Default Thanksgiving is Boring - What to do?

It's my least favorite holiday because we are a family of non-talkers. Besides
decorating the Christmas tree or watching TV (or having several cocktails), can
you think of anything that would be entertaining before / during / after
dinner?
Do you have any "fun" traditions?

TIA,
Lee

I suggest board games or non-board ones like charades, but if yours is not a
family of game players, it might feel forced. Last Thanksgiving we had a
rollicking game of Cranium at my in-laws'. We split up the couples and the
expertise so no one would feel left out. There are singing, charades, and
drawing options (something for everyone) and we mixed up the generations for
the teams. I lost the game-winning question when my DH's 83 year-old
grandmother and 12 year-old cousin, my teammates, didn't recognize my
humming of the Beatles' Yesterday.

But what I'm really writing to ask is do you really decorate your Christmas
tree on Thanksgiving?

Depending on the weather, we decorate on Thanksgiving, inside, outside, or
both.

Interesting. Have you always?

I'm envisioning a chicking-or-the-egg question about who was first to start
moving decorating earlier in the calendar: retailers or customers?

Use the fudge recipe from Alice B. Toklas.

Guaranteed to loosen up the crowd.

My family's tradition is the opposite; we'd wait until xmas eve to put up
the tree. I can't imagine putting it up at thanksgiving and still noticing
it in detail by the time xmas comes around.

That's so funny, I had Thanksgiving out in Michigan one year and
was astonished to drive around afterward and see everyone decorating
their Christmas trees, inside and out. Good luck even *buying* a
Christmas tree where I live at that point. Maybe this year as the
holiday is rather later than usual.

Sorry I can't help the original poster, I'm the eat till you can't
eat any more, then eat some more. At that point it's time to see if
you made the right picks in the football pool before heading home.

We're somewhat in between -- I usually decorate during the first week
of December. But we use an artificial tree, so we can do it whenever
we feel like it...

Well, my Thanksgiving just got a little less boring, a sil called,
she's decided to have turkey day. How can I say no, but I really
was thinking I was off the hook this year. Yes, I am a boor, I'm
not big on holidays. Fine.

I got the easy chore, salad and dessert. Usually I bring the turkey
or a ham on holidays. Hmmm. Maybe I'll bring a Heavenly Ham anyway.
Or not.

My family used to be like that, it started to annoy me. It was up to
me to be amusing and tell funny stories, whatever. I'm
not an entertainer by trade, can someone else tell ME a story?
The silent family, only laughed when I spoke up. Finally got all
the brothers married off, now there are plenty of people to fill in
the gaps. Hallelulia.

Christmas eve, why bother at that point? Our tree is up already. We
usually put it up this weekend but Jim has family flying in for the weekend
so we put it up last weekend. I like to have my tree up buy Thanksgiving. I
have to have a artificial
tree which works out great as it gives me more time to enjoy its beauty. I
have been playing Christmas cd already too ;-)
I suggest playing games or renting a good holiday movie .

Cate,

If we're hosting 'the' Thanksgiving meal we (okay, "I") decorate
ours the weekend before - if we're eating at our folks' house,
then we decorate ours on Thanksgiving weekend. We also take ours
down the first weekend and/or a couple of days after January 1st.
They're just too much work to only have them up for a couple of
weeks.

I think it all depends on when you take it down. It does seem a bit silly
if you're one of the people who takes it down the day after Christmas, but
if not, it may not be at all silly. I like to take mine down on Epiphany
(January 6). Usually I put it up about a week before Christmas.

Of course it also depends on whether you have a live tree or a plastic one.
I much prefer live trees, and living in Washington State, that's not a
problem. OTOH, if you lived in Arizona, or much of central Australia, a
live tree isn't very practical. Using the plastic gives you a lot more
flexibility in when the tree goes up and down, along with much less cleanup
and maintenance. A live tree, OTOH, gives you a lot more flexibility in
terms of tree size, shape, and type, as well as giving the house a great
aroma.

Wow! Now *that's* early!

As to the OP, what does your family *like* to do? If they are "non-
talkers", are they then "doers" - people who like to be involved in
activity? If so, perhaps something outdoors would be appropriate. Drive out
to the country for a walk, go skiing, sledding, play football - there are
many possibilities depending on your location and the weather.
If they're neither talkers nor doers, the likelihood is that what they'll
want to do is "zone out". One of the best options for this kind of crowd is
the movie marathon. Rent as many titles as you think you can stand, and
watch 'till everybody falls asleep or goes home.

Yes. I can remember as a child we decorated the tree on the weekend of
Thanksgiving. If we weren't having company, we decorated on TG day. Now
that I am older, it usually works well to decorate on TG day. I don't watch
the football games on TV, nothing much is open, and I don't have much
family, so decorating the tree gives us something to do. By the end of
November, the good weather is running out. I have been known to decorate
outside the week before TG if the weather forecast indicates that weekend
would be better. If I wait until December, there is too much chance for ice
and snow. Don't ask when everything comes down!
