It was wonderful. I am pooped. I am home. Margaret is generous to a
fault. I asked to keep the Magic Card she bought for me that was my bus ticket for a week. Oh, the places it's been. I told you about the cab thing at Zabar's? Today I arrived at LaGuardia with 2-1/2 hours to spare, went to my gate and discovered a flight to MSP departing in 20 minutes. They put me on it. It was one-third full. I had a row to myself. I managed to get the 50# bag in the overhead. It contained these things from Zabar's and Mme. Suran's: Halvah, Russian Coffee Cake, Black and White Cookies. Cream Herring. Two containers of Chopped Chicken Liver. Those olives. Trois Petits Cochons Dry Sausage. A six pack of Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray stuff. (What the hell was I thinking? Steve, I told Margaret you'd have your stuff tomorrow. ) A box of imported Belgian Chocolates (the kind you must refrigerate). (Nyaah, nyaah.) Chocolate rugelach. Saint Andre Triple Cream Cheese from Fairway (not as good as the stuff Mimi served me on Sunday). My sun-dried tomatoes from Zabar's. What did I forget, Margaret? Rob's going to love the sausage! My car driver offered me a free book on the Second Coming. It's not often that one gets offered religion from a hired driver, I think. I must have looked depraved. I left some clothes to be mailed; there was no room in my two bags, one of which was a big sucker that Margaret produced. The schmatteh undies were schmattehed. "Hmm, I wonder what's in this bag. . . . Eeeew! Schmatteh!" It took us about twice as long to get home tonight (weather was crappy) from the airport. Had I taken my scheduled flight, I'd still be on the road. Rob is sick. I made him some Thai packaged Hot Sour Soup (and threw in a few extra cruhed chili seeds) and sent him to bed. Margaret rocks. She drinks a lot, but that's part of her charm. "-) Margaret, I drank one TaB and two cans of Bloody Mary Mix on the plane. The rugelach were in my bag in the overhead three rows up. Couldn't get to them. Just as well. "Goodnight, Gracie." I'm going to look at my digital pictures now. Haven't done that yet. -Barb -- -Barb <www.jamlady.eboard.com> "If you're ever in a jam, here I am." |

I did something similar with socks on a socks-mandatory trip -- bought a cheap 6-pack at Woolworth's (this was some time ago) and just wore and tossed. IMHO, people tend to overpack. Someone I Know generally drags 3 large pieces of luggage around for a long weekend, so as to have the 'correct' outfit for any possibility. Incl. shoes. I'm due in Chicago at the beginning of March, then am probably leaving at the end of March. I'm hoping for a stopover in the Portland area for at least a few days or maybe a week. It would probably be better to fly to Seattle, rent a car, and drive down to Portland and stopover to see you on the way down (or way up?). WA state will let me drive a WA-plate car with a Canadian driver's licence, but OR won't. Oh the bureaucracy of it all! We don't have Vernor's in Winnipeg. We do have Canada Dry and Schwepp's--it's ginger ale, right? Ginger ale is one of my mother's cure-alls, along with bananas. Are you feeling sick? Have some ginger ale/bananas. Once when I was throwing up everything including water, she offered me sardines after I had turned down ginger ale and bananas. I like celery, but for some reason celery flavoured soft drinks seem a bit odd to me. It sounds like it would be good mixed with tomato juice, but I don't like tomato juice, either :-). > > Its enough to make me reconsider motherhood, but baby just started > walking around the room in my Dr. Scholls about 10 minutes ago, and it > is darned cute. > blacksalt Any more pictures? Maybe I should do that my next trip with regular clothes, except donate them to the Salvation Army or something. Oh yeah.. did that quite a few times over there after big shopping trips in Prague. Wonderful crystal. Did you ever go into the old Russian Department store there? Great stuff! Wow! Wish I'd thought of that! Vernor's is so totally unlike other "regular" ginger ales that I hardly think of it as ginger ale at all - just Vernor's. I can't drink it all the time but every once in a while I get a craving for it. A little goes a long way. Think of a lemon-lime drink (like 7-Up or Sierra Mist) without the intense sweetness and with a light celery undertone instead of citrus. It's sweet enough that I wouldn't think of mixing it with tomato juice (and _I_ like tomato juice!). Cel-Ray _is_ an acquired taste, which is why I think it's so hard to find out here (it's not hard to find other Dr. Brown's flavors, but Cel-Ray is darn near impossible). But I find it refreshing -- and different. If you ever come out again to Barb's and my neck of the woods, a can of Cel-Ray will have your name on it so you can try it. I don't think you'll have a problem driving here with a Canadian driver's license. Based on the behavior I see on the roads, they'll let anyone drive here. :-p sd |

