Default Melba Does Manhattan - Day Two

I woke at 7:15 and Margaret served me mango, coffee, and juice. We
putzed around for a while at home and then took a bus or two to Grand
Central Station to check out one of the Christmas Fairs that are about.
We decided that the little shops were too expensive for our tastes and
desires so we then continued our journey to the Bryant Park Holiday
Fair. What fun. No food but many booths, all outdoors. Thankfully it
was a beautiful, crisp and cool and sunny day.

We stopped at the Polish market and deli where I was not allowed to take
pictures last year. This place has real butchers--I watched a guy in
the back of the store stringing up for smoking what appeared to be
boneless pork loins. A huge pile of them. There was a big stack of
ribs. We bought some krakowska, some smoked kielbasa, some kyzona
kapusta, for supper tonight. Margaret has no food here. <cough, choke>

Hmm, sorry if this is a duplicate--not sure the other one made it out.

Then we rendezvoused with Marcel at Second Avenue Deli. Marcel ordered
a humongous turkey and tongue sandwich. Margaret sat down and
immediately ordered a glass of red wine. Lush. She had the Chicken
Fricassee and Kasha Varnishkes; I had a plate of Chicken Soup with
Matzoh Ball, the half sandwich (corned beef on rye) and a potato knish.
Not to mention the cabbage salad, the half sour (eat your heart out,
Steve) pickles, and a pickled green roma tomato. Oh, I forgot the
lovely bread with the schmear of chopped chicken liver. I drank coffee
and a Coke.

Mary, our waitress, offered to pack up our leavings for us but Margaret
told her that the challah was two days old so she didn't want it. I do
not know this woman. Mary brought fresh rolls for us to take home.
And more rugelach.

On our way home we stopped at a small bakery that has received high
marks in the Zagat book. Yummy looking things, and I wanted nothing to
do with any of them. Margaret bought something; it's better if I don't
know what it is.

We're home for the day. She hasn't started drinking yet.

The Grand Matinee (I've been corrected for calling it a Grand Soiree)
commences at High Noon. If I had your cell phone number, we'd call.
Maybe you'll see this from the Daughter Unit's home. Can't wait!
Margaret's fearful that people won't make it and we'll have to eat all
the food we plan to buy this morning. I don't see that as a problem,
myself.

I don't think I will be there... It is a real mess outside here, and
more is scheduled to come down later today. I had been
contemplating trying to take the train up tomorrow, but I don't think
that is going to happen either.

I would say I would have a Bloody Mary in the spirit of the brunch,
but that means I need to go out and get the booze for one. So maybe a
glass of wine instead.

Guess I will have to meet everyone at some other time. I was SO
looking forward to it!

I don't think we got that much so far, but it looks like a few inches
at least, looking out my door.
The drizzle that was coming down this afternoon is supposed to change
over to snow again soon, and the inches are supposed to pile up again.

Supposed to be a mess northwards too.

It took me 4 hours to drive home from Manhattan in the snow today and
unless the weather gets so bad that they declare a state of emergency
& order vehicles off the road, I am going to be there tomorrow.

My Expedition behaved beautifully and while others around me spun out
like Alice's tea cups at Disney, I, stayed on the straight & narrow,
with nary a wiggle. Of course, I couldn't get to or through the
Lincoln Tunnel & had to schlep up the West Side Highway to the GW
Bridge, but my bladder needed the exercise.

I gotta go bake a cake. The ice creams are done & curing in the
freezer...coffee & butter brickle.

Can you post the recipe for butter brickle ice cream? That is one of
my all time favorites from my childhood.

Su

Brown Sugar Ice Cream
1 cup milk
1 scant packed cup brown sugar
4 egg yolks
3 cups heavy cream
1 to 1-1/2 cups broken up Poppycock-"Just the Nuts" candy

Heat the cream. milk and sugar in a heavy-bottomed saucepan, stirring
occasionally until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is hot.
place the egg yolks in a bowl and whisk briefly. Still whisking,
slowly pour in about 1 cup of the hot liquid. When the mixture is
blended, slowly pour it into the liquid in the saucepan, whisking
constantly. Cook over heat, stirring constantly until the mixture
thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon, about 8 minutes. Be
sure not let the mixture boil at any time or will curdle. strain into
a clean bowl and cool thoroughly.
Pour the mixture into the bowl of the machine and freeze, adding the
broken "Just the Nuts" about 10 minutes into the freeze.
Makes 5 cups.

Hmmm? What's with all the mangoes? Is Margaret on
a mango binge? We didn't get any mangoes last year. :-(

What's krakowska? I know the other stuff.

Oy. I'm dying for a potato knish. We used to get good
ones here at one of our gourmet grocery stores. They
got them homemade by a little old man. Said little old
man either died or retired and now there's nowhere to get
a decent potato knish. :-P

What? You would put up with 2-day old challah? Feh.

You mean she hasn't started her *afternoon* drinking yet.
She did have that glass of wine earlier.

Your second day on your visit sounds even better than the first day! In my humble
opinion, a trip to NYC without eating at the 2nd Avenue Deli is like pizza without
the dough. The last time I ate lunch at the 2nd Avenue Deli (in October), I ordered
the half sandwhich and matzo ball soup deal too. My sandwhich was brisket. I ate a
small amount of the complementary health salad and a half sour pickle or two. I also
ordered the kasha varniskas. Awesome!

Barb, if you get a chance, stop by Jacques Torres' chocolate shop in Brooklyn
Heights. I know its a bit of a haul to get there via public transit, but its worth
the trip for anyone who likes fine chocolate.
