![]() ....or does anyone else think that groceries have gotten more expensive in the last year or so? Beef, chicken, and dairy products have for various reasons spiked up in price, but most everything seems to have gone up at least a little.... The only real exception I've noticed is orange juice - there has been a bumper crop of oranges and because of the Atikins mania fewer are drinking it, so OJ is a relative bargain these days.... I hew to a fairly strict grocery budget, use coupons, cook a lot from scratch, and tend to buy stuff only when it's on sale...I'm not the type to get a hundred bucks from the ATM and go grocery shopping just because it's a fun thing to do. I always make a list and stick to it. Anyone else notice this or is it just me? -- Best Greg |

Not only have prices gone up but what you get per package has gone down. The quality of meats, fruits and veggies have also gone down, at least in my area. I would say that our food budget has gone up 10% in the last year for the exact same foods from the year before. ~Kat "help is on the way" ~John Kerry |

I've noticed price jumps for meats, fish and almost all dairy products especially those higher in butterfat content. But those items can represent the biggest chunk of the grocery bill. Fresh produce doesn't seem to have changed much. Eggs prices have dropped from their ultra high levels of a year ago. |

Yeah, eggs were *really* high in the past year. Last week my local soopermarket had them for 79 cents per dozen, which is the best price I've seen in a while. I've noticed that run - of - the - mill cheese is hardly ever on sale much, they used to run good sales at least every month or so but I haven't seen a good cheese sale in quite a while...milk has come down from it's lofty price, I can usually find it for $2.49 per gallon somewhere. Butter was $2.50 per pound last week, which is cheaper than it has been. There have been some pretty good sales on ice cream, but hey, 'tis the season.... And yeah, produce hasn't seemed to be that much more expensive...here in Chicawgo I can hop a bus and go up to Argyle St. (a mostly Vietnamese area) and get vegetables good and cheap. Same with Mexican, but they tore down my great local supermercado and put up a bunch of yuppiescum condos in it's place :-( The City of Chicago website used to have a weekly price comparison of a "basket" of common grocery items but the last one was posted in 2002 (such are things in "The City That Works). Does anyone know of a similar site? -- Best Greg |

Actually, you're wrong. My experience with Islamic followers, as well as what knowledge I do have of Islam, is that they cherish life. But they will not accept to live under any sort of abject circumstances and spiralling poverty. Would you accept it if armed Muslims told you you had to live like they do now in the Gaza strip? Be honest here. How would you react? Again, be honest. The debate on both sides has degenerated to the point where it is intensely vitriolic. There is an old Persian saying that says if two people argue, they are both wrong. As a long-time observer of this deteriorating situation, I think that judgment applies. -- Please note that this post contains no overt anti-USAian statements of any sort, nor is it designed to excite the political passions of the morally bankrupt right-wing supporters of the emerging fascist states...unfortunately :-) |

Would you accept it if armed > Muslims told you you had to live like they do now in the Gaza strip? The living conditions in the Gaza Strip are a result of the neglect of the surrounding Arab states to provide a home for them.. As such they are cruelly used as a political pawn by the likes of Saudi Arabia, etc. If Islam supposedly teaches charity and brotherhood towards your fellow believers why is there even a Gaza Strip? The squalid lives these people live is a consequence of Arab indifference. Heck, the Kuwaitis even kicked out all the "Palestinians" in their country after the end of the '91 war. You'd think what with all that oil dough the Kuwaiti's could have at least given them a nice "severance package".... > Be honest here. How would you react? The living conditions in the Gaza Strip are a result of the neglect of the surrounding Arab states to provide a home for them.. As such they are cruelly used as a political pawn by the likes of Saudi Arabia, etc. If Islam supposedly teaches charity and brotherhood towards your fellow believers why is there even a Gaza Strip? The squalid lives these people live is a consequence of Arab indifference. Heck, the Kuwaitis even kicked out all the "Palestinians" in their country after the end of the '91 war. Sure, I've noticed it. Sometimes in the form of outright price increases, sometimes in the form of fewer ounces for the same price as the former more-ounces packaging. Graham crackers. Shel' honey, there are other sources of oil other than what the Arabs are supplying. We have plenty of our own reserves, and Mexico and Russia are also suppliers and I think Russia is part of OPEC. African oil sources are being opened up shortly. And there is plenty of oil in Alaska. With proper management, oil wells do not have to damage the wildlife. Part of the blame has to fall on our greedy-assed oil barons here in the US. If they would not buy arabian oil, (boycott it if it gets over a certain price), they would be forced to bring the prices back down. We do NOT have to buy Moslem oil! Prices have gone up way more than 'a little'. I've been ranting about it for over two years now and it's gone into overdrive in the last year. Naturally, out here in CA, where all prices are beyond insane, it will seem even more extreme, but reletively the prices have still jumped at least 25-50% in the last year. Some examples of current prices: butter $5+ lb bacon $6+ lb eggs $3-4 doz bread $3.50+ loaf Amrcn cheese $5 per 16 cnt cereal $4-5 box Fish is now 'off the hook!'. Talapia fillets, which were considered trash fish just 2 yrs ago and went for $ 4 lb, now go for $6-8 lb. The one saving grace is, all this stuff eventually goes on sale. Seriously, I don''t buy anything that is not AT LEAST 50% OFF!! And, it all goes on sale eventully. The key is, save your money, do without, wait for that sale, and buy a shit load!! Well, buy a bunch. ![]() just went on sale for $.99lb. Guess what I'm gonna do ![]() nb |

I need to go into the mail order grocery business! :-o I can still get eggs for 79 to 99 cents per dozen! Butter runs about $3.00 per lb. (and that is considered high), bread is 79 cents per loaf for the generic whole wheat, American cheese (in fact most cheese) is still around $3.50 per lb. Cereal and bacon, I have no idea as I dont generally buy it, but I can get "bacon ends and pieces" in a 3 lb. box for bean flavoring for under $2.00 per lb... I can still get chicken hindquarters for 79 cents per lb. nearly all the time, and catfish nuggets for under $1.50 per lb. I hate tilapia. :-P K. > > Fish is now 'off the hook!'.
