I apologize for not being able to find a previous thread in which y'all
shared your coffee bean favorites so well. I've just purchased the
Quisinart Grind & Brew coffee maker and I have no idea what beans to
look for, or where to order coffee beans from. I live in the Southern
CA High Desert and have no nearby source from which to purchase, so I
would appreciate references. I do know that I do not care for seasoning
or spice-flavored blends, and the only "coffee past" I have is the
pre-ground Folgers Original Roast.

Thank you for sharing your own what & where to order....

Google is your friend. :-)
With internet access, living in the boonies is no excuse for not
having access to good coffee beans..... ;-)

Hope this helps?

If you like your coffee strong, go African! My favorite
blend has Kenya in it (I'm not sure what else, but if you
want to know I'll ask).

Kenya too is my favorite... but I wouldn't exactly call it a "strong"
blend... More of a medium body I'd say... rich and smooth...

I like Kona myself..... :-d
Most Arabica beans are good too.
I don't care much for Columbian.

Most supermarkets sell a couple of brands of whole-bean coffee in
several varieties. How high *is* that desert? :-)

For mail-order, as another poster wrote, "Google is your friend." I
have ordered and received gifts from this company, which has quite a
selection:

http://www.pacrc.com/index.html

Unfortunately, it gives funny names to some of its offerings, so hard
to tell which is a 'flavored' version (I share your distaste in that
area). I'm pretty sure you could e-mail specific inquiries. They (or
others) might even be able to make up a sampler selection of small
quantities for you to try out.

Thank you all, now I have somewhere to begin. I knew I could Google,
but I had no idea what particular beans to start with for just a rich
and flavorful coffee that only tastes of coffee, and not something else.
Once a month or so, I do enjoy a hazelnut blend, but for everyday I want
my plain, ole - plain, ole - just rich and fresh.

I knew I'd be helped here, and I thank you for taking the time!

I stand corrected. It's strong because I make it strong. I
like coffee thick enough to support my spoon.

Go for French Roast if you are unsure of which bean to
choose.

Exactly. I am totally unsure of what beans to buy. Could someone
please just post or email me directly with a what and where to buy a
very small "starter" bag of beans to begin with? I'd rather not spend
$30 for a pound of beans that may be less than rich and *COFFEE*
tasting, so please help me out with something to try first?

Ok, I've been VERY happy with Gevalia products. They tend to be a tad
bit high, but you do get what you pay for. :-)

How can we possibly know what your tastes are? There is no one best
coffee. They all taste like COFFEE, pretty much. As I mentioned in an
earlier post, most supermarkets carry a brand or 2 of modestly priced
beans (8 O'Clock, Millstone, Starbucks) in several varieties. It's
like saying "what cheese should I buy?" If you have no idea of what
cheese tastes like, there's little point in getting recommendations
for Brie or Gorganzola or Montrachet or Cheddar or Philadelphia brand.
Although *I* don't think coffee covers such a wide range of flavors.
In fact, while whole-bean, grind it yourself coffee is generally
*better* than pre-ground in a can, it's not an entirely different
beverage experience. It's just good coffee.

I have a feeling that no matter what type of bean the poster
uses, it won't taste like coffee because s/he problably
doesn't make it strong enough to taste the coffee flavor.

No way to tell that, any more than guessing what his/her taste in
coffee might be. However, I was never completely happy with my
home-brewed until I started using more coffee. It really made a
difference. As one might suppose. :-)

Thank you all for the comments, from brewing stronger to checking out
the alt.coffee newsgroup. I'd already noticed that more grounds per cup
does lend to a much better flavor, and I learned quite a bit browsing
through all of the posts at a.c with subject titles seeming to be of
interest and/or guidance.

Based on just my simple intelligence, a seemingly great bit of advice is
to buy beans from a possible supplier that operates close by, who also
ships within a day of roasting for expectation of freshness. I also
learned, to help with the fact that I only care to make three to four
cups per day, that freezing the beans in wait of use is recommended.
Posted here in rfc is the company of Moore Coffee, Tea & Spices, which
happen to be located within a few hours of my So. Cal. home (with also
an 800 number I'll be calling on Monday), and I do think I try the
French Roast for a begin.
Thank you all!
