Only YOU can determine value to yourself

>or are there any better ones out there i am not aware of?

There are many better mixers, in fact most other stand mixers are better, but
the better question is better for what... because no KA mixer can mix more
dough, or anything else than the average resonably healthy person can easily
mix by hand or with a hand mixer. For large batches you pretty much need a
commercial machine, otherwise your hands and a hand mixer will more than
suffice.

Total bullshit. There are a lot of stand mixers not
as good as a Kitchen Aid. Just check the appliance
aisle at WalMart, you'll find plenty.

Yeah, I suppose, but some people don't want to mix
stuff by hand, and there is no consumer handheld mixer that
will hold up to bread dough for very long.

Sure, most any *commercial* stand mixer will be better
than a KA, but very few consumer makes.

Sheldon has some sort of grudge against KA. Not clear
what or why, but he rarely misses an opportunity to
complain about them.

thanks bill-i didnt realize sheldon had a KA grudge but his point about
really needing a stand mixer makes some sense to me-i honestly dont know if
i will use it enough to justify the $

i have a KA hand mixer and it does great - 5yrs old

if i do buy one i will still consider and prob buy KA

I also have a KA hand mixer, performs flawlessly... I have no personal vendetta
against KA... I also have the KA blender, even bought one for my brother last
X-Mas gift, an excellent machine. But I suppose a tangerine hued retro look
5qt stand mixer looks great on the kitchen counter if one is obsessed with
fantisizing that they are a professonal baker.

Kenwood is in the same class, is a better designed machine engineering wise,
and gives more bang for the buck both in power and function, costs less... it's
attachments are also far superiour. KA is popular in the US due to it's
unwavering retro design... but again, unless one is somehow physically impaired
no one needs a teensy two loaf sized stand mixer. I'd also be wary concerning
any motorized machine that touts its performance in watts.. a wattage rating
indicates power *consumed*, NOT power produced.

How do you feel about Bosch? In Winnipeg I can generally only find Bosch
and KA but I never seem to hear anything (good or bad) about Bosch.

How do you feel about pointing me to a website featuring the particular model
of which you're refering.

I was looking at the the 7000 Concept at http://tinyurl.com/vg1c or the MUM
4405, which can be found at http://tinyurl.com/vg1jor . At this time, I
don't think I would need the 700W of the Concept since I haven't started
experimenting with heavy doughs, but neither would I need the extra
accessories that come with the MUM. But who knows what the future holds.
They both come with plastic bowls, so I would probably get the optional
stainless steel ones.

I've not seen any Kenwood aka Delonghi mixers in Winnipeg, yet, but there is
a Bosch store near my house where I have browsed. I have no particular
reason for choosing Bosch over KA, except that I like the way the Bosch
mixers look (I'm a slave to the fashion fairy, even in the kitchen) and I
have not heard as many complaints about them (though I have not heard much
feedback about them at all, really). Too bad they don't come in fancy
colours...

That is certainly a fair question, but only you can
answer that one for yourself.

Nope, only against bullshit pretending to be fact.

I frequently agree with what you say.

Yep, a lot of people like the Kenwood better than the KA, not
everyone, but enough that it's worth looking at. The problem
I had with your earlier post, and you conveniently snipped that
part, was your saying almost any stand mixer was better than a KA.
There are a few consumer grade stand mixers that could be better,
but there are certainly a bunch that aren't. To say otherwise
is bullshit.

What I love most 'bout my Kitchen Aid mixer is that it's so much like the
big-'ol Hobart mixers that my son is learning to use up at the high
school... and the mixers that I used to use to make mega-pizza-dough and
Italian bread when I worked in 'da pizzarias.

Fort Fairfield Jr/Sr High School operates a bakery... using cheap labor
(LOL!)... to market baked goods... everything from breads and muffins to
Pizza and Calzones... Baking, Marketing, Accounting, Business Management,
Human Resourses... the educational rewards/benefits of a program like this
are endless.

http://www.maine.gov/agriculture/new.../feature_6.htm
http://www.state.me.us/communityserv...hpolfdec02.htm
http://www.nado.org/pubs/september2.html

We just had a Parent/Teacher meeting yesterday... where I learned
something... My son loves his baking class/lab... where he and his (Special
Education) classmates are working on sanitation right now (yet will be
learning more 'bout baking later this year). Adam and I have lots of home
baking to work on during this semester so that he can do well in Baking
class next semester.

I decided to volunteer a few hours of my free time with the H.S. Bakery
Lab... just to share some of my experience with the students.

Please do the same for yourself, your children, your community...

Volunteer with 'yer local Home-Economics class to share what 'ya know with
'da yung-wuns...

I love my Kitchen-Aid stand mixer. I think it was $299. However,
here's a word of advice. Get a Kitchen-Aid model that has the little
twist clamps to hold the bowl in. If you get the kind that has the bowl
that twists into the base, when kneading or paddling things like large
batches of cookie dough or even bread dough, you'll find yourself
calling the new governor of California to help you untwist that bowl out
of the base. That mixer keeps twisting it on in there until it's so
tight you really have to hug it and brace yourself against something to
get it out.

I've also heard that in recent years, to reduce costs, Kitchen-Aid has
been using plastic gears in the mechanics of the mixer instead of metal
gears as they used to. I don't know if that's really true or not
because I've never taken mine apart to check. That's just what some guy
told me.

I'm going to get a cheese grater attachment for mine. I hope it's made
out of metal because the crappy plastic ones on the consumer market have
to be replaced every other month because they crack or strip out.

The plastic gear are there to protect the remainder of the transmission should
the user try to mix something that is just too heavy for the mixer, usually a
heavy dough. There are warnings on the manuals that state you should not try
to mix more than a certain amount of dough. Mine says 6 cups of flour, I
think. At the 63% hydration I use that is about 48 ounces of dough, enough for
two loaves.

I understand that this (a plastic gear in the power train) is a common design
feature of most stand mixers, not just KA. It is like a fuse.

Hobart does make a 5qt stand mixer (N50)... but no stand mixer is appropriate
for 12 ounces of anything, unless yer an invalid.

At a list price of $1,890.00 I think I'll stick with my cheapo hand mixer...

I certainly did, I recommended a hand mixer, and ones hands... priceless.

You don't need any pricey puny stand mixer for your occasional box cake.
