Default Out of almonds - should I sub walnuts?

I want to make chocolate almond biscotti and not an almond in the
house.
I hate the idea of battling the supermkt crowds just for almonds.
How do you think walnuts would do? Or just skip the nuts?

This is Tuesday. Why would there be supermarket crowds on Tuesday?
Thanksgiving is still two days away.

Walnuts taste nothing like almonds. I wouldn't begin to interchange the
two. Maybe you'd better make a batch of brownies instead

The market was crowded last Sat and also on Mon when I had to go for
other reasons. I think ppl are buying frozen turks and have to let em
thaw.

I'll think about the brownies.....

Yes, the markets are all a zoo now. I'd go for the walnuts or leave 'em
out altogether. But then again I just sent my husband to the commissary
to fight the crowds....I better think of anything I might need quickly
so he can get it all while there. Yesterday's shopping trip was a zoo at
Kroger he said.

Just got back from the Wayne Farmer's Market. While it was crowded it wasn't
horrible. Much like shopping there on a Saturday instead of a Tuesday lunch
crowd.

Got some beautiful butternut squash, some chanterelle mushrooms and an
interesting green 'Romanesco' cauliflower with spiky florets. Anyone ever
see anything like that before?

I think they'd be fine- toast them a little before adding to your
dough...

Update- I took the Nes-walnut plunge. They came out fine. Maybe no
almond-y flavor, but what the heck - I think they'll be decent enough
to take to my out of town hostess. Now I can use some of that clear
wrap I bought last year, thinking it was silver gift wrap, and some
old gold ribbon. (Giftwrap packrat.)

By the way, if anyone knows a better way of rolling those biscotti
logs and then transferring them to the baking sheet, let me know. I
swore a LOT. I think I lost the equivalent of a couple of biscotti on
the counter, dough handler, etc.

They'll be like my Ground Raisin Cookies with not a raisin to be found
in them. Sure. Walnuts are good with chocolate, too.

So the people who start their Thursday meal prep tomorrow won't have to
go to the store tomorrow?

Chill the dough first, then roll on a lightly floured board...

That came up on this group recently. I've never seen one in person, but
I've seen pictures. Here's what I pulled up:

Here's four colors: white, orange, purple and green:

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...om/images/glos
sary/b/broccoflower.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.recipetips.com/glossary-term

You can just Google on "broccoflower" if the above breaks on you.
That's what I did.

Roll them on parchment paper then move the parchment paper?

I watched a few vids of biscotti doin's on youtube. Some recipes had
butter ( not in mine ) and one dude just patted them into a square on
saran after he chilled the dough, another gal
used no eggs, some rolled on floured hard surface, another didn't
really show much log formation.

I was surprised at how some of these cooks scooped flour directly out
of the paper sack, how one incorporated dry into wet, then more dry
forced in. One gal bravely broke her eggs directly into the main
bowl. One pan-toasted this almonds, another baked in oven for a
while.

Next time I'll chill the dough a bit and then not be too particular
about perfect logs.

Use the walnuts. If I'm in that predicament, I'll switch from pecans
to walnuts when I want to make pecan pie. Tastes just as good.

I haven't made biscotti in a long time but I don't remember having a
problem getting the dough to the cookie sheet, so it must have been
chilled first. I always let too much time go between making them that
I do it again, I forget that I had decided it would be better to shape
one log (not two) out of the dough so I could have bigger biscotti in
the end.

Or like my great grandmother's Apfel Kuchen - traditionally made with
dried apricots.

Some of us want to buy vegetables and dairy close to the day we actually
use it. Others might have been busy last week with normal life
activities such as jobs, school, children's activities- none of which
you're personally burdened with. Others meal plans weren't set yet and
they're doing some last minute alterations and shopping. Some have just
found out that more guests are coming than they originally shopped for
(perhaps last week!) and are shopping for additional items.
Don't be so deliberately thick, Jill.

Try peach kuchen - chop peaches to a fairly coarse size. Even the
canned will do.

True, not a surprise, but where I live, people are struggling to just
buy food. Some have no spare cash to shop a week ahead.
One church ran a turkey giveaway and ppl lined up at 4 in the
morning.

There is also the distinct possibility that there are those who waited until
they got paid over the weekend, or their assistance came thru or were
cashing out the 'turkey dinner vouchers' some organizations give out during
the holidays....some are not that fortunate to be able to just go when they
will, but when they can afford to.

Also, thanks so much for pointing out that the Thanksgiving holiday is this
Thursday and that it was on the calendar for the whole year already. What
would we do without you constant correcting us and showing us our obvious
flaws.

I was going to do my shopping today but the holiday travel has started and
it took me two hours to drive home from work today. I was too tired from
that to shop. Tomorrow I'll have to no matter what. *sigh*

Pecans might work well as a substitute? Just guessing. What about
almonds?

You have no idea what I do on a daily basis. You seem to think because I
chose not to be a soccer mom I'm somewhat less than human.

Broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, winter squashes... they all last just fine
in the fridge or in the pantry. Milk freezes well, so does cheese. It's
not like this holiday snuck up on anyone. I saved money to buy the food I'm
going to eat, rather than spending it in trendy restaurants. What did you
do, have your butler thaw the turkey?

And you Jill, have no idea what anyone else here does, so stop patting
yourself on the back or pretending that you're somehow more effective or
efficient because you shopped last week. What the *hell* else did you
have to do??? No spouse, no kids, no job.. I'd say you can probably shop
any time you choose. That doesn't make you any smarter or more
efficient. It just means you think that it does.

What in the world does a restaurant have to do with this discussion???
Try to stay focused here, please.

How often do you host large group dinners again? And you never *ever*
went to the store the week of the dinner?! LOL LOL LOL.. you're killin'
me here!! LOL LOL LOL

I'd rather be thought of as a 'soccer mom' than someone's 'little bit on the
side'.......get off your high horse, toots. I don't know how you can expend
the energy you do to bitch and moan about the rest of us.....the pure air in
that utopian tower which only you are worthy of living in must be a bit
thin.....it's soooo high up.

I think we've done all the shopping for our 2-person TG day dinner,
except for a couple jars of oysters to put in the stuffing.
We took the easy route and got a pre-roasted duck from Magnani.

The slew of dinner guests will be on Sunday, and I've done some
shopping ahead for that, including the aforementioned pork cutlets,
a supply of persimmons (they keep), and some fresh extruded (penne-shaped)
pasta. There is still more shopping to be done on Saturday.

I still need to get milk--and a small onion. I THINK I have the
rest of the things I need. And I'm NOT going to venture out
anywhere near stores the day after. Luckily the deli with the
wonderful turkey sandwiches is not near any stores with big BF sales.

She's unemployed and unemployable and lives a sad, lonely life. For her
sake I hope she inherited a ton of cash or it will be back to food
stamps in no time.

Why are you such a dick? Every post from you is a cut on someone. Are you
in pain? Is it physical or emotional? Either way I'll pray for you that you
find some peace.
