I was wondering what people thought of when someone says "Hot Dog
Relish." Whether they think sweet, green relish as in used in Chicago, or a yellowy mustard as in sold by some brands as hot dog relish. Or a tomatey-relish, as I think I've heard is used by some stands in New York. Maybe it's a regional thing; but when I've searched for recipes for Hot Dog Relish, the recipe variations are all over the map, so I reckon there's no standard definition, just whatever kind of relish you wanna put on, I suppose.. still, wondered what people thought. |

Here in CA, 'hot dog relish' is essentially a mix of pickle relish and yellow mustard. D.M. |

In various parts of the country I've had green "hot dog relish" made from pickled minced cucumbers or peppers, and a more clear version from sweetened, pickled onions with a few small red pepper chunks. All have been very tasty. gloria p |

The stuff I made last week had onion, peppers (sweet bell), a clove of garlic, some bread and butter pickles, a little cinnamon, a little clove, a splash of vinegar simmered briefly in some tomato sauce (want to guess if it was homemade from scratch?) It is very good. (The cinnamon and clove are typically found in chili sauce recipes‹*sort* of what I was aiming for, but a quick cook version.) -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://web.me.com/barbschaller - Yes, I Can! blog - check it out. I use Vlassic sweet relish (cucumber based, no HFCS). I prefer using MY desired mustard. I recently switched from French's yellow to Guldens spicy brown mustard for hot dogs and have been happy with the change. Best, Andy |

I really enjoyed the Heinz hot chili sauce , it came in small bottles kinda like a small ketchup bottle. We can't get it here anymore, I'm guessing I may find it in fargo or GF if I look hard. It was wonderful on hotdogs and hamburgers. |

I see it available online but would bet it's not at the ACME but since I've had mustard "tunnel vision" for so long, I'll browse the mustard shelves a little closer next time. I'd try it as a standalone condiment on a dog. Might be too hot to combine with a mild relish. Or not. Andy |

Stu Sometimes you can find Heinz "English" stuff in the A&A store next to McDonald's on Main at 9th Streets or Hornbachers - especially Osgood. The English stuff has some products not sold or discontinued in the US - Salad Cream, Baked Beans etc. Where are you anyway? Lynn in Fargo |

Thanks everyone. I guess that kinda confirms that I thought. That the
definition of Hot Dog Relish seems to depend a lil on where you are, a lil on what you like and a lil on what you're used to seeing relish makers label their jars. |
