Salt substitute? Why not just omit the salt from your cooking and replace
the salt with more herbs and spices, along with some fresh lemon juice?

What IS salt substitute?

Tim.

If the human brain were simple enough that we could understand it, we would
be so simple that we couldn't.

From the label of NuSalt, which I use since regular salt results in
water retention (ie weight gain!!):

Potassium Choride, Contains less than 1% of cream of tartar, Silicon
Dioxide and Natural Flavor

I wonder what the "natural flavor" would be?
I know potassium chloride is the main alternative
to sodium chloride as a salt substitute, but what
could you add to potassium chloride to make it
more salt-like?

I used to use salt substitute and "lite" salt (50/50
mixture of sodium and potassium chlorides),
until I noticed some odd effects on my heartbeat
were being caused by these products. When I
quit using them, the funny heartbeats went away.

They ain't kidding with the warning on the label
that you should only use these products under the
advice of a physician!

Someone said today that she couldn't use salt substitute because of
potassium sparing ingredients and its interaction with her blood
pressure medication, that it could be very dangerous. Perhaps that's
what you began to feel the effect from.

So basically it's sand

Thanks.

But, I suppose the flavour is there to make it taste more salty, as it's
sodium that makes the salty taste. Replace it with potassium, and you'll
likely end up adding more to make the food taste "right".

================
I have one that is potassium chloride, rather than sodium chloride. Too much
can upset the tummy, mine, anyway.
It can be used to help dehydration, from any cause. a mixture of potassium,
sodium and sugar mimics Gatorade.

That's so bitter I couldn't stand it. I got some called "Cardia"
which is excellent. I use it when I feel guilty about loving salt so
much. If there's a Walgreen's near you that's their distributor.
Otherwise you can order it he 1800-699-3533.
