I dropped the rake and it stayed there for the next couple of weeks, untouched. The other sad memory for me was my husband saying that Oswald would never make it to the courthouse. Within seconds, our nine-year-old came running to us, shouting "Oswald's been shot, Oswald's been shot". I will never, ever forget the look of horror on that child's face. Dora |

I recall being in Woodbridge, Virginia, just outside of Quantico where my father was stationed. I woke up from a nap because the phone rang. I toddled out and found my mother, weeping. And she looked at me and said, "Someone shot the President." I didn't know what that meant but I knew it had to be something terrible to make my mother cry. The next thing I recall is seeing the the funeral cortege and Jackie Kennedy in her veil, with her children, and the eternal flame in Arlington National cemetary. Even if we hadn't lived right outside of there, I'm sure it would have made an impression. I was three years old. Jill |

We were out on the playground when JFK was assassinated. Another teacher pulled Mrs. Sullivan aside to tell her the news. The other thing I remember vividly about that weekend was the pre-emption of the Saturday cartoons. Cindy -- C.J. Fuller Return address to the present tense to email me |

I was in senior year of high school. It was break time, and I was smoking a
cigarette at a small mom-and-pop grocery near the school, when we heard the news on the radio. When I got back at school so many students and teachers were crying and hugging each other. It was unbelievable. I had put up Kennedy signs and talked to so many people during the 1960 election, and was so happy when he won. My father took the signs out of our yard every night and I'd get new ones up the following day. We had watched the debates on TV and discussed every aspect of the party platforms. He voted for Nixon, and my Mom voted for JFK; he made her walk the half-mile home from the school where they voted. After Bobby was killed during the 1968 primaries, I lost my passion and belief in our political system. I still vote, but don't really care who wins. I remember one event from when I was a year old. We were at my great-uncle's farm in Virginia; he raised TN Walker's. They put me up on a horse and soon thereafter I fell off. My mother didn't believe I remembered that until I described the exact position in which they were standing and described the (bourbon) rocks glasses they were all holding in their hands. Not something you'd tell to a child. She said, "OMG, you DO remember that!" <G> So I can certainly believe you'd remember something as serious as Hurricane Carla. Jill |

I busted my head open on the windshield of the car and had to get stitches. I remember more details about it than my parents ever talked about. But I'm not sure if I actually remember Carla, or if it is an implanted memory; picked up from the affect it had on everyone around me. I kind of think it is a false memory just because it has no details whatsoever. I don't remember Kennedy at all. Perhaps because we had *just* moved out into the country and probably didn't have a TV yet. Best regards, Bob |

Of all the things to make you lose faith in the political system, why would it be something that has nothing to do with the political system? Why would an assassination, which has nothing to do with voting or how politics works in our country, do this? I was living in Lubbock, Texas with husband and 3 children. That day, my
oldest was at school (1st grade), and the others were playing. I was setting my hair (thank God THOSE days are gone!), and had one side set. The TV was on - just background noise. Then Walter Cronkite made the first announcement. The other side of my hair never got set. Thirty minutes later, my first-grader walked in the door, a little confused. She knew it was too early for school to be out. An hour later my husband, a salesman, walked in the door. My first thought was that the right-wing segregationists had killed him. I was so sure of this that I was shocked when Oswald's background came out. I guess it depended on where you stood politically. I now live in a very conservative area and our newspaper quoted a number of people this morning who said their first thought was communists. There was no way to get away from it that weekend. Remember that most of the country had only the 3 television channels. That was all that was on TV, and all radio stations played mournful, classical music. Finally, on Sunday morning, although we weren't regular churchgoers, we went to church just to get away from the tension. And you know what happened while we were there. |

I too was watching As The World Turns when Walter Cronkite broke in with the
news. I couldn't stop crying for 3 days - it was the saddest time. |
