It's rather an emergency trying to reassemble a lengthy URL to go see
the terribly important sites we send each other to. I mean, who has
the time to waste when we send our confreres to sites that may affect
the culinary future of the entire world. No, we don't have the
precious seconds to waste. What to do then...?

There are a few sites that can take those hundred-character URL's and
make them into small ones.

Oh, look. Here's one now: <http://tinyurl.com/>

It took the first URL below and made it into the second one. No
assembling of bits and pieces necessary.
http://forums.egullet.com/index.php?...0&#entry422130

http://tinyurl.com/tmna

And the coolest thing is that you can put a button on a toolbar in
your browser to make it really easy.

Each is unique and a specific link, so I assume it's forever, at least
in computer years. On their home page, they imply that by talking
about redirecting other pages with tiny URL's.

I put a couple in emails to family members about a year ago and just
clicked them. Worked fine.

Thanks Bob, cool link.

Here's an exercise for you. Type in the tiny URL manually, but at the
end, put in some naughty 4 letter words and see what happens. It's quite
an eye opener to see what they are 'attached' to!!

And no, I didn't sit here doing it, it has been a subject in another ng
:-)

Tinyurl.com, makeashorterlink.com and etc. may, of course, go
away without warning at any time in the future. So it's wise
to include the long version along with the shortened one in any
text that's expected to live into eternity in archives -- such
as usenet posts.

The contemporary reader can click on the short link, and if it
ever becomes useless, the cyberarcheologist will still have the
long one to use.

I don't get it. I added "shit" to the end of Bob URL and I get:

Error: Unable to find site's URL to redirect to.

Or you can just enclose the URL in <>'s. Like so:

<http://forums.egullet.com/index.php?s=c4cb3dd364f666234297d0108adf8894&act=S T&f=2&t=28870&st=990&#entry422130>

All the newsreaders I'm familar with will not break these URL's. Some
newsreaders, though, will mangle them on followups when quoting that
same URL.

Hot damn, thanks!!! :-)
I've been wondering how to do that.

"shit" is not naughty enough. Think below the belt on male and female :-)

Note: I had to add a "/" before the additional 4-letter word. It works!

Just one more good reason to use TinyURL.

Just FYI, NewsXpress can't handle the above URL, which is why I tend
to use Tiny URL. Then again, NewsXpress is outdated and buggy, and I'm
probably the last person in the free world still using it... ;-)

I don't have any sympathy for newsreaders that can't handle URL's
properly and I will not go out of my way to accomodate them. I post
it correctly, what other people do with it afterwards is their own
(and subsequent users) problems.
