It's say more like a thick, spicy, very meaty spaghetti-like sauce.
We do them open faced and with grated chedder cheese on top.

It's one of those meals that are quick and easy, not cuisine by
anybody's standards unless you are 5 years old.

Not the same thing. IMO, the sloppy joe mix is predominantly meat --
the sauce is there as a bit of a binder. I think of spaghetti sauce and
mostly liquid -- with some meat bits here and there. If, however, I
had, say, a cup of spaghetti sauce leftover, I might (but not likely --
my seasonings are different for the two dishes) brown up a pound or two
or ground beef and stir the sauce into it; then I think the consistency
would be about right for sloppy joes.

Actually "Sloppy Joe" is primarily a presentation style... what one presents
can be if one has the ability quite complex. I often enjoy my favorite home
made chili a la Sloppy Joe... and my chili is still waiting to be beaten.
Nathans Famous on Surf Avenue makes the best Sloppy Joe with chow mein and with
bbq.... oh boy, do I wish, right now... why do I tease myself like this.

No, the typical spaghetti sauce has too little meat. A sloppy Joe is
mostly meat with sauce to wet everything down well. If you're pouring
anything, then you've got (as Bobby Hill said), "All sloppy and no Joe."

When eating SJ-like things, I sometimes use a single piece of bread, but
then it's a foldover, not open-faced.

1/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
3/4 cup ketchup
3 teaspoons brown sugar
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste

Brown and drain ground beef. Add remaining ingredients to cooked ground beef.

Agreed. A tasty variation is Chili Joes, add some canned chili to ground
beef and other stuff.

Add to a pound of cooked al dente elbow macaroni and you have American Chop
Suey.

NOTE: More meat than sauce, as others have mentioned. And it should be a
rather spicy meat sauce, although I take issue with those who posted "BBQ
sauce". Save that for pulled pork sandwiches

Care to describe your chop suey... maybe you never even saw "American Chop

Sorry Sheldon, but as a kid I *hated* American Chop Suey (macaroni with
sauce..beef, maters, onions, green peppers, celery), but always loved Sloppy
Joes.
Guess which was served more often???
As an adult, however, I'd touch neither.

Stace (but Mom never could cook, so that might explain a lot)

I've read a whole lot of opinions on this, but this is how I make sloppy
joes.

Brown meat. Mix with Manwich sauce
(http://www.rockville.de/Shop/sloppy.jpg), place mixture on bottom of
hamburger bun, put top of bun on, put a little more meat sauce on top, eat
with fork and knife (i know, i know, that's wrong accoring to most ppl, but
that's how I do it)...

Definetely does not take a lot of kitchen skills, but it's a comfort food
for me.... gotta have it every once in a while...

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Carrie

Done well, American Chop Suey is one of the sublime comfort foods...I'll
even gladly serve it to company on a cold winter's night...with a green
salad and some garlic bread it's always a big hit.

I take it they don't sell Manwich where you live. It is a canned sloppy joe
mix they sell in the US; you add it to a pound of browned, crumbled, drained
ground beef. Serve it on hamburger buns; I like a slice of cheddar cheese on
them. Too messy to eat with my hands, a knife and fork work much better.

Well, that would kill it for me, too, but I love both meatloaf and
sloppy joes. Since reading this thread, I developed a craving for
sloppy joes and made them for dinner tonight. Delish!

Actually, with much more meat, at least my version. It's meat held
together with sauce, not meat-flavored sauce.
