Kalua Pig a Success!

I made the Kalua Pig for dinner tonight - took Louis Cohen's suggestion
and served it with sweet potato oven fries, dusted with an Asian spice
mix, and a cucumber/red onion salad dressed simply with celery seeds, sea
salt and vinegar.

Everybody loved it and had seconds and thirds.

Homemade nectarine sorbet with macerated blackberries & raspberries for
dessert.

Definitely a winner - I'll make it again.

This will be my last mid-week dinner party for awhile. After a 3 1/2
year break, I'm returning to the realm of the employed on Monday.

It sounds like you had a wonderful dinner! Yum.

I always love Kalua pig. It has a wonderful flavor and you can
understand why Hawaiians would go through all the trouble of digging
an oven in the earth, line it with rocks, put in a dressed pig wrapped
in Ti leaves, then cover with more rocks and soil and wait patiently.
6 hours or so.

When we do an Imu(ground oven) we put in turkeys and sweet potatoes.
I have even heard of boy scout groups putting in briskets as for a
fund raiser. The turkey, I can tell you, is just as yummy imho as
Kalua pig.

Good luck returning to work!

Since you didn't post any recipes or anything why should we give a dam?
Hopefully diarrhea strikes you and your guests ASAP and for quite some time.

Google is your (well maybe not *yours*, since you probably have none, with your
attitude), but there *was* a thread with a discussion of this dinner, and links
provided, along with suggestions for side dishes.

Thanks, Bob. I thought about responding to this cretin, then decided he
wasn't worth my energy. A quick google search turned up nothing else of
value he's ever added here; he now has the distinction of being the first
and only addition to my bozo bin (an appropriate name if I ever did hear
one!)

Ohhh! That sounds delicious! Good luck with your dinner.

I agree a limon sorbet would have been more in keeping with the theme of
the meal. However, I had an excess of nectarines that I needed to use
up, and so nectarine sorbet was my choice. I added some lime zest and
juice to the sorbet, and used honey instead of sugar, having recently
discovered what a wonderful flavor combination it is with peaches and
nectarines.

Let us know how your dinner turns out!

I disagree. Since Kalua pig is a hawaiian tradition, a coconut flavored
pudding called Haupia would have been the perfect dessert.

I thought about a coconut dessert for a nanosecond. Unfortunately one of
my dinner guests that night absolutely *hates* coconut so that wasn't an
option for me. I might do that in the future, assuming I'm not up to my
elbows in nectarines again!
