We got back Wednesday night from the mad dash down the East Coast to
visit family and friends. We also spent two days in Baltimore for business. A few highlights: Takeout from Dinosaur Barbeque in Syracuse. We arrived on Saturday night and the joint was slammed due to an appearance by the Fab Five (a Beatles tribute band), so we took our goodies back to the hotel. I'd been to the Dinosaur before and had their food at Reunion last year, but this was SO's first time. Sunday dinner with the family. We finally got to meet my great niece, age 15 months. She was a little shy at first, but she warmed up after a while. My sister made mass quantities of lasagna. We stopped at Wegman's on the way up from Syracuse and bought ingredients for cucumber salad and fresh mozzarella-stuffed Peppadews. Aunt Mary's Cafe in Oswego, NY. Oswego's economy wasn't exactly humming when we visited two years ago, and the recession has only made things worse. However, Aunt Mary's served good food at a very reasonable price. One lunchtime we got a complete turkey and trimmings dinner for $7.50. Serendipity Cafe in Liberty, NY. We were on our way to Nyack and just happened on this place. When we sat down, the manager said, "You've now entered a classroom." This cafe is run by special needs students under the tutelage of two teachers. They learn the restaurant trade, life skills, and academics. The cafe and the kids have been featured on Emeril Live in the past. The tips go toward funding class trips at the end of the year. Their soup du jour was pastrami soup, which contained the aforementioned meat, white beans, and hominy (?!). Tasty and filling, although not exactly health food or what SO's Bubbe would have made. Kitchen Arts & Letters, NYC. While SO and a friend went to a photography trade show at the Javits Center, I made my pilgrimage to this holy shrine of cookbooks. I bought only three books: Save the Deli, Andrea Nguyen's Asian Dumplings book, and Jim Lahey's bread book. I also stopped by Gourmet Garage and bought a jar of Rao's pasta sauce on sale. It managed to get back to Seattle without breakage or abduction by TSA inspectors. Miss Shirley's Cafe, Baltimore. This was my favorite lunch on the trip. We both had a tasty salad of spinach, roasted beets, pomegranate seeds, and goat cheese. The other benefit of this place was free refills of real brewed, unsweetened, non-tutti frutti iced tea. For this member of a discriminated against minority group (tea drinker in Seattle), it was near heaven. The waitress actually remembered that we wanted unsweetened iced tea, which wasn't always the case when we lived in NC. She got a good tip from me. Blue crab-o-rama in Maryland. It's been a while since we whacked crabs. One night we had whole crabs and a crab cake for dinner at Ocean's Pride in Towson, the next night we had Maryland crab soup at a joint near our hotel called Razorback Grill. The ribs we had at the Razorback paled in comparison to the aforementioned Dinosaur. Cafe Spice in Towson, MD. We were staying out in Towson and found this place on yelp. This was some of the best Indian food we'd had in a long time. The only off note was the overpowering rosewater flavoring on the fennel seeds we grabbed on the way out--bleah! Airline food--WHAT AIRLINE FOOD?!? We got cookies with our beverage on one leg of the trip. The rest of the time we snacked in airports or bought food to eat during the flight. All in all, a good trip that caused weight gain. Weather permitting, I'll get back on the bike this weekend. Cindy -- C.J. Fuller Delete the obvious to email me |
