Be it fried, roasted, slow-cooked or simply buried in fat, what are
the things that you go to when you "have to"? Not the stuff that's best for you, but the stuff you want. I have a few: 1) Take-out or delivery pizza. It doesn't really matter what brand, but it typically involves either a "black olives and mushrooms" combo or "canadian bacon". The trick is that I heat up a bowl of Paul Newman Marinara spaghetti sauce and dip the pizza slices in it before each bite. 2) BBQ beef sandwiches. I do this all in the slow cooker and put it on hotdog buns. 3) BRC... Sometimes I rinse a can of pinto beans, mix them with a can of refried beans, pour that over rice and top with cheese (sometimes onion too). 4) Chili over Fritos, also known as a "mexican haystack". Fritos, then chili, then diced onion and tomato, then shredded lettuce, and finally cheese. 5) macaroni and cheese with meatballs. Even out of the box, with the meatballs out of the bag, sometimes I gotta have a bowl of meatballs, pasta and cheese. I usually supplement this with spinach from a can. 6) I don't have a name for it, but sometimes I'll put cooked beans over half a tortilla. Dash with a hot sauce (usually cock sauce), sprinkle cheese, nuke and fold or roll. It makes a spicy wheat/bean/ cheese combo that always hits the spot. |

Sweetbreads over toast, Taco Bell crispy tacos, Blue Box mac and cheese, frozen raviolis (heated and served with marinara sauce), sourdough English Muffins toasted and served with butter and Melba's Strawberry Jam, rare rib eye served with fresh shrimp steamed and dunked in lemon/garlic butter. That last combo being my favorite. Also baked potato or white rice served with butter, salt and pepper and nothing else! -- Peace! There's a place not far from here that makes a meatball sub that's heaven on earth. It's a foot long, kick ass creation and the second half is even better after a night in the refrigerator, assuming I don't snack the second half to death before the night is through. |

(It was a "come in out of the snow and have some soup!" food when I was a kid so I have fond memories.) Fish sticks & tater tots. Cheerios straight from the box, as a snack. Jill |

If the weather is cold and nasty, I want scalloped potatoes. And any kind of potatoes in between. Then soups, bean, pea, lentil, chili, vegetable, chowder. Hot crusty bread is high on the list. Spare ribs and kraut. Not sauerkraut. The kraut is about 1/4 store bought sauerkraut, and the rest plain cabbage. The kraut needs to be properly seasoned, with a tad tomato etc. The ribs, first do them in the oven until they are just done; not falling off the bone. Then put them in with the kraut and cook until they are ready to fall off of the bone. Serve with dumplings. Outstanding. If I had a choice between an aged Porterhouse steak and this dish, I'd choose the Porterhouse because it is so expensive and I won't have it every day. However the kraut dish is so tasty, that I'd like it every day, and the enjoyability factor is equal to that of eating a Porterhouse steak (or T-Bone). |

I suppose, looking back, I was a potato fiend. Ya had to bring that up? I could bake a potato all by myself!!! Didn't have the talent to make Mom's famous split pea soup for ages. Best, Andy |
