also the one who was a druggie from about age
twelve to, I hope, last year. He's now 26 yo and, again I hope, smarter
than he was.

Unfortunately I see lots of young people taking up smoking nowadays too,
mostly in junior and high school. I often wonder how they can even
afford to smoke as cigarettes are closing in on $5.00 a pack around
here. I hear they are $11.00 a pack in NYC. The most I ever paid was
$11.00 a carton and I bought four of those every week, sometimes more.
Yup, smoked four packs a day of king size filter tips every day. Don't
miss them and spend the money on other things now, like nice steaks,
imported fruit, presents for DW, important things. <G>

I don't know, where I live office buildings and homes are largely
carpeted and most of us seem to be breathing fine. Except the
smokers.

For now...

Allergens do not affect everyone, but there are enough of them to keep
the allergists in business, and the drug companies that produce OTC
allergy medications. ;-)

But *most* people don't put cigarettes on the floor.

:-)

"Cool underfoot" might be a good thing where you live in the summer, but
my floors stay cool enough in the summer, and I would just as soon not
have cool floors in the winter.

If you look at the old ads for cigarettes, they were considered a health
aid. They were actually thought to be *good* for you. It wasn't until
about 50 years ago that the US government finally admitted that they
were bad for you. I remember it. My parents both smoked, and up until
then, nobody in authority would admit that it wasn't healthy. Between
the doctor saying that I was allergic to tobacco, and the Surgeon
General of the US finally saying that smoking tobacco was unhealthy, my
parents both quit.

Ask the Indians

I knew one man whose doctor recommended it for his nerves, back in the
early 1950's.

BTW have you ever heard the Bob Newhart monologue about King James VI
& I and Sir Walter Raliegh when Sir W sends a shipload of tobacco
home?

Yeah, things used to be way different. Nobody realized that it was a
health hazard back then. I had lots of relatives in the military.
Cigarettes were US$2.00 a *carton* on the base. That's right, one penny
per coffin nail, twenty cents per pack. Soldiers in basic training got
free cigarettes, courtesy of the tobacco companies. I heard lots of
reliable stories that during forced marches in basic training, there
were "smoke breaks". If you didn't smoke, you didn't get the break.

Ever notice the increase in asthma? Not that it is necessarily
related to carpets but given the off-gassing of new carpets and the
dustmites of older ones they are probably not good for us. They may
even affect more poeple than cigs but I doubt if quite as nastily.

They don't? Well they do well enough on streets to make up for small
mercies.

Underfloor heating . It worked for the Romans and still works for
the Koreans.

Maybe it's causing the increase in peanut allergies, too. Heh.

All I know is all my friend's houses, and my houses, were carpeted.
I'm hearing about this increase in asthma in the past decade or so.
I have area rugs, too, they can't just be washed, either, I don't know
anyone with a machine that large. Beating them on the line might
feel good, but I'm certain that's not ridding them of dust mites/etc.

I just think that smoking and second hand smoke is going to be more
harmful than carpeting. I would be surprised if any doctor would rather
see carpet disappear than cigarettes. After all, upholstered furniture
and beds hold crud on their own, too.

There's a tie between chlorine in swimming pools and asthma. Seems children who spend some
time swiming in chlorinated pools are 10 times more likely to get asthma.

We have about a dozen oriental carpets, real ones, hand woven. I wash
them every three to four years by taking them out on the concrete patio,
using a bucket of Dove dish washing liquid mixed with warm water. I dip
a soft brush in the mix then scrub the carpets, some of them 5X10 feet.
After that I hose them off, turn them over, do the same on the other
side. They then get left in the sun to dry, taken at night and brought
back out the next day if not dry enough.

Used to watch the Iranian rug weavers take new rugs and lay them out in
the nearby stream for the day to wash them, then put them on the road to
dry.

Interesting. I wonder if public pools (being really over-chlorinated
in my experience) are worse, or if the type of chlorine matters.

Every allergist I've ever met would agree.

However, in cold climates unless you have a heated floor, WTW is
practical in winter.

A few years ago I took the WTW out of my family room and replaced it with
hardwood and a couple of area rugs. I'm still amazed at how much dust gets
into the room that now can be cleaned, instead of settling on the carpet and
getting gown into it so even a good vacuum is not going to get it all.
Eventually, other rooms of the house will get the same treatment. You need
at least some area rugs in winter though, the wood floors feel colder.

nylon rugs have been around for half a century.

I kinda like 'em. Cheaper, too. Priced hardwood floors, lately?

Natural fibre carpets like wool produce far less problems than some of
the newer chemical construction floor coverings ( they can emite for years)
Of course a good vacuum with power-head and the regular use slow the
growth of things in the carpet and crevices but that requires a little
house cleaning weekly at least and leaving outside shoes outside

I understand that there is a lot of underfloor hot water heating in this
area (not in my town, though). I also understand that a lot of these
have failed. They are not repairable, and people have to install an
entire forced air heating system to heat their houses.

The military base i worked on had hot water heating for the whole base,
including the gym ( where I worked) 200 ft. from the main plant across a
roadway of four lanes. We never had a problem at 30 below with our heating,
even with all the pounding traffic over top of the pipes, none ever broke or
sprung leaks.

And then we'll still have to run ducting for central air. I'll stick
with wood
floors and forced-air heat. We've got tile (either ceramic or
porcelain--I can't
tell without destroying it) in the bathroom, and it's mighty nippy in
the winter.
(But a couple of rugs take care of that problem.)

I think I shocked several people recently when I voiced a dislike
for carpeting and opined that I'd have to get hardwood floor put
in where the carpeting was. (No, these abodes fell through. I
haven't found the house, but may be close.)

Oh, how interesting. That makes me happy that we haven't had a
pool--or availed ourselves of other people's pools much.

Oh, that's interesting. I wonder whether I could do my silk
oriental rug that way too?

We wear socks inside. :-) The floor is only a shock when one
initially gets up sans socks.
