The only reason I don't is the difficulty of getting the books here in a
country valley. Communication is marginal here. As soon as I get into a
town my kid is sending me one.

That is interesting. If it pans out as promised, and with its much broader
functionality, it really could be a 'Kindle Killer'.

Also, I seem to recall some sort of catch to dwnlding kindle books.
Max time limit? ...do not own ebook? ...I forget exactly, but I recall
it was a deal killer for me.

*shrug* I was showing an alternative, not giving a critique of kinder.

I think Amazon backed off on that funky policy, nb; Chris was mentioning
that when he was home a couple weeks ago.
CBS Early Morning Show had a bunch of 'readers', including one which
allowed you to "loan your book" to a friend for 14 days, after which
time it would disappear from their reader (had to be same kind of
reader, IIR.) Interesting idea.

Chris LOVES his Kindle. He's got the big one (Maybe 9x12")

It's bullpucky! If I buy a book, I can do whatever the heck I choose
with it. Sell it, give it as a gift, give to the library, etc.
Fourteen day limit, my ass! As long as they retain ownership rights
to a book, they can kiss mine.

For many books there is (was?) an undocumented number of allowed
downloaded. Folks buy a book thinking they will always have access to
it and at some point they clean out their Kindle to make room for new
books. Then they download some of the old ones over again. At some
point they hit the limit and they can't download it from then on.

It's incentive to learn how to burn books onto a backup CD-ROM. Plus
incentive to read public domain books and books with unlimited licenses.
But it's also incentive to purchase any competitor that makes moving a
book to alternate storage easy instead of clean up by deletion.

Project Gutenburg rules for old books, as LibrVox.org rules for audios
of old books.

Sorry, nb. When you buy a printed book, the publisher/author retains
ownership rights. It's called "copyright". If you buy one copy, have a
million printed, and try to sell them, they'll nail you. Same thing
with an ebook. You might be able to "sell" the copy you bought, but as
soon as you start making copies of it, you can get in trouble.

I see ownership of content...copyright...as distinctly different than
ownership of the property or object...the book. I have no right to do
whatever I wish with the content such as you indicated (making copies and
distributing said copies of the content). But as the owner of the object
(the book), I can dispose of it any way I want to (giving the book to a
neighbor, donating it to a school, burning it, etc.). Once I purchase a
book, it is mine.

The Kindle is the object that is owned. All the Kindle does is to allow
content, which is owned by others, to be downloaded.

There's more than one competitor, but this one is really pricey! Always the
first thing I have to ask is where do I get the books, how and which books?
I don't read a lot of the best selling books, but I do read a lot of quality
literature as well as lots of old books. I want all that in a reasonable
way before buying a reader.

Too bad. At $400 each you ought to sign up for one.

FWIW: I didn't know about that one and was interested enough to look.

I thought it might be interesting to see the future for these things. They
speak of the possibility of unbreakable ones that can roll up like paper.

as i recall there was an ownership issue. you could not lend out or give
away the kindle book once you had read it.

then there was also the Great Snatchback:

Amazon Erases Orwell Books From Kindle
By BRAD STONE
Published: July 17, 2009

In George Orwellˇ¦s ˇ§1984,ˇ¨ government censors erase all traces of news
articles embarrassing to Big Brother by sending them down an incineration
chute called the ˇ§memory hole.ˇ¨

On Friday, it was ˇ§1984ˇ¨ and another Orwell book, ˇ§Animal Farm,ˇ¨ that were
dropped down the memory hole ˇX by Amazon.com.

In a move that angered customers and generated waves of online pique,
Amazon remotely deleted some digital editions of the books from the Kindle
devices of readers who had bought them.
