I am going to try to make it. I have to put in my schedule requests
tomorrow, so will try for one of the dates. What is the consensus on
the dates for the planning dinner.

Also, if anyone wants to meet for dinner before then, I would be
interested.

Christine, who is about to check out one of the farmers markets here.

I may be able to make it, depending on when. I usually am in the
valley @ least once per fall/winter. In fact, I missed the Sandy Eggo
cook-in because I was in the valley w/sick parent. I'll be watching
for dates.

I didn't say that, Allen. Charlie said that, I think. Check your

I have no conflicts on any particular night. But I also
can't commit a month ahead, so whatever is good for the
most constrained among us is fine by me.

Thinking about it, the Baby Kay's on 20th between Camelback
and Highland sounds about right, if we're not too numerous.

Pappadeaux is good, but kind of corporate, being a national chain.

Baby Kay's is local and if the Camelback location is half as funky
as the Scottsdale one, we'll enjoy ourselves.

But if we get more than 8 or so, and it's as small as you
say it is, there might not be comfortable room for us.

Friday the 27th works best for me. Readah and Blair are open to either.
It would be great if you could come!

I wouldn't mind doing that but my schedule is unpredictable right now.
I'll certainly keep it in mind.

My guess is they are about the same.

I e-mailed readah with menus from both restaurants since she probably
won't be posting until after her business trip.

At present I don't think we'll exceed 8 for the dinner, as right now we
are 4 if Christine comes. Actually, make it 5 if my SO comes. I hope we
can generate a good group for the cook-in.

Okay, I will ask for that night off. I work from 7pm to 7am, so I
have to take a night off to be able to go out like that.

I tried to find the Thursday farmers market that I saw listed at the
USDA website for farmers markets. I saw one lonely vendor there (I
think), as I was trying to figure out where it was held. Is this
typical of farmers markets in this area?

Mind you, I am coming from a farmers market paradise (California) so
maybe I am expecting too much.

I will try to see if one of the Saturday farmers markets are any
better. Anyone got any suggestions in the way of which farmers
markets are good? Is it worth trying to find one of the Saturday
farmers markets?

Or do I have to quell my longing for a good summer tomato or really
fresh produce until I manage to get back to CA?

I have to honestly say that I've never been to one, as my schedule always
seems to conflict.

There is supposed to be one on Wednesdays from 10am to 2pm at the Town
and Country Shopping Center at Camelback & N. 20th Street (in the parking
lot on 20th). I haven't been to that one either, but have talked to
people who have and like it. This one is supposed to be year-round.
This, BTW, is the same parking lot where Baby Kay's Caju Kitchen is
located.

Many of the farmer's markets here don't run through the hottest summer
months.

Yep, I am here until October 23 at least. Depending on how much I like
it, and if I am tired of moving about, I might stay longer. Time will
tell.

Well, I am going to try to find the ones tomorrow, and hope there is
something good there. I will let you know.

Is there anywhere in town, other than someone's garden, where I could
find really good ripe tomatoes? That you know of, that is? Anyone
in Phoenix know where I can find this?

Unfortunately, I don't know all of Phoenix...wish I did! There are two
places in the east valley, one in Mesa at 4755 E. Main St. in Mesa, and
one at 10715 East Apache Trail in Apache Junction, both called
Superstition Ranch Market. I have bought very good tomatoes and produce
there, but there isn't always consistency there. I'd hate to have you
make the trip and it be a bad day.
