Cellphone causes Maytag oven to switch on
From Risks Digest 25.77
http://groups.google.com/group/comp....87e6ced18469c# RFI is usually an annoyance but seldom harmful. Here's an exception. A UPI article of 18 Aug reports: Andrei Melnikov said his Maytag Magic Chef stove beeps and turn its broiler onto the highest setting if his phone, which he has had for about three years, receives an incoming call while within two feet of the appliance, WABC-TV, New York, reported Tuesday. ... He said the stove is currently unplugged and Maytag has agreed to send a repair crew to get to the bottom of the problem. GSM cell phones are noted for causing audible RFI in other receivers nearby. Looks like some Maytag ranges are equally vulnerable. [Also reported by David Hollman and by Kevin Connolly, who added, ``Here in Ireland the electrical regulations require a wall switch to isolate the mains supply to a cooker when not in use. It is good advice to use it.'' PGN] |

Actually you just grow up thinking it is normal. I was born in 1939, both parents, sisters, in-laws, cousins, everyone smoked. FDR smoked, the local preacher smoked, my teachers all smoked, all movie stars and celebrities smoked. At age fifteen I started smoking, that would be in 1954, smoked until my second heart attack in 1994. Doctors even told me that smoking was not good, made my blood thicker so that when the clot hit me it stuck. Stopped cold-turkey after that attack and haven't even craved them since. Both my kids smoked after they left home, now they don't. Wife never smoked and has been in good health all her life although I attribute that to genetics. Her mother lived to be a wee bit over 100 years old. I have one grandkid who smokes and I harp at him every time he is around. Of course he is also the one who was a druggie from about age twelve to, I hope, last year. He's now 26 yo and, again I hope, smarter than he was. Unfortunately I see lots of young people taking up smoking nowadays too, mostly in junior and high school. I often wonder how they can even afford to smoke as cigarettes are closing in on $5.00 a pack around here. I hear they are $11.00 a pack in NYC. The most I ever paid was $11.00 a carton and I bought four of those every week, sometimes more. Yup, smoked four packs a day of king size filter tips every day. Don't miss them and spend the money on other things now, like nice steaks, imported fruit, presents for DW, important things. <G> |

If you look at the old ads for cigarettes, they were considered a health aid. They were actually thought to be *good* for you. It wasn't until about 50 years ago that the US government finally admitted that they were bad for you. I remember it. My parents both smoked, and up until then, nobody in authority would admit that it wasn't healthy. Between the doctor saying that I was allergic to tobacco, and the Surgeon General of the US finally saying that smoking tobacco was unhealthy, my parents both quit. -- Dan Abel Petaluma, California USA |

All I know is all my friend's houses, and my houses, were carpeted. I'm hearing about this increase in asthma in the past decade or so. I have area rugs, too, they can't just be washed, either, I don't know anyone with a machine that large. Beating them on the line might feel good, but I'm certain that's not ridding them of dust mites/etc. I just think that smoking and second hand smoke is going to be more harmful than carpeting. I would be surprised if any doctor would rather see carpet disappear than cigarettes. After all, upholstered furniture and beds hold crud on their own, too. nancy |

I wash them every three to four years by taking them out on the concrete patio, using a bucket of Dove dish washing liquid mixed with warm water. I dip a soft brush in the mix then scrub the carpets, some of them 5X10 feet. After that I hose them off, turn them over, do the same on the other side. They then get left in the sun to dry, taken at night and brought back out the next day if not dry enough. Used to watch the Iranian rug weavers take new rugs and lay them out in the nearby stream for the day to wash them, then put them on the road to dry. |

I'm still amazed at how much dust gets into the room that now can be cleaned, instead of settling on the carpet and getting gown into it so even a good vacuum is not going to get it all. Eventually, other rooms of the house will get the same treatment. You need at least some area rugs in winter though, the wood floors feel colder. |

The military base i worked on had hot water heating for the whole base, including the gym ( where I worked) 200 ft. from the main plant across a roadway of four lanes. We never had a problem at 30 below with our heating, even with all the pounding traffic over top of the pipes, none ever broke or sprung leaks. |

We've got tile (either ceramic or porcelain--I can't tell without destroying it) in the bathroom, and it's mighty nippy in the winter. (But a couple of rugs take care of that problem.) I think I shocked several people recently when I voiced a dislike for carpeting and opined that I'd have to get hardwood floor put in where the carpeting was. (No, these abodes fell through.
