What would you serve to drink at a make-your-own-sundae party (for adults,
not children)? I'll have a couple light appetizers as well (dip & veggies, marinated mushrooms, olive paste & crostini, nothing too fancy) which would call for wine but I really can't imagine drinking wine with ice cream. Anyone have any bright ideas? Thanks! LauraJ |

How about a 'make-your-own cocktail' table where people can create drinks to go with their sundaes? You needen't provide a huge selection of ingredients, just a couple of liquers (something coffee flavoured, something chocolate, something strawberry-flavoured?), plenty of crushed ice, cream, egg whites etc. and appropriate mixers - plus a couple of cocktail recipes for the uninspired. Might be a lot of work for you on top of the sundaes, but it's a thought. I don't like champagne ![]() Jo --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Anyone have any bright ideas? Why would you think wine can't be enjoyed with desserts? There are hundreds of wines, fortified spirits, and liqueurs that can be served with dessert -- specifically ice cream. Ports go well with many chocolates; late harvests (zin, berry-infused, et al) enhance an already-sweet dessert; champagnes and sparkling wines sharpen the taste buds through their effervescence. Then there's always the dessert apértifs (Frangelico, Bailey's, Amaretto, etc.) Personally, I'd serve a vertical of ports (my favorite is Quinta do Noval), Bailey's, Frangelico, Krug Champagne, Far Niente Dolce, and coffee and tea. Also make sure you have different chocolate toppings available -- not everyone appreciates Hershey's Squirt-n-Glop. <G> The Ranger --- Humor is genetic. The word liqueur comes from the Latin liquifacere ("to dissolve") and refers to the dissolving of flavorings in the spirits. I never could understand how anyone can drink sweetened beverages with a dessert like pie, cake, or ice cream, or even pancakes for breakfast. I don't think wine would go at all and certainly not beer - yuck! However you could have different drinks to go with the appetizers, then switch to ice water or tea with the ice cream. Thanks everyone, for your wonderful ideas! Though some of you give my
friends far too much credit on the "sophistication" scale. Well, they'll drink whatever you put down in front of them but would be just as happy with a beer as with port, cordials, champagne, etc. Though it'd have to be a good beer, of course. I don't know why I didn't think of coffee--duh. We've got a great local roaster (they hand-deliver your coffee beans hours after they're roasted) so I'll make up some hot and iced coffee and provide some Bailey's and such for those who want an extra kick (though I myself would be more likely to put that stuff on ice cream than in coffee). Thanks again!
