Does anyone know where I can find supplies for feuerzangenbowle
in the boston area? I'm specifically looking for the sugar cone
(zuckerhut) and the fire tong (feuerzange).

Or anywhere I could get this stuff online would be great too...
I've already tried germandeli.com but they're sold out.

Thanks!

I'm not sure what your cone sugar should look like, but it might
be for sale in the Mexican food aisle. They usually have a small
(small fist sized) cone of dark brown sugar.

I dunno, but on Rte. 1/95 North in Saugus, is a wonderful German
sausage maker who carries many German food specialties in his
little storefront. It is called: Karl's Sausage Kitchen, and should be
in the phone book. It is a very special place to visit, whether they
have your item or not, if you are into German sausages and
specialty meats. The smoked meat smell inside the shop is pure
Heaven!

I hope this helps. Give them a phone call and ask them. They
may know of a source for you.

Is there a German deli in Boston? There must be one...
If all else fails, perhaps you could try it with Mexican sugar cones
(piloncillo), although those are brown rather than white.

Or perhaps you could make your own sugar cone, by moistening sugar
somewhat and packing it into a cone-shaped mould.

Thanks! Yes, I did some websearching and found that they do indeed
carry the sugar cones, though I'm not sure yet about the fire tongs.
It seems like a fun store, and worth a visit.

Before I found this, though, I came across a reference to a german
import store in Cleveland, Ohio called Hansa Import Haus. We tried
calling them just on the off chance that they might have this stuff,
and they did! Both the cones and the fire tongs. The person we
talked to was quite a character - he was amazed that we had heard
of his store, and was willing to ship us the stuff we needed. He
also thought we didn't really need to buy the fire tongs - he was
trying to teach us how to make an improvised holder using a wire
hanger!

This whole experience has been kind of enlightening - I used to think
that you could get just about anything you want online if you just
looked hard enough, but this is apparently not true. I think it will
make the experience more rewarding because we put so much work into
it.
