Hear Sid Caesar read the recipe @
http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1513078 Click on Morning edition audio. The Relish Recipe Here, with Susan Stamberg's footnotes, is the recipe she reads on the air every year. Mama Stamberg's Cranberry Relish 2 cups whole raw cranberries, washed 1 small onion 3/4 cup sour cream 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons horseradish from a jar ("red is a bit milder than white") Grind the raw berries and onion together. ("I use an old-fashioned meat grinder," says Stamberg. "I'm sure there's a setting on the food processor that will give you a chunky grind -- not a puree.") Add everything else and mix. Put in a plastic container and freeze. Early Thanksgiving morning, move it from freezer to refrigerator compartment to thaw. ("It should still have some little icy slivers left.") The relish will be thick, creamy, and shocking pink. ("OK, Pepto Bismol pink. It has a tangy taste that cuts through and perks up the turkey and gravy. It's also good on next-day turkey sandwiches, and with roast beef.") Makes 1-1/2 pints |

Has anyone here ever tried this recipe? I see it every year and I'm
intrigued, as I love horseradish, but I'd like to hear a few testimonials. Of course, it can't entirely replace the cranberry sauce from the can. We're a traditional bunch. Tara |

I did. I absolutely love Susan Stamberg, but this did not go over well with
my kids. I thought it was OK, but I was a in a minority of one. Why don't you try it? Buy 2 bags of cranberries, make one the way you usually do, and one with the hoseradish. That's what I did, and lucky thing. The kids would have shot me if that had been the only cranberries on the table. ![]() Pat "Tara" > wrote in message ... > Has anyone here ever tried this recipe? It is tangy & icy-cold, with a bit of a bite & a delicious contrast to all the softer & milder foods we usually have on T-Day. And it really does look like lumpy Pepto. Boron |

Went back to the homemade cranberry orange relish I've made for lo these many years. It's out of the Frugal Gourmet Cooks American. Whatever you think about him, this recipe is still the standard. 2 cups cranberries 1 navel orange, cut up 1 cup sugar Buzz cranberries and orange in food processor. Scrape mixture into bowl; stir in sugar. Refrigerate until mealtime. I made this with Equal one year so my then stepbrother-in-law, who had diabetes, could try it. -- C.J.
