Default Sloppy Joe "Bunwiches"

This flies in the face of what I said earlier about not using BBQ sauce for
sloppy joes, but it came from an old Good Housekeeping Cookbook so I'll post
it that way. Only one note (my own) - I'd use chili sauce instead. I have
*not* tried these. Sounds like something kids might like.

1 lb. ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
2/3 c. bottled BBQ sauce
1/4 c. chopped parsley
1 Tbs. soy sauce
2 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/8 tsp. black pepper
Two 8-oz rolls refrigerator biscuits
1 egg, beaten

Brown beef and onion; drain off fat. Stir in remaining ingredients except
biscuits. Heat the oven to 425F. On a floured board, place two biscuits on
top of each other and roll out to a 5 inch circle. Place about 2 Tbs. meat
mixture in the center. Gather the circle together and pinch the edges to
form a sealed pouch. Place each, sealed side up, on a foil wrapped baking
sheet about 2 inches apart. Brush with beaten egg. Bake for 10-15 minutes
or until lightly browned. Makes 10 "bunwiches".

Default Sloppy Joe "Bunwiches"

Classic Sloppy Joes

Prep/Cook time: 10 minutes/15 minutes
Serves: 8

Ingredients:
1 tbsp (15 mL) vegetable oil
1 small onion, chopped
1/3 cup (75 mL) chopped green pepper
1 lb (500 g) lean ground beef
1 1/2 cup (375 mL) Heinz Tomato Ketchup
1 tbsp (15 mL) Heinz Worchestershire Sauce
2 tbsp (30 mL) brown sugar
1/4 tsp (1 mL) each salt and pepper
8 sandwich buns

Preparation:

HEAT oil in a large frying pan set over medium-high heat. Sauté onions and
green pepper for 5 minutes.

ADD beef to the pan. Cook, stirring until browned, about 5 to 10 minutes.
Drain off fat.

STIR in chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, salt and pepper. Simmer
over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until
slightly thickened. Serve on sandwich buns. Makes 8 servings.

Twist 1:
For burger-appeal, jazz-up Sloppy Joes with additional toppings such as
shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, grated cheese, sour cream or ranch
dressing.
Twist 2:
For a meat variation, use lean ground chicken or pork instead of beef.
Twist 3:
For a Veggie-boosted Joe, stir in 1 cup (250 mL) each shredded carrot and
chopped mushrooms.
Twist 4:
For a high fibre alternative, try whole wheat pitas or rolls instead of
sandwich buns.
Twist 5:
For a chunkier Joe, use Heinz Chili Sauce, Chunky with Sweet Peppers
instead of ketchup.
Twist 6:
For a smokey-flavoured Joe, use one of the Heinz Western Grill BBQ Sauces
instead of ketchup.
