To me, modern Vernor's tastes like, well, generic ginger ale. If I want kick, I usually grab either Natural Brew Outrageous Ginger Ale or Blenheim Hot Ginger Ale. I prefer the latter, but the former is much easier to find (strangely, for a while my source for Blenheim was Restoration Hardware, of all places). -- Richard W Kaszeta http://www.kaszeta.org/rich |

Reed's Extra Ginger is made from Jamaican ginger as well, but I don't find it as peppy as Natural Brew. -- Richard W Kaszeta http://www.kaszeta.org/rich |

I see it in better groceries. Reed's is widely available, at least out here. I think they all started from a Jamaican recipe. blacksalt who mostly drinks them for tummyache. |

We were in NYC a couple of weekends ago (for Margaret Suran's brunch, among other things) and the DH went to a convenience store near our Manhattan hotel and...no 7 Up. It has quite a different flavor. Jamaican ginger beers are another thing altogether and are nothing like either our regular ginger ale or Vernor's. Oops, I should've finished that post... I also meant to mention some of the ginger beers: Reed's also makes one, although it's fairly mild. It's a much different taste, although I do enjoy a ginger beer on occasion as well. D+G Ginger Beer is a lot more potent. Most of them I've had were kind of lemony, and had a bit of something bitter in them too, Gentian perhaps? -- Richard W Kaszeta http://www.kaszeta.org/rich |
