Celebrity Kitchens?
Hello Group!!
I was wondering if anyone's ever heard of the kitchen designer Stephen Rabinowitz?? I was looking on eBay for something to give my husband who is a chef and wants to get our home kitchen redone. He always talks about how kitchens are poorly designed and how you can't just have Home Depot design your kitchen on a computer and expect to get a well thought-out design.... It's here on this , but I am skeptical to bid. Although at $300 for hand-drafted design, it seems like I shoud jump on it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=23646430 64 That designer evidently designed one of Frank Sinatra's kitchens and gives speeches about "ill conceived kitchen designs." It looks like he will design one person's kitchen in a while as he is in his 60s now (he studied Frank Lloyd Wright and Aero Saarinan in the 1950s and onward at Yale I think) and has attained a level of success. I can't afford the buy it now price, so I am thinking if i jump on it I may get it at the opening bid. Any thoughts?? |

When I get a decent job (i.e. paying more than $19,000 a year which is
what I make in the military) and can buy a house, my kitchen will be done like a commercial kitchen -- commercial stove, stainless steel everything, etc. -- John Gaughan http://www.johngaughan.net/ |

Not really... stainless steel is a bitch to keep looking clean, streak free, and fingerprint free... stainless steel is unforgiving, every speck shows like 10X actual size. I suppose though for someone who doesn't cook much, if at all, and can afford a cleaning servant, then the commercial kitchen look can make one appear the culinary maven - not - um, while you're at it don't skimp on strewing the All-Crap cookware about. Can always tell the food frauds, they somehow think professional cooks do janitorial duty. ---= BOYCOTT FRENCH--GERMAN (belgium) =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- Sheldon ```````````` "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." |

I want all stainless because it functions well, is very durable, and simple. As long as it is "clean enough" I am happy. It does not need to be polished. -- John Gaughan http://www.johngaughan.net/ |

I do have a work table in my kitchen where I do almost all of my food prep so the counters don't get all that much of a work out. The toughest work cleaning is just right around the sink and stove of course. -Mike |

I was chatting online with someone who spent $95,000 getting a single Rabinowitz-designed kitchen and medium-sized bath. She was describing the kitchen part as a work of modern art, though understated just as she wanted. She said that working in her kitchen is like nothing she could have experienced before. She obviously is wealthy -- she has a full-size Sub Zero refrigerator next to an equal size Sub Z freezer, granite countertops, etc. She had him design the cabinetry for Poggenpohl brand, which used to be German but I think, although technically German, is owed by a Scandinavian company now. She sought out having Rabinowitz design her kitchen although she lives in Connecticut for three reasons, which are amazing to me: 1) she said he is known to make kithens with incredibly functional designs tailored ad nauseum to your every need, 2) she said having a kitchen designed by him because he is well-known, especially if you get high-quality cabinetry, appliances, and countertops increases the value of your house tremendously so you get your money back and then some and 3) because you have to deal with some inexperienced idiot if you go to the big home stores like Lowe's who have someone design your kitchen like a video game on a computer. I don't know about the last point, but I can see how there would be a difference I guess between a well known artist and a kitchen salesman, similar to a Rolls Royce and a go-kart. Both will eventually get your to your destination, but one is more comfortable. But, I don't know.... |

Ever see MTV Cribs? Just about everyone featured on that show has a kitchen like you've described and they've got a freezer containing a few Hot Pockets and a refrigerator filled with Bud and Champagne. In reality, how difficult is it to figure out what it takes to have a kitchen that is functional for cooking? Pretty may be another thing. I bought a house a little over a year ago that for better or worse was in the middle of a "renovation" by the previous owner. What this meant to me was that I had a blank slate. The kitchen was just about an empty room, no cabinets, counters or appliances. I got to put it together from the ground up. I went to some high-end design places and talked to them, but I came to the realization that I knew a lot more than they did when it came to the way I cooked. I came very close to putting together the entire kitchen with restaurant supply stuff. I was going to forego cabinets and use nothing but work tables with shelves below. One thing I did get out of talking to designers is that I should give some consideration to resale value. I don't think most people would be too thrilled with a kitchen with no cabinets. I ended up with kind of a hybrid. I put in bottom cabinets, but above I used restaurant supply SS shelving. People who come to visit tell me they like the way it looks, but they may just be being polite. Looking back at it now a year later there are a few things I'd do differently, but not many. I'd rather cook in my kitchen than just about any other I've seen, but then again I know where everything is. -Mike |