It doesn't seem to have the *bite* that it used to years ago... I remember a few years back when I was dating my DH, Dad (my FIL) asked if I'd like something to drink... he gave a few choices and Vernor's was in the midst of them... "Vernor's please!!", I said. Although he was quite glad that there was another Vernor's fan in the family... he was a little disappointed that I wasn't trying it for the first time. <G> People are fun to watch when they try the big "V" for the first time. -- Cyndi <Remove a "b" to reply> |

Travelin' with underwear....if one must! Use the most diaphanous
fabrics in bras, and bikini panties. Wash them at night while you shower, and they will be dry by morning; or use your hair dryer to do a quick dry. That way you only need a few sets that can be tucked in your shoes when you are packing. I sure miss the village as I knew it years ago! Have fun! Just a Jeanie |

I'm definitely going back one day (I just can't stop thinking of Al's!) but I wouldn't want to deprive you of a can of Cel-Ray! You might feel bad about wasting a can if I don't like it, and then I'll feel bad! She took one sip, decided she didn't like it, and poured it down the sink! I was crushed! Dr.Brown's Cel-Ray in a can tastes nothing like the original bottled version... and the recent bottled rendition, of about 20 years or so, is not nearly so go as teh original, but the canned version sucks. A few weeks ago I was back on Lung Guyland, Smithtown... for luch ordered a hot corned beef/rye at Ben's Kosher Deli, with a kasha k'nish, and a Cel-Ray. The waitress brought me a friggin' can... I had never seen canned Cel-Ray, but what the hey, I'll try it. Gack, it's was awful... first thing I noticed was the color is not nearly the same, too dark. And it was flat, hardly any carbonation. But mostly it was the taste, which was nothing like the *bright crisp* celery flavor I had known all my life. I will never again order canned Cel-Ray. The corned beef was wonderful, as was the k'nish. The sour tomatoes and half sour pickles were can't-stop-eating good... the cole slaw was so-so. I'll definitely go to Ben's again, but next time I'll order a long neck Ballantine ale. At least I got the zoftig waitress with Double D cleavage. ---= BOYCOTT FRENCH--GERMAN (belgium) =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- Sheldon ```````````` "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." |

I was poking at the driving habits of all too many Minnesotans (no offense, Barb or Rob -- I've never seen you drive). I think it's easier to drive in New York or Boston or LA than here. The first time I was in the twin cities visiting the former poster named Damsel, we were sitting at a light and it changed to green. Horns started blowing and several cars ignored the red light. Damsel told me about Minnesota drivers. <GASP!> It seems they can't see the stop lights because they're in a rush to get home to make a hot dish for supper. The ironic part is when Dams and Crash were here, we took a cab in downtown Chicago. They were scared shitless. I was LMAO. The driver was more aggressive than most, but we were safer than driving in the twin cities with people who can't see stop light colors. These "people" went through the lights without even looking to the sides. Gar |

After my Safeway got remodeled, they don't carry Vernors anymore : ( . I don't drink too much pop now because it seems too sweet to me, but I'll drink a Vernor's any day. My boyfriend used to play at a bar across from the Vernors factory on Woodward. I think it was called Union Street. They also had a bar in one of the Pointes where he used to play, too. Another thing now missed is Faygobrau. Faygo was pop for sale in Michigan when I was growing up. This pop had a nice high head and was very tasty. I don't wanna hear about dirty comments about that. rharps.com |

I was crushed when we finally got there (after getting quite lost) and saw the sign that said "Closed for staff picnic." I've been thinking a lot about finding a good corned beef sandwich in Winnipeg, but it's a tough assignment. There's just doesn't seem to be a good deli here (lots of delis, but no really good one). Maybe I should fly to Montreal and get a Montreal Smoked Meat, instead...that'll satisfy me! rona -- ***For e-mail, replace .com with .ca Sorry for the inconvenience!*** |

Personally, I'm a great partisan of Blenheim #3 Hot ginger ale. A bottle of that'll get your attention sure enough. What I found to be bizarre was going to a town outside of Detroit, picking up soda for Thanksgiving, get some of this that, whatever, okay, how about ginger ale. Looking, looking, looking, no ginger ale. Excuse me, where can I find the ginger ale? Confused looks all around. You know, Canada Dry? More blank looks. Schwepp's? Blew my mind that such a common soda wouldn't be sold everywhere. nancy (wonder what they think of that country song I'm gonna drink Canada dry) |
