There are many better mixers, in fact most other stand mixers are better, but the better question is better for what... because no KA mixer can mix more dough, or anything else than the average resonably healthy person can easily mix by hand or with a hand mixer. For large batches you pretty much need a commercial machine, otherwise your hands and a hand mixer will more than suffice. ---= BOYCOTT FRENCH--GERMAN (belgium) =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- Sheldon ```````````` "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." |

There are a lot of stand mixers not as good as a Kitchen Aid. Just check the appliance aisle at WalMart, you'll find plenty. > the better question is better for what... because no KA mixer can mix more > dough, or anything else than the average resonably healthy person can easily > mix by hand or with a hand mixer. For large batches you pretty much need a Yeah, I suppose, but some people don't want to mix stuff by hand, and there is no consumer handheld mixer that will hold up to bread dough for very long. > commercial machine, otherwise your hands and a hand mixer will more than > suffice. Sure, most any *commercial* stand mixer will be better than a KA, but very few consumer makes. Sheldon has some sort of grudge against KA. Not clear what or why, but he rarely misses an opportunity to complain about them. Bill Ranck Blacksburg, Va. |

I have no personal vendetta against KA... I also have the KA blender, even bought one for my brother last X-Mas gift, an excellent machine. But I suppose a tangerine hued retro look 5qt stand mixer looks great on the kitchen counter if one is obsessed with fantisizing that they are a professonal baker. >if i do buy one i will still consider and prob buy KA Kenwood is in the same class, is a better designed machine engineering wise, and gives more bang for the buck both in power and function, costs less... it's attachments are also far superiour. KA is popular in the US due to it's unwavering retro design... but again, unless one is somehow physically impaired no one needs a teensy two loaf sized stand mixer. I'd also be wary concerning any motorized machine that touts its performance in watts.. a wattage rating indicates power *consumed*, NOT power produced. http://www.kenwood.co.uk/clever/kframes.htm ---= BOYCOTT FRENCH--GERMAN (belgium) =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- Sheldon ```````````` "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." |

At this time, I don't think I would need the 700W of the Concept since I haven't started experimenting with heavy doughs, but neither would I need the extra accessories that come with the MUM. But who knows what the future holds. They both come with plastic bowls, so I would probably get the optional stainless steel ones. I've not seen any Kenwood aka Delonghi mixers in Winnipeg, yet, but there is a Bosch store near my house where I have browsed. I have no particular reason for choosing Bosch over KA, except that I like the way the Bosch mixers look (I'm a slave to the fashion fairy, even in the kitchen) and I have not heard as many complaints about them (though I have not heard much feedback about them at all, really). Too bad they don't come in fancy colours... rona -- ***For e-mail, replace .com with .ca Sorry for the inconvenience!*** |

I frequently agree with what you say. > >if i do buy one i will still consider and prob buy KA > Kenwood is in the same class, is a better designed machine engineering wise, > and gives more bang for the buck both in power and function, costs less... it's Yep, a lot of people like the Kenwood better than the KA, not everyone, but enough that it's worth looking at. The problem I had with your earlier post, and you conveniently snipped that part, was your saying almost any stand mixer was better than a KA. There are a few consumer grade stand mixers that could be better, but there are certainly a bunch that aren't. To say otherwise is bullshit. Bill Ranck Blacksburg, Va. |

I love my Kitchen-Aid stand mixer. I think it was $299. However, here's a word of advice. Get a Kitchen-Aid model that has the little twist clamps to hold the bowl in. If you get the kind that has the bowl that twists into the base, when kneading or paddling things like large batches of cookie dough or even bread dough, you'll find yourself calling the new governor of California to help you untwist that bowl out of the base. That mixer keeps twisting it on in there until it's so tight you really have to hug it and brace yourself against something to get it out. I've also heard that in recent years, to reduce costs, Kitchen-Aid has been using plastic gears in the mechanics of the mixer instead of metal gears as they used to. I don't know if that's really true or not because I've never taken mine apart to check. That's just what some guy told me. I'm going to get a cheese grater attachment for mine. I hope it's made out of metal because the crappy plastic ones on the consumer market have to be replaced every other month because they crack or strip out. Damaeus |

There are warnings on the manuals that state you should not try to mix more than a certain amount of dough. Mine says 6 cups of flour, I think. At the 63% hydration I use that is about 48 ounces of dough, enough for two loaves. I understand that this (a plastic gear in the power train) is a common design feature of most stand mixers, not just KA. It is like a fuse. |
