After the Irish bacon fiasco, UK's biggest supermarket Tesco
will start labelling all meat products with country of origin.

Under UK law, it's legal to to label a product as "produced
in the UK" even when the meat it contains was imported.
Tesco is going to stop doing this.

And that's a good thing. Here in Italy that became law after the mad cow
scandal, all meat sold in shops has to be labeled with the country of birth,
the country of breeding (can be more than one and usually is coutry of birth
+ country of slaughtering) and country of slaughtering. I don't know what's
been decided about restaurants and fast-foods, altouhgh.

I believe it just made law here as well, after much whining and
lobbying. Fruits, veggies and meats.

Most stores have already been complying with it anyway. Everything
I buy is labeled or is covered by a clearly posted blanket statement
("All meat is otherwise from the U.S."), with exceptions noted on
the labels.

I used to buy a lot of processed & very inexpensive Chinese imported
food products.

The Asian shopping area i live near has big boxes of decent cookies and
lots of rather exotic instant "cup o soup" type products that i could
get very inexpensively that were all manufactured in China.

I don't do that any more. And even though an elderly relative i cook
for has to have a diet that eliminates most all commercial, processed,
pre packaged foods i stopped buying the Chinese food products because
to the recent scandals about the 'tainted' Chinese food products.

Fortunately my soy sauce and a few other "Asian" products i still
purchase are made in the U.S.A.

Im no sineophobe, i have studied Chinese history causes it interests me,
i often cook Chinese recipes, "some of my best friends are Chinese" but
i wont buy Chinese imported manufactured food products imported from
China any more. Tooth paste or cat food either for that matter. Though
given my cats i doubt they would eat it. I have had serious doubts about
the Chinese toilet paper, call me paranoid but last time i bought a big
box i 'bought American" rather than the some what cheaper rolls of
Chinese toilet paper.
