Oops! Forgot to mention a couple other people who wanted to attend but
were unable to do so.

PAM (guppy): She made several dozen elk tamales in preparation for the
cook-in, then she found out that she'd have to work that day. :-(
However, her outstanding homemade mustard was enjoyed by all.

BRIAN MACKE: He was going to make Danish pastry and Chicago style, spinach
stuffed pizza.

I also forgot to mention that both our central air conditioner and our
refrigerator died. Thank goodness we had brought the refrigerator from our
old house along with us when we moved. We had to haul everything from the
kitchen fridge down to the basement. Many thanks to Hag and Stenni for
purchasing five fans "for their personal comfort," and leaving them here
because they couldn't haul them back to Okinawa with them. :-)

That's about it for now.

Thanks, Terry. I'm feeling a bit disenfranchised from the low-carb group
right now because of eating, let's say, a wider variety of food this
weekend than I have been. I'm reading both groups, but at this point, only
posting to RFC.

It's good to know that people remember me, much less miss me. It's a good
feeling.

Hugs,
Carol

Welcome back.

By the way -- you _did_ get told that you were in charge of the cook-in,
didn't you? The one which begins 6 am this Saturday?

Default Hag's Cook-In

Well, Damsel's been hassling me about posting details, so here
goes...

Erik and I didn't get there until late Friday afternoon, because we'd
stopped for a few days in the Chicago area. Friday night dinner was
hors d'oeuvres night, with several types of fondue, sushi, some great
homemade dips for vegetables and crackers, swedish meatballs, garlicky
olives and other goodies. People had a great time relaxing and
chatting while we hung around Damsel and Crash's kitchen. I hear
that later that night (after 2 am) things got kind of...wild. Let's
just say that more than just reputations were soiled. I can say no
more. Nope. Not even if you send me $20 via PayPal.

On Saturday, everyone who was able to stagger upright met again in the
kitchen for breakfast/snack type foods, including Mike B.'s fabulous
homemade sausage--bratwurst and creole, with Pam's incredible homemade
mustard, some tasty cheeses (Red Leicester, sharp cheddar, havarti
with dill and havarti with garlic and herbs), and a chocolate omelet for
Lynne.

Meals kind of blend into one another at Midwestern cook-ins, so after
a brief and unsuccessful flirtation with visiting the Spam Museum (a
looooong story) we got down to business. I made potstickers with
dipping sauces whipped up by the talented Hag, Erik grilled his
Ginger-Soy London Broil from Steven Raichlen's _How to Grill_. I'll
be damned, but I can't remember which things we had on Saturday and
Sunday. It did involve some delicious grilled chicken by Hag and Co.,
grilled cabbage and garlic pepper potatoes, eel, more potstickers,
bulgogi (marinated top round, grilled and sliced thin), and some of
the best smoked salmon I've ever tasted, courtesy of Crash!

No doubt I'm forgetting stuff, but that's what happens when you have a
weekend food orgy with these people. Damsel and Crash were so brave
to let us into their new (and lovely) home, and since I'm fairly sure
it's still standing, maybe they won't regret their decision. It
was really fun seeing everyone again, and we're sorry to have missed
the people who couldn't make it--hopefully another time!

Ah. That confirms some of my musing. I think you usually
(always?) need a gap between those LC things and the higher-carb
versions. Did you make a cheesecake?

A cheesecake (in a 9x13 pan) with a pecan crust. I hated the crust, and
will make future cheesecakes with a parchment paper "crust." I also made
all four kinds of my low-carb cookies. I may as well have been serving
D-Con. LOL!

It was so hot in my tiny kitchen! I'd never used a gas stove before we
moved here, and didn't realize that they heat every inch of the entire
house when they're on. Wish I could afford one that's gas on the stove
top, with an electric oven. Crash assures me that they exist, but that
they're far out of our financial reach.

Next year's cook-in will be to celebrate my 50th birthday. Jill and Pam
(guppy) have birthdays the same week, so we're having three, count 'em,
three birthday cakes. It's all figured out: Hershey's Perfectly Chocolate
Chocolate Cake, my mom's Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting, and my
grandmother's Spice Cake with penuche frosting. This will be very good for
my diabetes. ouch! I'm considering asking my doc for a small supply of
glyburide just for the weekend, so my sugars don't get dangerously high.
But dammit! You only turn 50 once!

I heartily agree. :-)

BTW, I've just proven the "sudden weight gain is water" theory. I've lost
5.5 pounds since yesterday morning, when I stopped eating high-carb foods.

Does your space bsolutely dictate an "all in one" design?
Have you considered a separate oven & cooktop?

I've only recently heard of them, but haven't seen one yet.

I have a teeny-tiny kitchen. Tons of cabinet space, but a previous owner
actually cut a hole in the wall and inserted the refrigerator to make the
walkway wider. It's very difficult for two people to pass, and when you
open the oven door, you have to stand to the side, because the door comes
within inches of the cabinets on the other side.

Besides, this is a brand new stove/oven, and we're going to have to use it
until it dies. Well, it works out nicely in the winter, when I make pot
roasts a turkeys and such.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. It would be a perfect solution. That's
the way my mom's kitchen was, and I loved it. Her oven was built at
standing level, and was built right into the wall. She had an electric
stove, but at least they were separate units.

I got one a couple weeks back. It's a GE Profile and it's smarter
than I am. Heluva stove. Very nice gas burners on top and an electric
convection oven below. The oven has digital controls so you can set
it to any baking temperature. It beeps when the temp is reached.

One odd thing is that it has seperate buttons for convection baking
and convection roasting. I've read the manual and it seems the two
terms refer to making breads and cakes (baking) and cooking meats
(roasting). However, I can't find what the difference is in terms of
the oven's behavior.

Dams (Hey, lady!) is right about price. Mine came in at $1500 before
the rebate. I've never bought an appliance that cost that much.
Hell, it was years before I had a CAR that cost that much.
